13 working parts to the heart
I've seen too many drunk, passed-out, "Maya" in Guatemala, laying belly-up on the side of the road, the asphalt ribbon some strange skimmer in a waterless aquarium of patchwork land plots, to really romanticize the "beauty" in drunken public rituals and feasts. Yet, Prechtel makes a really solid case for Beauty breaking the Glass Ceiling to the Gods: Beauty in the ornate ancient eloquence of their speech (often expressed in food terms of deliciousness and "cooking"); Beauty in their many layers of opulent, intricate clothing; and yes, Beauty in being drunk out of their gourds from having made themselves irresistibly delicious to the Gods during an income-leveling, life-renewing, inner-twin calling, Desire-Fest with the Gods.

Other than having to walk two miles with no shoes to fill a tank with water before going to school, it makes me Wanna Be Maya. I guess I have to start with my Bundle: objects, previously unknown to me, exactly like one seen in a dream. "One's power would then have an actual physical place to sit...The spirits must have a home, or they become sad orphans or renegades. A person whose spirit has no home becomes depressed or a criminal". Maybe if I could have a dream about mousetraps or blossoming avocado seeds, I would be spared the ignomy of 21st century affluent society. Then I too could divine that Holy Boy has his hand near Mountain Goddess's cucaracha and avoid getting lice in my eyebrows. Or at least have enough breakfast cereal to fill my molars.

The real message here is, don't send missionaries, Peace-Corp volunteers and aid (lawyers, guns and money), it ain't going to change something that was never really broke. Or if it is broke, it wasn't meant to last that long anyway, and just gets fixed the time-honored way of remembering the Gods with feeding Them deliberately and ritually. Try telling that to a Psych major Peace Corp volunteer, and watch them beat themselves with a solar oven brick. Chiviliu is laughing all the way to the buried cigar box.

one of the best books I've ever read
Anyone with an interest in indigenous people as well as a lust for fascinating accounts of wayward travellers will find this impossible to put down. Humorous, yet poetic at times, the writer has a gift to share, and he does so with incredible dexterity. The insights into how the Maya lived within nature, their social heirarchy, inside jokes, love of life, and slow victimization by 20th (and 21st) century power-mongers make this account a valuable resource for all human beings.

Interestingly, the Mayan calendar, put forth centuries ago, ends within this decade, fodder for Armegeddon-theorists in the last half century. Prechtel's book helps to explain how this happened before his eyes and the role he has come to play in keeping the soul of the Maya alive.

This should be a must-read for anthropologists, linguists, spiritualists, environmentalists, economists, missionaries of all faiths, travellers, and policy makers. And yet with such a broad base, it remains a fascinating narrative as well. This was unquestionably one of the best books I have ever read.

Must read for those trying to understand a tortured culture
Even after traveling to Guatemala a half dozen times for business and pleasure, this book opened many doors to understanding the embattled Mayan culture and to build a greater respect for it. Alas, I was saddened by the book's message -- that another unique culture is rapidly disappearing -- but armed with the knowledge gained from reading the book, I feel that I will be able to relate to indigenous peoples and their plight better, thanks to the authors. Read it.

Sorry, you'll haveto buy your own copy
This book is very well thought out and written to be easily understood, whether you only dip in when you need help or read it from front to back. A number of techniques - thumbable chapter headings on the edge of every page, Notes, Tips, Related Solutions (saving visits to the contents or index) - all make this a book that is a joy to refer to.

Despite some glitches (eg. it's not until Chapter 4 that the diagrams match their comments - they're out of step by one), if you asked to borrow my copy I'd say, "Sorry, mine's in use; you'll have to buy your own copy."

Great introduction to Jaguar
This is a terrific book. It's about installing and using Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar not, as one person wrote here, about type and graphics. If one wants a type and graphics book, I'd recommend a volume covering those subjects specifically. However, the author does have a chapter on using fonts under Mac OS X, and how font managers work. This is something few books about Apple's operating system cover. Maybe that particular reviewer didn't notice, but I did. There are a few production errors, such as misplaced figures, but all in all, I recommend this book highly.

