Enthusiast Shop ManualWhat complete service manual does not have electrical schematics? I'll tell you! This one! If you intend to work on this car, buy the Haynes manual.
Forget Haynes...This is the best car maintenance/shop book I've ever seen. Probably the best feature is that Rod tells you how to do things with simple tools, or even how to come up with makeshift tools, including how to improvise a homemade torque wrench for tight spaces, etc. This is a true "shadetree mechanic" type book.
Important informationThis book covers ALL models of the Mazda Miata with 1.8 liter engines and pop-up headlights. It does not cover the fixed headlight 'Mk2' model introduced in late 1990s. Hope this is helpful. Rod Grainger author & publisher.

No bad at all but...It gives you a good basic about Rotary engine. But it won't give you any secrets. It just that same old information. No step by step methods. Just some same old information. Nothing more, nothing less. If you think it's like "How to Modify your RX7" by Al Downing and Dave Emanuel book. No, don't count on it.
Great book! This is an easy to read and informative book, unlike many of the performance books I have read over the years (much better than the first RX-7 Performance Book of the 1980's). It definitely helped me to look forward and think about what I want to do with my car before I go out and max out my credit card on parts that will be more detrimental than helpful in the long run. Now I feel I can better figure out where I want to go with my car (form vs. function), and set up a feasible budget to coincide w/ the direction I choose. The author is not only knowledgeable, but he is a good writer.
A must-have for any RX-7 enthusiast...This is one of the best performance handbooks I've ever read, bar none. The book covers the history of the car, and virtualy every kind of performance upgrade is covered in easily understood terms. It also tells which products work best for different applications, and gives great advice on racing the car in SCCA events. This is the RX-7 bible. Buy it now and enjoy.

has helped me!I bought a used '91 Mazda Miata. Didn't know anything about it. This manual has definitely help me to figure out where everything is and what to look for.
I purchased this book and the Haynes Miata shop manual (90-97). These two together give me about a 80% understanding of what is going on with my Miata.
Really deliversThere should be a copy of this in the trunk of every 1.6 liter Miata. Much more user friendly than the "official Mazda" book, the Enthusiast's Shop Manual is well illustrated and clear. The idea of an enthusiast's manual is a good one -- the book's written for the skilled and involved owner, not for the professional mechanic. My copy is covered with greasy fingerprints, which is the hallmark of a good manual.
Helpful adviceThis manual is for all 1.6 liter Miatas with pop-up headlights. It does not cover the post '98 model with fixed headlights, nor the 1.8 liter model (with pop-up headlights) for which there's a separate manual. I hope this advice is helpful - Rod Grainger, author & publisher.

Looks ok but dosn't really helpWhen you page through this book you notice all the great diagrams. It's not until use it that you realize none of the blow up diagrams have any parts labeled. The book has a lot of great procedures but most are not thorough enough and there is no general troubleshooting section to steer you in the right direction (other chiltons have this). For example, my Mazda lunged and quit working. I troubleshot a lot of systems before finding a weak spark. Then the only explanation for a weak spark in the book was the coil. I validated the coil did not meet their validation criteria and replaced it. But it did not work so I took it to the dealer. The dealer determined it was the distributor. The book had no validation or installation procedures for the distributor.
Chilton's Mazda Repair Manual No. 46802It is indeed a tough job to describe so many different models of Mazda vehicles in one book. While a lot of information is covered, I feel that too much space has been devoted to teaching the basics of how to do generic tasks. Not having seen any other Chilton's manuals, I don't know if this basic training appears in all manuals, but I beleive that the basics should be left out so that much more detail can be included about the specifics of the Mazda vehicles covered by the manual. The information included in Chapter 1 for example, should be in a General Mechanics book. Apart from that, I have found the manual helpful.
very practical and easy to read!Whenever you come across a car repair manual one would assume that it would be riddled with mechanics jargon and techie lingo. However, 323/Mx-3/626/Mx-6/Millenia/Protege 1990-1998 (Chilton's Total Car Care Repair Manual) by The NicholsChilton editors, is surprisingly easy to read and has clear charts and self-explanatory pictures. Even though I am not very technically inclined and I know that most of the exercises require a person whom is semi skilled in the realm of car maintenance and repair, I found this book to be useful; since now I understand what a mechanic does when he/she fixes any problems and that in itself makes it a good book and well worth the cost for this manual.

Notice timeSince there are some big changes on models later than 1990, this book won't be very useful if you want to use it on a car earlier than 90. also, it is not quite easy to understand if you don't have any background knowledge on cars.

It works for the "shade tree" mechanic. The section on front disc brake repair disassembly of the front wheel drive hubs is explained well in words and pictures. If there is anything negative it's the electrical section - it leaves you asking more questions than it answers.

InaccurateThe first need I had for information from my Haynes Ford Ranger manual was to locate a fuse in my 1999 Ranger XLT. The fuse diagram is wrong. No corrections are available at the Haynes website.
More of a question than a reviewI'm thinking about buying this book because I own a 2000 Ford Ranger, code-named J97, built in Thailand for sale throughout the world except North America.
Could it be that Mr Gow found the manual inaccurate because the US Ranger is a totally different vehicle from the Mazda-based Ranger that the rest of us use?

What Manual???When my little brother tells me to check this manual for help, I often reply "What manual". The thing is almost completely useless to me... I own a 1987 323 and I can hardly find any information about my car in it. If I had ten thumbs I'd point them all down for this book. Do not buy this book if you are looking for information about your 323.
Not Worth a PennyI bought this book to get a better understanding of the systems on my '80 RX-7. While reading, I've spent 75% of the time trying to weed through the text trying to locate the portions that applied to my vehicle. My advice would be to buy the Haynes manual which covers the specific vehicle, as this hodge-podge is very difficult to follow.
Illustrations were sparse, and the ones that are there are marginal at best. The printing company that was contracted for this job must have been the lowest bidder.
I also own a Suzuki Samurai, and the Factory Service Manual for it. I reccommend the factory books where available. Unfortunately, it's not available for the RX-7s. This is NOT EVEN CLOSE to the quality of a good factory manual.
One man's opinion.
Too much, to little, to late for me....This book lacked the indepth knoledge I have grown to look for in a book by Chilton. Too many cars for one book and the info seems to be mixed up slightly. NO troubleshooting charts as is said on the back cover, so my last thought is this book is very misleading.
