Jaguar realities in the U.S.
This timely and useful book collates and summarizes in handy paperback form what is known about the northernmost population of the jaguar in the U.S. Southwest and adjoining parts of Mexico. I couldn't put the book down and recommend it highly as an authentic learning experience about the jaguar in southwest history, ecology, and culture. The authors are to be commended for undertaking such a thorough attempt to gather and assess all manner of pertinent information about this animal, past and present. In the recent era, jaguars have been in rare and marginal numbers in Arizona and New Mexico as northern outliers of a larger Mexican breeding population in northern Sonora. Currently, it doesn't look good for these nearest breeding populations--where the two lone jaguars photographed in 1996 in southeastern Arizona most likely came from. The size and structure of this nearest jaguar population (about 120 miles south of Arizona)is largely unknown scientifically and likely in serious decline now. According to the authors' survey results a continual number of animals in the population (including lactating females) are apparently still killed each year in response to livestock predation. Hopefully, improving research efforts like this will lead to a more informed public (here and in Mexico), to timely and more effective conservation measures, and a more certain future for these animals. Otherwise, we may learn all too soon that the presence of but another magnificent creature has quietly, permanently winked-out and will no longer enrich our common borderlands.

"Borderland Jaguars" by D. E. Brown & C. A. L. Gonzalez
With „Borderland Jaguars" David E. Brown and co-author Carlos A. Lopez Gonzalez have continued the investigative writing tradition Brown started back in 1983 with „The Wolf in the Southwest" followed by „The Grizzly in the Southwest" (1985).

While the previous books are considered classic references of the imbalanced struggle between man and predators in the past, the recent spectacular sightings of jaguars in the remote Baboquivari and Peloncillo mountains of Arizona have refueled the public's interest into the present status and future of „tigres" north of the Mexican border.

Brown and Gonzalez show that jaguar visits from the south are not accidental events but follow a complex pattern. One important issue in this respect is the biotic communities of the borderlands providing jaguar habitat, and which are thoroughly discussed. The natural history of the jaguar is highlighted by a carefully up-dated listing of jaguars reported from Arizona, New Mexico, Sonora and Chihuahua between 1900 and 2000, many supported by photographs and behind-the-scene information from eyewitnesses. Through on-site investigations in Mexico, Brown and Gonzalez were able to locate the possible source(s) of those jaguars that periodically show up in AZ.

The ancient symbolic power, as well as the elusive beauty of the jaguar, which trigger our imagination, are omnipresent throughout this book. And, the tension and personal reports of the few lucky Arizonans, who have actually come across jaguars, make this book extremely exciting reading. Putting the reader down in a comfortable armchair in pursuit of a jaguar in an abandoned minetunnel, with only four shells and a dim flashlight, is simply not offered by regular wildlife references!

By giving attention to the large predators of the Southwest, Brown has brought us a long way, covering the Mexican wolf, the grizzly, the cougar (in a foreword for Harley Shaw's „Soul Among Lions") and now the jaguar. These fine books should be considered a series, and appreciated as a totality. The concept of a jaguar reserve in Sonora as proposed by Brown and Gonzalez has set a high goal for conservation efforts. Until then, the vast majority of us will have to live with Brown's cold comfort that „the thought of such a cat's presence is enough in itself".

Not the usual jaguar !
Change your mental image of the big, spotted cat crouching in leafy jungle shadows and enter the world of jaguars living a hundred miles or so south of the US-Mexican border in dry, rugged mountains. "Borderland Jaguars" gives a fascinating overview of these cats: the threats by man's presence and development of its shrinking habitat, and the possibility that the animal may be threatened to the point of extinction in the region. The well-researched book includes sections about how man, from pre-hispanic times to first explorers, hunters and settlers viewed the jaguar. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in these endangered cats, and especially conservation in the borderland region.

Concise and useable
I bought my 'new', used ibook on ebay and so have no manual. The guy was nice enough to send it with Jaguar installed though, so I popped over to amazon, and bought this little guide. I am up and running, with an updated ISP, browser (safari, free at apple), and cooking along with icons making sense and configurations configured, ALL because of this little book! Now I know I have to get one of those big heavy books for the Big Stuff, but I am good to go in the meantime.

