Enough detail to be interesting; coherently written
I read this book on the 'plane from Seattle to Chicago a week or so ago. Given the period '89-'98 that the book covers, I was pleasantly surprised to see the included material on project 'Tempest' (Discovery II) released in 1999.

The author clearly had personal contact with many of the Landrover engineers and project staff for all three Discovery projects, and this added immensely to the value.

Much of the material is apparently leveraged from earlier magazine articles which likely helped it be factually accurate based on Land Rover staff available when the article was first published.

Thoroughly recommended for the Land Rover fan.

A Classic
It is about the "old" Discovery (1989-1998) and James Taylor is probably the best person to tell us the story of this great vehicle. Every Discovery owner must have a copy of this book to understand the project evolution since 1989, with good information about its changes along those years (engines, gear boxes, electronics etc). There are good tips for those who want to buy a good second hand Discovery. In the end, Taylor describes the "New Discovery" project launched in 1999.

Great info for Disco owners
If you own a Discovery, irrespective of the country you are in, you will get a lot of info from this book. The Author has researched it well, and covers all the issues I wanted to know about my vehicle. Some of the photos are great, I esp. like the convertible model - a shame they were never put that one into production - I want one of those! This is not a technical manual as such, but it still has a lot of facts & figures. It is also helpful if you are considering options from other models and want to see what they look like. I have an ES model, but would like to get the factory wheel arch flares, and I know what they would look like... Recommended for a Discovery or Land Rover enthusiast, or if you intend to purchase one and want to do your research.

Essential for any Series III Owner
Pretty much essential for any Series III owner, who does some of his/her own maintenance.

Not only does it show how the various bits go together in clear airfix-style exploded diagrams, the part numbers are extremely useful when ordering new parts. For a start you have a chance of getting what you ordered from your supplier.

Best restoration book I've ever read !
Very helpful for my 1958 Land Rover restoration. It helps me to verify which part of my Landie's restoration to be self-made, and which part to be ordered. Now that my Landie's restoration done, I was very proud of my Landie. Thanks to the book.

A Land(y)mark!
I own several books on Series Land Rovers and this one is a much loved volume in my workshop reading and reference library. As someone who is currently restoring a 64, SWB, Series 2a from the rolling chassis up, I can say without any hesitation that this book is every bit the masterpiece.

Whether you are a novice starting out or an old hand looking for a good general restoration guide this book covers many areas in detail that some of the workshop manuals don't. This book is chock full of photographs with easy to follow text and is full of brilliant advice on all things Series Land Rover. I cannot recommend this work highly enough as I have found it fills the gaps that my other manuals don't.

Contents include detailed discussion of Heritage, Buying and what to look for in various models, the pitfalls of different models and the like. Section three gets straight into the Bodywork where the detailed photographs and text begin. This takes you right through every facet of the Series 2's body. There are notes on Series 1 restoration and mechanical restorations which are detailed and lavish with some exploded parts. Finally you are taken through a nice Interior and Electrics section and the book eases you down with information on Chassis numbering, Tech specs, Workshop safety issues, Development Milestones, Production Figures and so on. A Superb work that should be on every Series Land Rover owners shelf.

A good place to start.
I was expecting a better cross section of Land Rover Defenders throughout the years. The book did concentrate on Defenders, but the earlier models were basically museum pieces. I would like to have seen more of a model by model breakdown. This is a picture book of defenders in all sorts of predicaments. Not a pretty sight. You have to give Land Rover credit for not being afraid to show their vehicles in the worst light. This book is an extremely easy read. If you consider the price of this book it's not a bad buy at all. Would recommend.

O.K., but something's missing...
This volume is satisfactory in that it presents Land Rover vehicles in action with many colorful photos and good text, but the content belies its sub title("British 4-Wheel Drive from 1948"), for it shows very few photos of Land Rover vehicles between 1948 and the Defender model from the late '80s. A bit disappointing for "early" Rover enthusiasts. But great for Defender owners!

Good but lacks items to watch out for when buying used
Like most of the current books on Land Rover you get a sense of where Land Rovers' roots are and where the company is headed today under the watchful eyes of BMW who bought Rover in 1994. Unlike the books about the Range Rover model of the Land Rover line-up you don't get a true picture of maintence items to watch out if you want to buy a used "Utility" as they are also known.

However, since I work as a Land Rover Technician in the US I might lean toward a more rounded technical book then most people. Still, if the reader has an interest about those rugged, square Defenders or Series 3 trucks rolling around them this book goes a long way in explaining what they are all about.

Good general information about 90's and 110's.
I thought this book had a lot of good general information about the history of the coil sprung Land Rover.

Excellent advice on towing, off pavement driving.
This book has the most comprehensive advice on towing I have ever seen. Although it is from the UK perspective as far as laws are concerned, it is still useful for US readers. Loading, vehicle dynamics, how high to mount the hitch, and how far back the trailer's axle should be are all covered. This information alone is worth the purchase cost.

Oh, and it gives good advice on driving off the pavement, too.

Simply The Best is more than simply good!
Martin Hodder has done an excellent job writing this overall Land Rover book.A good early history, touching all the models including Range Rover. A great chapter on the Land Rover V8 and another good one on choosing a Land Rover for purchase. Photography is very good. I personally would have liked a few more pictures of the older Land Rovers, the Series I's, II's, IIa's. and III's in a more organized and detailed framework, but this is an excellent starter book for the enthusiast. Not too simple and not too technical. A great book.
