the most inspirational book on my shelves
I've collected hundreds of books - from philosophy to mysteries to cookbooks. And, I'm a philosophy teacher who reads (lots of) fiction for pleasure. But if I were to save only one book for eternity, it would be this one. The recipes are presented clearly and are simple to prepare. But the book is more than the recipes. It is also a collection of inspiring stories from around the world. For those of us in the US, with luxuries and overabundance the norm, it is a humbling look at how the rest of the world struggles with the simplest needs. I have no particular religious affiliation but this is the book I turn to (at least once a year) for a spiritual overhaul and reality check. I can't recommend it enough.

Best cookbook I've ever owned!
I've had this cookbook for ten years. It's been dragged all over the world with me and I think I've actually tried over 60% of the recipes. Every meal has been delicious; beating-out "gourmet" recipes that take twice as much time to prepare. It's a wonderful way to get to know the cuisine of the real people of other cultures, too. I wish they were all written like this!

Buy this cookbook now!
This is positively the best cookbook I own! I bought it while living in Belize, where specialty ingredients are scarce, and I was cooking all the time. Every single recipe I have made from this book (and I've made a few!) turned out perfect and amazingly tasty the very first time. The authors and testers have clearly done their work well. This book is worth buying for the (very-simple-to-prepare) Korean spinach salad recipe alone. People who *hate* spinach will love it! Hope you enjoy this cookbook as much as I have.

Straight from the men whom face the flames
On could say that this book is like hearing something straight from the horses mouth and that is definetly true for this book in question, i.e.,The Fire Inside: Firefighters Talk About Their Lives by Steve Delsohn. In this wonderful book we are given an opportunity to hear the stories straight from these brave sould whom put their lives on the line veryday to make life easier and safer for the rest of us. Highly Recommended.

Tells It Just Like It Is.
This book is an uncensored snapshot of primarily paid firefighters and their jobs. The book is best for more mature audiences as the material discussed is sometime quite graphic and disturbing. Of course, this is a real strength of the book as readers disturbed by the contents are only then able to begin to understand the emotional stress of being a firefighter. The book has its 'high' points as well as firefighters recall the many successful and rewarding endeavors they face daily. As a business professional AND volunteer firefighter, I found this book to be the proverbial 'pat on the back' that we firefighters occasionally need. I do wish the book had more snip-its from volunteer firefighters.

Excellent
One of the best books about firefighting by firefighters. Reading the stories of theses heros really brings their job into perspective.

Perfect
Exciting, inspiring, motivating, encouraging, helpful, informative, clear, comprehensible, easy to read. Excellent book!!! Knowledge, experience, and passion towards discussed topics just shines through every page. Written in a easy to understand language, the book is a perfect aid to not only beginning exporters/importers, but also experienced ones. Lexicon doesn't belittle reader's mental abilities by chewing on every elementary detail; at the same time it doesn't bombard anybody by heavy concepts and trade jargon. Author uses great approach to delivering information - logical, clear and ordered.

The best ¿How-To¿ book I¿ve found on international sales
Mr. Foley takes it right from the start - from solid information on whether to even consider making international sales, all the way through to direct foreign investment. Along the way he provides detailed examples, reference materials, and a number of excellent resources that take the mystery out of international sales.

Perhaps most importantly, this is not a regurgitation of MBA material on the subject - Mr. Foley has directly relevant experience, having spearheaded international expansions earlier in his career and now advising companies on how to achieve their global potential.

This is an excellent reference that our company continues to use as we expand to new markets globally and work to increase our share in markets we're already addressing.

Excellent
This is an excellent source for everything from foreign market evaluation to the documentation for your first sale. Well written and enjoyable to read. While startng out in the game of global enterprise, I have a lot of questions. The questions are being answered, plus all the ones I didn't know I needed to ask. The book excites me to pursue the markets. Before hand I thought it would frighten or discourage me, reading about all the work and risk involved. It was encouraging to hear that international business is where to see the world and its cultures, not just a way to increase profits. I plan to use this book as the guide when our company goes global.

Five years old, but still very very topical !
The complex domain of US - Cuban relations is changing every day, with new developments on both sides in terms of policy, which in turn affect the Cuban economy, society in Cuba, perspectives for future change, etc. Nevertheless, this book already back in 1997, managed to set an excellent framework on the theme of US - Cuban relations on the long term. Contrary to what one might expect, the fact that five years have now elapsed, has not made this book outdated. On the contrary, we can see indeed that some of the author's predictions became reality. Altogether, even today this remains a great book as a starting point to approach and study this fascinating and ever-changing topic. For sure, a new edition could add some interesting information to this study. Yet, for the purposes it sets itself, this book is still very very up-to-date and topical, and will likely remain so even after Castro is gone. While being an academic book in the field of political sciences and international relations more specifically, this is also a book about history, and as such will be invaluable for scholars of Cuban history at any time.