Beautifully written...
I don't expect computer books to be well written. I expect them to be straightforward and dull. Mr. Steinberg's book is a refreshing change. Not only is it carefully crafted for readability, but his subtle touches of humor are a refreshing change.

The book is a great introduction to Mac OS X Jaguar for users of the older Mac systems. It made installation and setup a breeze, and I welcomed the extensive troubleshooting chapter and the introduction to UNIX. The only quibble I have is that some illustrations in Chapter 3 are mislabeled, obviously a production mistake. The book is nonetheless a great read and extremely informative. Highly recommended.

Jaguar: One Man's Battle to Establish the World's First Jaguar Preserve

An excellent book for everyone!
My boyfriend had read "Beyond the Last Villiage" (also by Rabinowitz) and really enjoyed it so when we saw this one I figured I would see if I liked it. I am into nature and wildlife and this book is filled with all the goodies. I couldn't put down the book, I read it in 2 days! I wanted to see what happened to the jaguar that he caught and find out what happened to it.
I highly reccommend this book to anyone that is interested in our environment and wildlife. Now from reading this book I am planning my next vacation to Belize. I am in Thailand now and plan on visiting the National Park that he studied tigers and jaguars at...SO...my reccommendation is buy this book you won't regret it!

Armchair adventure and hair-raising thrills, jaguar style.
I never would have chosen this book, but it showed up in my mail and, well, what else is there to do but read it? I'm so glad I did.

This is a fascinating story of a zoologist who, in 1983, went into the rain forest of Central America to study the jaguar in its native habitat.

"On Dec. 2, 1984, the Cockscomb Basin was declared a National Forest Reserve, with a no hunting provision for the protection of the jaguar. This made Belize the first country in the world to protect jaguars."

This book tells an utterly fantastic tale -- sometimes terrifying -- of how that came to be. It portrays a world most safely enjoyed from the comfort of an armchair; a very personal story that is a combination of natural history and hair-raising adventure in the Stanley Livingston tradition.

An excellent read
This book will appeal to readers who have a specific interest in jaguars and those with more overall conservation leanings. Dr. Rabinowitz is a pioneer in research on this elusive animal and his groundbreaking work shows just how vital the jaguar is to rainforest ecologist, and the devestating impact man has had on this magnificent species. The book is also a remarkable story about the animals and people of the rainforest, who we get to know through Dr. Rabinowitz's exciting narrative. I found myself laughing and crying all at once and was not able to put this book down!

A Pretty Decent Hintbook For Beginners...
I got this book after having a Jaguar for two years previous to my purchase. It's very informative, and quite packed with some good tidbits for the earlier games in the Jaguar library. Why they didn't make another one taking into account the later games is beyond me (other than the fact that Atari went out of business).

Unfortunately, if you're searching strictly for cheats, you're better off today checking around the Atari Jaguar sites on the Internet, as there are an unbelieveable amount of sites that carry cheat sheets and FAQs for these games.

If, however, you're a beginning gamer with some of the earlier titles for the Jaguar system, and needs some visual walkthroughs, I'd suggest purchasing this book. If anything, it's a great addition to your Jaguar collection, and even contains some screens from other games that were upcoming in the library that you may want to check out as well.

Helpful
This book was pretty helpful - it gave hints on stratigies, and on games with multiple levels, it gave hints on every level. It also has codes. My advice is is if you have many of the games in this book, it is worth the money.

Defending the Land of the Jaguar : A History of Conservation in Mexico

Good, concise narrative of Mexican conservation history
Simonian's book provides an excellent overview of the principal figures and events in the history of conservation in Mexico. The only improvement that could be made would have been to offer a more detailed analysis of the major events, leading to a profounder understanding of the reasons for the current state of conservation in Mexico. Ofcourse, this could only have been done in the course of longer book. For readers trying to understand conservation and environmental policy in the larger context of Mexican political and cultural history, I would strongly recommend reading an additional text on the general history of modern Mexico.