Great intro to OS X
I stumbled upon this book at a CompUSA and have found it to be one of the the best basic but thorough overviews of OS X 10.2.x. I needed a book to give my users new to OS X. I wanted something to help them get used to the new inteface and features but I didn't want them overwhelmed by too much detail. This book fit perfectly. It uses text and illustrations very well and describes things clearly. Everyone who has used this book has gotten up to speed quickly and with little help from me. That's success!

What a gem!
I am a recent convert from the 'PC' world to the MAC world. I was looking for a book to get me into the MAC quickly and easily. I am very computer literate on the 'PC' but needed the translation into the Apple world. A friend of mine has praised Greg Simsic's books on Photoshop, so I knew this would probably be a good book to consider. I have been very happy with it. It is concise and clear and seems to point out all the things I need to know to become comfortable with the MAC. It is slim enough I can keep it in the bag with my G4 laptop-always ready for quick reference. There is a very thorough index and table of contents to get you to what you need to know. And the information is clear and to the point. It seems to cover all of the basic information for me to get around the OSX system and its applications. I cannot believe the reasonable price on this book. I don't think I have ever bought a computer book [this price]. What a bargain this book is ...

Combo action and character
Action begins on page one, doesn't stop till the end. Combines all the elements to make those long trips seem very short. I'm looking forward to more by this author.

The Jaguar
I found this book to be very suspensful and quite refreshing. The detail that went into this book allows your imagination to explore and want to search even deeper, to find what else is going to happen.I would and will recommend this book to my Business Partners and friends. Its wonderful to have an author with a Vision and creativity. GREAT JOB !!! When is your next book coming out??

A Great Book!
I really enjoyed reading this book and have encouraged my friends and family to buy it. From the first time I reviewed the book prior to buying, I couldn't stop reading it.

The characters were well developed and the plot was interesting and captivating. In addition, the book was very descriptive. From the descriptions, I could actually visualize the characters, settings and actions.

This book's plot had interesting "twists" and I can't wait to read another book by this author. I highly recommend the "Jaguar".

this book
This book is excellent. I read it in 6th grade and loved it. It's length daunted me at first but the content makes it a breeze. It's rich and detailed. You can at time almost believe you could be a were-jaquar as well. It is a rich tapestry. I recommend it to everyone. I was so upset when I found it was out of print.

One of the greatest books I've ever read!
I first read this book when I was nine years old, and even nine years later I hace never forgotten the gripping emotions I feel when reading it. I am quite an avid reader, usually going through as many as ten books in a week. Naturally, I have come across many different types of books ranging from horrid to wonderful. This story not only managed to enthrall me, it drew me into the story and made me feel like I was there with Mixcatl all throughout the story. I am currently reading it to my eleven-year-old and eight-year-old brothers, and they love it almost as much as I do! This is a fantastic story that every fantasy fan should not be without!

this is a great book
this book is a good book i have it already but i wanted to by another one i juat wanted to say this is a great book and i highly recomended it

Jaguar E Type: The Definitive History
Published in Hardcover by Automobile Quarterly (June, 1990)
Authors: Phillip Porter, Maurice D. Hendry, and Philip Porter
Amazon base price: $84.95
Average review score:

The greatest of all works on the magnificent Jaguar E-type.

Rarely does a book's title reflect accurately on its contents, as does Phillip Porter's "Jaguar E-type, The definitive history". One's initial impression is of physical presence, for this is a massive work in all respects. Leafing through the book for the first time, one is immediately struck by a sense of awe that this could possibly represent the work of one man. There can be no doubt this is Porter's legacy, for which he laboured long and hard and gave much of himself.

The foreword is written by sportsman Briggs Cunningham, hinting that the car's racing heritage will figure prominently within. This is indeed the case, for fully a third of the content is dedicated to competition. The greater volume of the book, however, deals with the production car, against an historical timeline that begins with its evolution and conception and extends, rather than ends, with the E-type as it continues to exist today.

It is clear that Porter is unabashedly passionate about this greatest of all sportscars, but he masterfully avoids what could have been a eulogy and creates both a powerful reference work and an entertaining read. "The definitive history" brings together a multitude of colourful personalities and anecdotes and weaves these into a framework of facts, insights and specifications. There are literally hundreds of photographs and illustrations, some of which will be familiar to those who have read other books on the subject but the vast majority of which have never been published before.

History and objectivity are often mutually exclusive and if there can be fault found in this work it would be historian's soft disdain for cars which diverged from the pure lines of the Series 1 two-seaters. This, however, does nothing to detract from what is an otherwise magnificient accomplishment. There will be no other comprehensive histories written about the legendary Jaguar E-type, for none could possibly better this one.