Informative, concise, accurate, and excellently written
In such a short book, with indeed only three chapters besides the introduction and conclusions, the author has managed to put together, in a concise and excellently presented way, the facts and data of which the reader must be made aware, the various possible interpretations of these facts, as well as the author's own interpretations and analysis. The book is an excellent review of existing material on the subject (a great amount of research and critique has obviously gone into it), as well as a wonderful analysis of this material, with the addition of original material from the Cuban media and interviews, and the author's own points of view, which are always presented against any possible counter-arguments. All in all, a great start for anyone who would like to explore the exciting subject of US
- Cuban relations.

An academic study, and a witty analysis of Cuban society
In this brief yet dense academic study, the author manages not only to expose data and propose his views on the issue, but also to capture the reader's analysis in a way that few very academic books can. While it tells of the intricate relation between the US embargo against Cuba and what happens in the island, the book also tells a lot on the repression of Castro's regime over. With crystal clarity and even some razor-sharp sarcasm, the author manages to identify some crucial features which make Cuban society unique, which can in fact be traced back to the horrible effects of US policy on the Cuban people, ensued by Castro's manipulation of this. All in all, Cuban policy can often be regarded as a big farce. While we condemn Castro's dictatorship or / and the US embargo, and in either case we share the suffering of the Cuban people, this book helps us see all this in a thrilling new light, filled with some witty humour and a good deal of sarcasm, making the book wonderful reading altogether.

This publication is a succinct but authoritative primer on this organization's role as a potential policy-making alternative body for managing global financial challenges.

This book goes a some way to lifting the curtain on the secrecy that surrounds the operation of a body that has no charter, no headquarters, no secretariat. --Business Worldaware

Well-written account of the atrocities in Bosnia
I couldn't put this book down. Every page, every line tells the truth behind the Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian conflict. All wars are complex and difficult to comprehend but Mr. Cohen helps us understand what happened just a few years ago. An accurate and eye-opening account. Some of the atrocities committed are so heinous, so vile as to bring us right back to images of the Third Reich. This is a very important work by a man who knows what he is talking about.

If you live an enire life and only read one book
this is the book to read. Its absolutely fantastic. Roger Cohen has a very sharp pen. For me its not just enough to read the book myself, I want to buy other copies and give to friends.

THE definative account of the Bosnian war
The destruction of Yugoslavia is not the easiest of subjects to fully comprehend. Cohen's informative and excellently written narrative is the best place to start. Cohen does more than just describe the events, he attempts to get beneath the surface to understand the psychology behind the unspeakable atrocities committed during the various wars. The trajedy of Yugoslavia cannot be understood without a recounting of the atrocities committed there during World War II, atrocities that largely went unpunished. All of this and more are recounted by Cohen in his very readable account. It is must reading for anyone interested in recent European history.

The Jewish State: The Struggle for Israel's Soul

Strong writing, weak thesis
Mr. Hazony is a great writer. As a concise history of Zionism, this book is fantastic reading. However his thesis is unconvincing. Every time Hazony quotes Martin Buber to expose his hostility towards Jewish Statehood, Buber's words ring with near-prophetic wisdom and intelligence--the opposite of Hazony's intention, one would imagine.

Hazony's paints the struggle between the early Jewish Zionists and Jewish anti-Zionists to be in large part a petty war of egos. It takes 5 chapters before Hazony goes into the anti-Zionists feelings about the Arabs of Palestine in any depth. The Anti-Zionists central argument--that changing the demographics of Ottoman Palestine against the wishes of the Arab population is inherently immoral--becomes a footnote to Hazony's story. Needless to say, it's this factor which has poisoned relations between the peoples of the Middle East to this day.

Hazony's main thesis is that the Jewish anti-Zionist legacy never died, but remained vibrant, protected within the ivory tower of Jerusalem's Hebrew University, influencing politics insidiously by poisoning Israel's cultural life. Poisoning or influencing for the better? --you decide. Hazony provides the history.