Kudos to Simonian for an excellent job!
Kudos to author Lane Simonian for producing the definitive English-language account of Mexican environmental history. Defending the Land of the Jaguar traces the history of conservation and environmentalism in Mexico from the pre-Conquest era to roughly 1992 and the NAFTA debates. I read this book with some trepidation, since it's a subject so close to my heart, having covered interior and border environmental issues for the past few years. Conveniently, the book ends just at the time that I entered Mexico. In some ways I wish I had had this book, but I guess I was lucky to be able to explore some of these topics on my own. Do I recommend this book? Definitely. This is a must read for anyone interested in Latin American environmental issues.

Jaguar: The Definitive History of a Great British Car

History of the Jaguar car
Good reference on Jaguar history from Swallow sidecars to present. Many black and white illustrations.

An alternative to the model-driven company history
This is a top-notch automotive history. It details the company from its start, but rather than following along model by model, it tells the story of the people. It offers much greater insight into the people behind the cars than any other book on the subject. It's a little short on facts and figures, however, so you're best going somewhere else for that

Northrop P-61 Black Widow: The Complete History and Combat Record
Published in Paperback by Motorbooks International (May, 1991)
Authors: Garry Pape, John M. Campbell, and Donna Campbell
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

The most comprehensive book currently available on the P-61.
This is a book filled with good photographs. The cover photo itself is unusual and striking. The authors begin with some background history of radar (prior to 1940), it being integral to this aircraft. They then move on to aircraft development, crew training, deployment, and finally, post war usage. Along the way they have unit histories, and some very interesting individual recollections (P-61 vs. P-47 is a highlight). Additionally the inclusion of information on field modifications is good (one squadron moved the radar operator and his equipment to the gunner's position). Somewhat disappointingly the authors don't provide three view drawings of the major variants so they can be visually compared. It would also have been useful to know what the original performance specifications issued by the Army Air Corps were so the reader would know how close Northrop came to "hitting the mark". Also more on: aircraft layout (eg. fuel tank locations), construction (eg. were unusual materials used?), and flight test anecdotes, recollections, and data would also be welcome to explain the reasons for variant evolution, color scheme change, etc. The book ends with six appendices including an extensive bibliography. All in all, while it is not as definitive as the title might imply or as I would have wished, this is the most comprehensive book currently available on the P-61. Anyone interested in the "Black Widow" should own this book.

Incredible quality, What aviation books should be.
Very high quality. Glossy paper. Jet black print. Pictures look like a million bucks. If you are a fan of the Black Widow you will not be disappointed. Also has some great color photos of the postwar military and civilian Black Widows. Much better value than the P-61 warbird tech series book that is printed with grey ink and bargin basement paper. I agree with the thorough review below this review

JAGUAR AHHH!!
Jaguar is a very exciting book that will keep you turning pages. It is about a young boy named Jake Lansa. It is a series from the first book, Thunder Cave. Jake's gransfather is a Hopi Indian and his father is a field biologist, Robert, who is called Doc. Doc is helping his best friend, Bill to make a Jaguar reservation. But when the boat mysteriously explodes, it kills Bill and injures Buzz, the pilot for the Jaguar tracking device. Doc decides to create the dream of his best friend with his son and his girlfriend, Flanna (Jake's mother died), along with a strange person named Silver who has a boat ready for them. They reach the reservation spot, and with the help of Raul, an Indian, they track a jaguar mother and her 2 kids. Doc falls ill and a terrorist who knows Silver takes over. It seems that their reservation spot is near a gold mine, and a few like Silver and the captor want to get rich. Flanna killed him and they were safe. If you want the whole story, you should read this great book! You can also read The Last Lobo, which continues from Jaguar.

Awesome book of survival and intrigue
This is a great book to use for the classroom. I plan to use it in my 6th grade Language Arts class. This book has it all - great characters, superb plot, survival/adventure aspects, and internal and external conflicts. I look forward to reading more of Roland Smith's books.