Nick Saltarelli 1968 E-type OTS

Massive tome, excruciatingly detailed.<BR>
Phillip Porter's reference on the Jaguar E-Type that other authors cite as their source. This is a must read if you are at all interested in E-Types. Some of it may not be too flattering to Sir Wm Lyons or Jaguar but it tells the story as only an insider could. You will learn about the inspiration, design, developement, manufacture and end of production of the model

Definitive is the word
A massive effort. One of the most complete references ever to E-Type history. Hundreds of black and white and color illustrations. Insights into design, manufacturing, marketing and service. Production counts, export statistics, model specifications. This is not a repair book. It is a comprehensive history.

Blood Jaguar
Published in Digital by LTDBooks ()
Author: Allan Serafino
Amazon base price: $5.00
Average review score:

Past and Present Weave a Heart-pumping Adventure
Allan Serafino has a marvelous gift for bringing the vivid country in which he has sent his story of murder and time travel. Not just the mental eye but all the other senses are engaged as he describes the bustling Mexican bazaar, the dense tropical jungle-and scenes from a time long gone from memory. One can smell the incense and leafmold, hear the screech of the monkeys and the pounding ceremonial drums, feel the steamy humidity and the sting of mosquitoes, see the brilliant patchwork of tropical blooms and the shadowy figures of ancient warriors long dead.

The protagonist, Hugh Falkins, is a young man teetering on the edge of adulthood whose impulsive decision to run from what he prefers not to face only forces him to confront a situation he could never have imagined. Mr. Serafino skillfully conveys Hugh's sense of isolation, his sense that he lacks a place that is securely his own. His search for himself slowly unfolds as he faces danger, death and events that take him far beyond anything he could ever have imagined.

The pacing of this well-researched adventure is compelling and filled with more than enough plot twists to entertain readers of any age. The cast of characters are varied and all solidly defined, with most of them rarely ending up being who they were thought to be. And, as if artifact thieves and attempted murder weren't enough, the action is further complicated by the addition of an ongoing battle between the Mexican army and Guatemalan rebels.

This is a superb adventure-based coming-of-age novel with all the necessary ingredients to keep readers' minds off alternative forms of entertainment for the duration.

Absolutely Fantastic!
This is one of the best Young Adult adventure novels I've read in a long time. Allan Serafino combines fantasy, adventure, mystery, and even a little bit of romance, in this compelling read. Young Hugh Falkins searches out an ancient Mayan mystery in the jungles of Mexico. The plot is exciting, the characters interesting, and the conclusion fascinating. Highly recommended -- and not just for young readers!

The best book available on the subject
I haven't found a better book to lead one through the intricacies of this elegant machine. Even the non-mechanic E-type owner should have this book as a reference, and it would be a wise investment for those thinking of buying one of the world's finest automobiles

A "must have" service reference on the E-Type.<BR>
This is a collection of reprints of the original Jaguar service manuals for the Series 1 and Series 2 E-Type. It also includes a reprint of the original owners handbook as well as a section on modifying your E-Type for what would now be considered vintage racing. This is the only service manual you will need to maintain these vintage models. It does not have the nuts and bolts details that you might want if your were restoring an E-Type but nontheless it is a must have if you own one of these cars

Never read anything so consistently wistful.
This book is introspective without being maudlin, and I find
myself struggling for a better word than "wistful", but alas,
no cross-referenced OED at my fingertips.

Therefore: I can promise you this, there's not a happy ending in the book, and I found myself at first very disappointed in this growing trend. At some point in the third short story, I realized that he would supply no easy answers, and the converse might prove true: nothing but hard questions from here on.

Stories wrapped up neatly, even with the bad guy winning, aren't a possibility for Shepard. Life is like that sometimes, and the choices that lead you to a place you wish you hadn't visited. But, since you're there, take in the scenery and try to pass on a warning to others...

This is my first formal introduction to Lucius Shepard; it won't be my last meeting with his work, for sure.

A fabulous grab-bag of stories
The Jaguar Hunter is still the best introduction to the frustratingly inconsistent work of Lucius Shephard. Shephard is at his best in short stories and some of those in this collection show a real mastery of the form, telling often quite simple moral tales in settings packed dense with strange underpinning imagery and meaning.