My own belief is that 3 generations of war, countless deaths, and an immoral occupation of the West Bank and Gaza are sufficient factors to have created an Israeli ideology of Post-Zionism. You don't need a conspiracy theory about Hebrew University brainwashing everybody to account for that.

Terrific, But...
First of all, I must say that this is a terrific book. It is amazing in the way it shows how and why Israel will unfortunately not exist in the near future.

However, it does have a few problems, one of which I feel is cardinal. The first few chapters, in which Hazony presents his thesis, regarding the level of infiltration of "post-zionism" into modern Israeli society, namely its mainstream left (whether they admit it or not), are not intended for anyone who is not on the same side, politically, as Hazony himself. And therefore will not understand, what exactly Hazony's opinion on the matter, and why he sees this as "wrong" (if they will come to that conclusion).

Another minor problem is the way is idolizes Labor Zionism, particularly Herzl and Ben-Gurion. The way he presents them is a bit biased.

Overall this book is amazing, and a must to read for everyone who wants to really know more about Israel, and maybe to try and to something, if it's not too late.

Best answer to Post-Zionism
The book is a must-read for any one who see himself as a true zionist. It describes the way anti- and post- zionism has evolved in the last 100 years - partly from zionism itself. It combines almost up-to-date description of frightening post-zionism in the Israeli society, with a very interesting view of the history of Zionism. Apart from the very important content - the book is also written very well.

Good for Special Occasions
This book is comprehensive. It covers so much that I still have not been able to get through a quarter of the recipes even though I've owned this book for about 3 years! The recipes found in this book are enticing because not only are the photographs beautiful but the quirky combination of ingredients is hard to imagine. The few recipes I've tried have been really good but I have one major problem with this book. The ingredients used are not items that you can find in any supermarket. One would have to go to a specialty gourmet store or asian market. So, in order to prepare a meal from this book, you have to go out and buy a whole bunch of ingredients (and believe me the ingredient lists are long!). This is a handy book if you want to prepare something different for guests or for your family on a special occasion but not worth all of the time, money, and effort you would have to put in for an everyday meal.

this is one of the best
i did not do 1/10th of the recipes here but i can tell you one thing...my cooking changed dramatically for a while.
i loved the small touches, the photography, the willingness to push the readers a bit further.
a must for wanna-be chefs who want to try out something new.

Fusion Food Cookbook
Every recipe that we have tried in the book has been outstanding. The recommended combinations are excellent and always compliment each other very well. It is really easy to prepare a fantastic gourmet meal for dinner parties. This is one of the very best cookbooks we have every owned and we recommend it to all of our friends.

Facsimile edition of a classic!
Thanks to some bright soul at UC Press, who probably had a Christmas list when the original went out of print, this best of all cookbooks for the area is again available. If you read through the reviews you'll see some confusion -- one reader wants mushroom Khimkali, another says she's wrong that there's no recipe-- Khimkali are dumplings and the recipe in the book is for (delicious!) meat, not mushroom, dumplings. It's also uncertain if Basturma, the marinated grilled meat recipes given, is the same as the un-marinated Mtsvadi two Georgian readers yearn for. If your mouth isn't watering yet, consider Fish with Pomegranate and Walnut sauce, succulent chicken sauteed in butter under a weight (one of the most useful techniques ever for game birds or less than tender backyard chickens), green beans cooked over a lamb stew and pureed into it (a pearl beyond price for the gardener confronted with tough beans or the cook who finds only tasteless frozen beans at hand), stellar sweets --easy and exotic with many featuring fruits, --I've found something delicious and something easy in every chapter. For real enthusiasts and the congenitally curious there's much material about the way of life then and now in Georgia. Some unusual herbs are described accurately enough so that you can research them; common herbs are used by cupfuls and handfuls as in --Ms. Goldstein says-- the true Georgian cuisine, and, also as she says, have a completely different effect --another inspiration for exploration among the many you'll find in this book.

This would make a great gift book, for those who already own it, or what the heck, get copies for yourself and your Christmas list!

More than just a cookbook
In my opinion, there are some critical recipes missing -- mushroom khinkhali, for example. Nonetheless, this is the most comprehensive and best Georgian cookbook I've come across. The cultural information is a delight to read, and the author's recipes for the Georgian spice blends are key to replicating Georgian cuisine.

A wonderful find
This book is precious just by the fact that it exists! The recipes work amazingly well, directions are clear and easy. The sections on culture and customs are extremely helpful in understanding the roots and reasons behind the preparations and techniques. Highly recommended to anyone who knows and loves Georgian food or those trying to expand their culinary horizons.
