Swedish kids know best!
First, my two half-Swedish children, Liv and Erik, have read all the Pettson and Findus books many times and adore them. (PS, Professor, the author is Swedish, not Norwegian).

Liv says: They are magical, especially "Tomtemaskinen" (rough translation: The "Santa Machine"). We read it every Christmas.

Scott (48 yr old): These books are as special in their own way as Dr. Suess's books were to me when I grew up in the States. The artwork is suberb. At first glance, the illustrations simply document the story, but hold on, the longer you look the more you see that that tree is really brocolli, there is a small periscope sticking out of a worn boot by the door, one of the chickens has a stethescope and is listening to Pettson's taped-up foot, a sock hanging over the wood stove is darned using flesh-colored Band-aids, and small critters hide everywhere and do unexplained and unrelated things never appearing in the story itself, which is off spinning magic of its own.

While very much imaginative, the artwork is also old-fashioned in that everything is carefully drawn and authentically depicts what you see in a old cabin tucked deep into the cultural backwaters of rural Sweden. You cannot tell whether it is the 1890s, the 1930s, the 1960s or last week.

In all the books, the optimistic cat simply wants to discover and do things, much as a child; while Old Man Pettson is feeling his age and sometimes world-weary. But he is by no means a worn-out grump waiting for the the end. Rather, he is a creative, wonderfully eccentric inventor who will not let himself be outwitted by a mere cat! They spend a lot time thinking up ways to get the better of each other in a loving life of one-upmanship. Sometimes they team up to outwit a henhouse raiding fox or encroaching civilization.

Their antics are not slapstick, rather the humor builds up to a grand finale with a twist. They present a sort of Roald Dahl magic for the pre-pre-teens and will give any child (and adult) an authentic look at life in rural Sweden at its best.

I admit that I have never read the English translations, and I can only hope that the translator got it right; the author, Sven Nordqvist, sure did. It's hard to find a Swedish child who doesn't know each of these stories by heart, and better yet (at least for me) they far surpass Astrid Lindgren (of Pippi Longstocking fame) for just plain fun.

Hilarious & Heartwarming
Wow, what a great book! This story of Festus, the grumpy old man, and Mercury, the hyper cat, is one of the greatest kid's books ive ever read! The awesome pictures, funny story, and a great ending make it a must-read.

Children's literature at its best
I've read most of the Festus and Mercury books in the German translation with my three children. I can heartily recommend them to everyone age four and up. The stories of the somewhat wacky but gentle and humane Pettersen and his seemingly omniscient cat, Findus, with his generally wise insights into human behavior, are hilarious and heart-warming. Not to mention the beautiful pictures, in which new details can be found even at the 100th reading. American publishers, get these books back into print!!

hey babe...
I made the mistake of not stealing this book from my High School library years ago when I had the opportunity. I know that sounds bad, but this book is that good and I miss reading these brilliant gems.

Really Observing
The picture on the cover of my copy shows that Richard Brautigan let his hair grow long. The title ought to make it obvious that this book is by someone who has seen the total collapse of concepts like integrity. The poems included in this book were written from 1971 to 1976, a bit after Richard Brautigan's popular triumphs. Page 41 is not quite the middle of this book, but it is where he confronts "The Necessity of Appearing in Your Own Face." The obvious thing about it is "you have to be there."

An absolute gem
"Loading Mercury With A Pitchfork" is the most insightful and interesting book of poetry that I have ever read. Having not been familiar with Brautigan, I was shocked when I picked this book of the school library shelf to find the poems not rhyming or even melodious in their length. What I found was a mix of short insightful, witty, intellegent, and sometimes bizarre sketches from a truly gifted writter. This is a book that can be enjoyed in any form by anyone.

What's Up with the Messenger of the Gods?
Therese Francis has written a really nifty little book about the plagues and promises of Mercury when he goes backward over his own tracks. Remember the story of Mercury and the cattle of Apollo? It's a funny story and it describes the true nature of this Rascal in the Skies. It is very difficult to talk about Mercury since this planet rules your ability to talk in the first place and yet the yearly activities of Mercury are extremely important to a smooth running routine in life. Francis manages to demystify the subject and to provide helpful, comprehensive tactics to get the best out of Mercury's mercurial behavior! The book is easy to read, attractively printed and a great edition to a growing library of books on your favorite subject, astrology. I would like to buy a couple hundred of these books and send them to all my clients. That's how helpful it is to understand what's going on when Mercury goes retrograde.

retrograde heaven
a very well put together item i found a fascinating read, serious when it needs to be, yet subtely light also makes it an easy enjoyable read for both the well read and the ammature alike. keep writing them please ) just what we all need to pull us through the periods of refelection blessed be

Highly informative reading for students of astrology
The Mercury Retrograde Book is a compendium of observations and advice on how to not only survive, but thrive during the astrological condition known as the Mercury Retrograde three to four times a year. When a planet is retrograde, its energy turns inward and becomes reflective, with its areas of influence (and in the case of Mercury these have to do with communication and transportation, memory and thinking) subject to dysfunction or malfunction. The Mercury Retrograde Book is very welcome and highly informative reading for students of astrology and metaphysics.