The collection divides into several different overlapping types: traveller's tales, New England horror, Latin American magic realism, those dealing with the ongoing shadow cast by Nazism, fantasy etc. It is really a matter of taste which you prefer: my own favourites are the title story, which tingles with atmosphere and magical possibility; the two treatments of the legacy of the Third Reich - the terrifying 'Mengele', and the bizarre, menacing 'A Spanish Lesson'; and the magnificent 'R&R'. I like the New England-set tales less, but even they far outdo Stephen King.

Shephard's writing has never been better than is these early stories (and also in the underrated novel 'Life During Wartime'); lush but never bloated and often ironic but always moral. I just wish he would find his form again and stop writing yet more vampire novels!

Fourteen short stories, including a novella new to print
Fourteen short stories, including a novella new to print, provide a fine collection of Lucius Shepard's skills in Jaguar Hunter, and outstanding anthology headed by a Nebula-winning title story. From a war of the future and wind spirits to a woman's end of life, this is filled with diverse plots.

Good - but outdated...
This book was written for PowerBuilder 7 (now 7.03) and Jaguar CTS 3.0 (now Sybase Enterprise Application Server 3.6.1.08). While PowerBuilder hasn't changed much EAS most *certainly* has. When Jaguar 3.0 came out there was no database persistence standard for the Java platform, EJB was barely a spec (v 0.4), and a lot of things that we take very much for granted in the J2EE Specification simply didn't exist. Also, Jaguar 3.0 was a much 'clunkier' system to administer than that newer 3.6.1 release that Sybase has done. While many of the concepts discussed in this book from the PowerBuilder side are still applicable, some of the screen shots and processes are dated on the Jaguar side. Still, the book represents a good history lesson if nothing else. Being that this is the *only* book on the subject of using PowerBuilder as a front end to your Jaguar/EAS server-side code I'd say get it. But it's quickly become in *dire* need of a revamp. Are you listening, Mr. Barlotta??

Best Book on the Subject (but got sacked after I read it)
The site was going to use PB7 and Jaguar - exciting! I ordered the book, read it, used the many fantastic code bits to get an n-tier PB7 app up and running. Fantastic book.

4 months later, the client decided to use Java, scrap PB development and sacked me without even a day's notice. Oh well. I still think Jaguar and the book and PB7 are tops! But the lesson learned is that Powerbuilder is on the way down and out!

Excellent book for PB developers moving ahead with EAServer
This book can get you started just in the way you would like to. Mike understands what PB developers need to get started with Web development and Jaguar. Although EAS versions have changed, but the basic concepts suc as "stateless/stateful, instance pooling, transaction support, connection, etc" remain the same. This book is not for Java with EAServer - this is PowerBuilder with EAServer - as the name suggests.

True Conservation Adventurel
An inspiring chronicle of conservation endeavors, sometimes against great odds. Learn what it is like to be a conservation heroine - the adventures, the frustrations, the triumphs. Jaguar Totem is not only a compelling story, it is also a clarion call for action on behalf of the natural world. Anne LaBastille believes that anyone, any time, any place, can do something to save the beauty, wildness, and natural resources of our planet. I agree!

By far the best work by this Environmentalist to date!
Anne LaBastille made her mark by showing the world how life can be simple and rewarding thorugh her Woodswoman Trilogy. Now "Jaguar Totem" has encompassed all of her life's experiences in the cause for conservation in a delightfully frank and clear perspective. With hope and dreams worn on her sleeve, she takes the reader from the beginnings of her travels and accumulation of experience with a thoroughly rewarding update after each chapter. A complex woman in a complex world, Dr LaBastille proves how one person can make a difference. If this is her best; I can't wait for the next.

AZ Reader from NY Comments on Dr. Anne LaBastille
I have been privileged to participate in Dr. LaBASTILLE'S Writer's Workshops for the past ten years. Her works from Woodswoman to Jaguar Totem have brought our family much reading pleasure. As an Ecologist, Dr. LaBastille takes you on several journeys that enlighten the reader to what it means to spend time alone in her cabin in the wilds of the Adirondacks, where she relates to her enviornment. She is an intellectual with indepth perception about the woods she knows so well and all the ingredients that make up Mother Nature. She travels nationally and internationally and is well known in her field of endeavor. And, in addition possesses much skill in photography and lectures about her works. Jaguar Totem is an excellent read and I was proud to add this book to my collection of Dr. LaBASTILLE'S LITERARY accomplishments. Her work is important to the present generation and generations to come.