Good book to read
In the book Jaguar there is a boy and his dad was a scientist and he studied Jaguars. His dad had to go to Brazil and he had to stay with his grandpa in a retirement home. A few months later he got a letter from his dad saying that he could come down to Brazil to find out what happened in Brazil, you'll have to read the book.

Then Joseph takes her on to Merida where she is to meet up with Dr. Herns. > > Delores has left behind her suitcase. Lennea decides to look in it for an address book so she can call friends and hopefully locate Delores. At the very bottom of the suitcase Lennea feels a bulge, when she runs her finger along it she feels a clasp and > > it open up revealing six thick rows of American dollars totaling sixty-thousand dollars. Now Lennea really starts to worry about what Delores was mixed up in. > > This is one of those books that grab you from the very first sentence > and keeps you guessing who the good guys really are right to the very end of the book. The ending is a nice surprise. > > The authors go into great detail about the Mayan's and their culture. > The beautiful descriptions of the scenery made me want to book a trip > there myself. > > Loretta Jackson and Vickey Britton are a sister/co-authoring team. > These best selling authors have produced a mystery series and over ten > single title mystery/romances. Their work has been produced in paper- back, hardback, audio, and electronic format. > >

Couldn't put it down!
From the minute Lennea arrives in Mexico she has nothing but trouble. First, her friend disappears in the airport. Then she finds hidden money in her suitcase. Not wanting to go to the police until she can find Delores and talk to her, Lennea soon finds herself in danger when someone wants their money back. I have read other books by this talented duo. I like their unique settings and the fast-paced action of their books. If you liked this one you might also enjoy Arctic Legacy.

A Recreational Mystery for all Ages

I found Path of the Jaguar to be enjoyable recreational reading. It was light and fast, a little incongruous (would so many natives have attended the lectures? Why would an educated young woman go clear around the world to a strange country on a crush?), but that's the way with recreational mysteries. With Path of the Jaguar, Vickie Britton and Loretta Jackson are obviously not trying to compete with John Grisham.

They have obviously done a bit of research that establishes the setting and plot anchors. From there the story progresses with gripping suspense.

Path of the Jaguar took me back to my Nancy Drew days and I thank Vickie and Loretta for that. Like the Nancy Drews I devoured as a teen-ager, I read Path of the Jaguar in one sitting. I would recommend it for my early and mid teen nieces, even nephews and anyone who is looking for relief from the deeper, more serious mature fiction that is common today.

E type : end of an era

From a diehard E-Type enthusiast...
I purchased this book just prior to buying my first E-Type in 1982. Although the writing style reflects the author's background as a newpaper editor, his knowledge of these terrific cars enabled me to make an educated decision when buying my car. Since the book was published in 1976, much of the information regarding parts availability and suppliers has changed (thankfully for the better), and many of the photos have dated themselves. Still, I would advise anyone who has considered allowing a Jaguar E-Type to move in with them to first buy two books: this one, and a good shop manual. Armed with this knowledge, your E-Type experience should be a positive one. I enjoyed my 1965 coupe for almost sixteen years and never once called for a tow truck

History of the E for afficianados
Handy, matter of fact history. Some interesting observations on purchase and ownership. Some technical drawings which I haven't seen elsewhere

Author clearly displays a passion for the marque.
I first bought this book back in '87 when I purchased my first Jag. The title of this book says it all. To even HAVE the word ERA associated with a particular model of car is very unique. When the Toyota Tercel is finally discontinued, will a book be written about it at all? And who would call it "the end of an era"? Chris Harvey respectfully tells the history of the heart and soul that was given the E-TYPE, and he understands the wave of emotion the car imparts to the casual observers as well as the patent enthusiast. Chris' perspective gives the reader real insight into the hows and whys of the XKE, how it evolved over the years, the forces that affected this evolution, and finally, why it had to end. He explains well the balance of art & engineering that went into the car, and at the same time makes this a practical read for the E-Type owner, restorer or auto historian. A must have for the E-TYPE library.