Elements of Danger: Protect Yourself Against the Hazards of
Medical journalist Morton Walker, D.P.M., has an impressive list of credentials. He's written more than 70 books, fourteen of which were international bestsellers, has published more than twenty-two hundred magazine and newspaper articles, and appeared in numerous TV and radio talk shows. He's also received several awards and honors from various medical groups.

In his latest book, Elements of Danger: Protect Yourself Against the Hazards of Modern Dentistry, Dr. Walker takes on the dental profession. He focuses on the practice of using metal fillings, but also discusses other procedures, like root canals.
He says he found a "paradox, for the nature of dental care among industrialized nations has our dental health providers reacting to disease rather than keeping people's mouths functioning healthfully and well." He maintains that most dentists don't look at the patient as a complete individual or dental health as a part of overall good health.

Dr. Walker offers a thorough discussion of the potential problems of using metal fillings, especially those containing mercury. He includes a questionnaire that will help readers determine if their fillings are adversely affecting their health. He lists thirty symptoms of metal toxicity, including memory problems, depression, insomnia, heartburn, headaches, and fatigue.

Root canals can also lead to myriad health problems, particularly infection which can affect other parts of the body, and deterioration of the jawbone. He also includes a section on the dangers of fluoridation, reminding readers that fluoride is "an industrial waste product commonly sold as poison for killing rats and insects." He notes that the Food and Drug Administration now requires a warning label on all fluoridated toothpastes, advising consumers to contact a Poison Control Center if the toothpaste is accidently swallowed.

The final section of the book describes natural ways of achieving and maintaining good dental health, including guidelines for choosing a dentist that uses safe and non-toxic procedures. Dr. Walker also includes a list of resources.

Elements of Danger is must reading for those who have had or are contemplating metal fillings, root canals, or fluoridation. Get a copy for yourself, and an additional copy for loved ones who have had dental work, especially those with unexplained symptoms of illness.

Get the Mercury Out!
Elements of Danger is a well written well documented book on the hazards of Mercury fillings and root canal cavitations. This is the first book of it's kind to include root canal and wisdom teeth cavitations along with mecury fillings. I believe this new technology is the answer to many peoples prayers. If you have an ailment and can't find a cause, read this book I did and it sure saved my life. After reading this book and battling cancer for two years, I understood what had gone wrong with my body. I decided to have my mercury fillings out and wisdom teeth cavitations cleaned out. I am now cancer free. Yes I said it CANCER free. It took only six weeks for my cancer to disappear. I would never have believed it if it didn't happen to me. Read this book and you too can learn what I learned too. Thank You! Morton Walker for writing a well researched and documented book. B. Phillips

A Spillage of Mercury

witty, charming and erotic
One of the most exciting books I have read in 1996 Neil Rollinson is witty and erotic in his verse

You won't be able to put this book down.
This is the first book of poetry that I've read from cover to cover in one sitting. And then reread several times. Each short poem is written in a beautiful, accessible style that really pulls in the reader. Various themes repeatedly pop up, including a number of poems on biblical characters written from their own point of view. The poems are sensual, but not lush, the writing, while not exactly spare, is never florid. Read it!

Good, but not quite the best
If this book had come out ten years ago, I would've given it an unqualified 5 stars & wished to give it even higher. It's a good effort on a difficult & widely overlooked subject.

So, with no wish to fault the author -- if you've got the book, then by all means apply it without hesitation -- but the one by Therese Francis is superior: briefer, tighter, & more directly applicable without falling into the sort of detailed analysis that a high-level astrologer is looking for. In short, Francis is a long-established astrologer, & is speaking from both her credentials & a desire to bring a complex subject to a wide audience in an immediately applicable manner. Francis even went on record mid-2000 predicting how the retrograde Mercury would directly impact the elections of that year, a truly remarkable feat demonstrating the occasional blunt applicability of astrology to the daily life of millions.

Blazing through Mercury Trials and Tribulations
Understanding Mercury Retrograde is important for all astrologers, because as we know, the phone starts to ring off the hook the day this pesky little planet goes backwards (from our perspective) in the sky! Since we are currently doomed to deal with this phenomenon 3 times a year, it pays to brush up on the meaning of Mercury Retrogrades and find as many positive ways to deal with it as possible. I think astrologers will find Chrissie's book particularly handy because it has tables in the back for quick reference and it tells each Sun Sign how to survive! You can even recommend it to your clients because it is so easy to navigate through and understand. It is demanding work to write about Mercury Retrograde and I think Chrissie has done a great job!

.

An Eagerly Awaited Book
There are forces of destiny in our lives that go beyond chance, like astrology. Everyone is affected by Mercury Retrograde. Chrissie Blaze gives us an effective and practical way of handling its disruptive influence, and even turning it into a gift. Infact, she shows us the Cosmic purpose of Mercury Retrograde - and how to utilize it to produce a happier, more fulfilling life. With the law of karma, one learns that what was once considered inevitable and fated, can infact be changed... and so too the influence of Mercury Retrograde. Chrissie writes with clarity and simplicity of an ancient science that has increasingly of late become all too complex and mathematical. This is a fun, practical, meaningful and eagerly awaited book!

There's mercury, mercury every where...
A great book written by two very intelligent and "open minded" doctors. Dr. Thomas Levy's story lead me to taking a more pro-active position with my dental revision. I already knew about the devastating effects of my "silver fillings" and I had some knowledge about root canals. However, his story took me to the next level of action...removal of my two root canals. And yes, just like Dr. Huggins and Dr. Levy mention in the book, they were infected and a source of slow and constant poisoning of my body. I owe the a debt of graditute for their courage to speak out about yet another atrosity in dentistry.

They also go into detail about many other sources of mercury...eye contact lens solution, contraceptives, vaccines, seafood, etc.

If you want to know why we are getting sicker and sicker in this country, then you need to read this book.

Timely Aid
I was fortunate to read this book before undergoing removal of root-filled teeth and amalgam fillings. My dentist had recommended an implant to replace an extracted root-filled tooth. This book points out the danger of such an immune system challenge (I chose a bridge of biocompatible materials instead) and provides further updates to It's All in Your Head. Especially helpful are the sections on root canals, cavitations and detoxification.

Eye opening
Something I did not know (and which the authors expose) is that dentists as a professsion have the highest suicide rate. It is because, they argue convincingly, dentists spend decades dealing with mercury, a deadly neuro-toxin, which collects in their brains. Although they don't comment on it, this is where the old expression, "Mad as a hatter" came from: in the past hatters became insane because they used mercury in their job. The average dental amalgam is 50% mercury: this is the poison the ADA claims is safe and allows dentists to place inches from peoples' brains? Europe is far ahead of us in this regard; mercury fillings are now illegal. The list of diseases improved or cured by removal of fillings is astonishing. The authors list case after case. Schopenhauer made the comment that ideas are first ridiculed, then violently opposed, then accepted as self-evident. I wonder how many years it will take before the dangers of these fillings will be accepted as self-evident.

Amalgam Illness, Diagnosis and Treatment : What You Can Do to Get Better, How Your Doctor Can Help
Published in Paperback by Minerva Laboratories (21 June, 1999)
Author: Andrew Hall Cutler
Amazon base price: $35.00
Used price: $20.00
Average review score:

This is the book you need!
Andrew Cutler has written an exceptional and enlightening book on the devastating health affects caused by amalgam fillings in your teeth. No one ever speaks as knowingly as those with experience. The author, himself a victim of mercury poisoning and a respected research scientist offers a clear, concise description of the physical and neurological destruction mercury causes in the human body. Clearly explained in language the patient can understand, yet the book is medically and scientifically detailed enough to belong in every physician's library.

Do you know that dental amalgams - commonly referred to as silver fillings - are composed of 50% mercury? Despite what you may have been told, the mercury is not safely locked into the filling once it hardens. Mercury migrates from the tooth into your body and brain via several pathways, which are thoroughly explained in this book. If you have amalgam fillings in your teeth and find yourself plagued with a host of illnesses or symptoms your physician cannot resolve this book is a must read. Dr. Cutler has created a much needed and valuable resource for the victims of mercury poisoning. Finding a doctor knowledgeable on chronic mercury poisoning from amalgams is very difficult if not next to impossible. This book will arm you with the knowledge and information you need to make sure your doctor is following a protocol that will help you recover, rather than one that might harm your health even further.

This book will also enlighten the medical and dental professions; and of even more importance to you personally, it will put you on the path to recovering your health. As a recovering victim of mercury poisoning myself, I have read many books on this subject. Not having a background in medicine or biology some of them were next to impossible for me to wade through as I searched for a cause of my illness; Dr. Cutler's book is straightforward and to the point. Some books were easy to understand, but did not offer the depth of scientific information presented by Dr. Cutler. I am deeply indebted to Dr. Cutler for providing such a candid, well researched, enlightening, and thoroughly comprehensive resource. I have had the pleasure of referring this book to many other victims of this most preventable illness; all agree this book is the most helpful resource available.

My doctor was so impressed with this book she ordered it before I left her office. Doctors are as much in the dark about this illness as are we, the victims of chronic mercury poisoning. This book is a real eye opener and will save you years of trudging from doctor to doctor as I did in search of the cause of my failing health. When all the while the cause of my illness was truly just beneath my nose. If you have amalgam fillings in your teeth and are plagued with chronic health problems you will find the solution in the scientific research and unriddling answers found in this book. Mr. Cutler has definitively revealed the mystery behind a host of illnesses caused by amalgam, along with invaluable knowledge on how you can recover.

In gratitude for this great men all remind us

We can make our lives sublime,

And, departing leave behind us

Footprints on the sands of time.

Andrew Cutler left one giant footprint in his stride, offering help and hope to those of us suffering the devastating effects of chronic mercury poisoning. Thank you for this book, Andy.

"Amalgam Illness" saves your money, health... and your life.
"Amalgam Illness: Diagnosis and Treatment" by Andrew Hall Cutler, PhD, PE

This book is indispensable. Within it lies crucial medical information that can prevent people exposed to toxic heavy metals from sliding inexorably into premature disability and death.

Cutler doesn't just say WHAT will fix a problem, he also explains the biochemical reasons WHY the problem started. He facilitates the paradigm shift a reader must assimilate in order to restore autonomy over their healthcare decisions. No physician has ever provided me with so much scientific explanation for illness, and no amount of my own research could match Cutler's knowledge and experience as a chemist.

Reading "Amalgam Illness" gave me that climactic "aha!" moment -- the realization and relief that finally I had the answer to a variety of multigenerational chronic physical and mental health issues. All of my seven middle-aged siblings with mercury dental fillings have at least one ailment mentioned in Cutler's book; my mother with dentures has none.

My 5-year-old son has mercury poisoning; this diagnosis was missed by his neurologist and pediatrician. I would never have tested for mercury were it not for Andrew Hall Cutler's advocacy on the Yahoo! Autism-Mercury listserv. Now with medical treatment my son's teachers say next year he will no longer attend a special education class. I eagerly await his next book, "How To Interpret A Hair Test."

"Amalgam Illness" necessarily covers a wide range of subject matter, stepping through the kinetics of biochemistry involving heavy metals, hormones, the Krebs cycle, amino and fatty acids, liver, adrenals, etc. Consumers will appreciate learning how proper nutrition and chelation can reduce and/or eliminate dependence on expensive prescription medications that merely mask symptoms.

As a medical and chemistry primer aimed a varied target audience, Cutler's writing style deftly balances professional distance with touches of humor, dry wit and social commentary. The technical terminology may prompt a below-average reader to reach for the dictionary.

One caveat: People suffering from mercury-induced "brain fog" would benefit from more checklists summarizing courses of treatment; however, if a patient is too disabled mentally to comprehend the material, s/he should bring the book to his/her personal physician. Given the massive amount of bioaccumulative mercury entering our environment each day from coal-fired power plant emissions, this book should sit atop the prescient doctor's desk next to the Physician's Desk Reference.

The book's spare look would benefit from a graphic designer. However where one's health is concerned, substance must trump style. Thousands of glossy paperbacks with inflammatory headlines and anecdotes about New-Age fads promise rejuvenation, but "Amalgam Illness" by Andrew Hall Cutler is one of the few treatment books that actually delivers.

Amalgam Illness - a review
Amalgam Illness explained to me what many doctors were unable to about my failing health. These doctors had failed me miserably with only a grim diagnosis and no cause or cure.

Andy Cutler's book convinced me of something I had suspected: that my silver amalgams in my mouth were making me sick. His description of symptoms of mercury toxicity are thorough and were overwhelmingly familiar to me. His understanding of this devastating condition could only be this clear to someone who has lived this nightmare. With his knowledge of body chemistry, he is able to tell the reader how to diagnose a mercury problem and what to do to get well.

After 15 years of chronic pain and illness, I now have the information I need to be proactive in getting well. I have recently had all the amalgam from my teeth safely removed. I have already seen improvements in several areas concerning my health. These improvements have come without even beginning the detox procedure. I know that I will see more improvements as I begin that process.

This book has put my body and brain back on the road to good health.
