Great personal book for keeping your lifestyle in check.
There are so many books on diet, health, and nutrition, finding something that specifically applies to you seems impossible. After reading the Pocket Guide to Ayurvedic Healing, I am for the first time getting a handle on my health. This book provides an easy to understand (with everyday examples) wholistic approach to the "science of life." I was amazed at how easy it was to follow. Once you find out your unique constitution, found by taking a 20-question test, you can quickly determine what your basic requirements are for optimal health.

Keeping the balance is the name of the game. The author gives you plenty of ideas and resources for keeping your lifestyle in check. Although the principles were derived from India, the author has translated these ancient principles into contemporary times with herbs and foods that you can easily find in your health food store.

After carrying this little pocket book around for a short time for quick reference, I suddenly knew how to take care of my health. My friends call me Doc now. I highly recommend this book for anyone trying to stay healthy in these crazy times.

Great for classical study, could use an update
This is a greta reference book for poets and lit students/teachers, though its focus is mainly classical styles. It covers great territory when it hits the rarely-used forms (eclogue, epistrophe), but falls short on history. Since it's a bok of devices, however, you're going to want to look for poetry history somewhere else. Has TONS of examples of entries, which is invaluable for the poet wanting to branch into other forms and methods, and a nice launching pad for teachers looking to challenge students outside of ABABAB.

The Amazing, Unbelievable Ripley's
Ripley's Believe It or Not is a great bok. It contains many interesting facts, which will leave you in shock and disbelief. I thought Ripley's Believe It or Not was awesome. I had a lot of fun reading the book and I learned many amazing facts. Based on the T.V hit show, Ripley's Believe It or Not is mind-boggeling. Many people think that it is the same as Guiness Book of Records, but it is not. Ripley's Believe It or Not tells you amazing facts and you decide whether it is true or not. None of the facts in Ripley's are in the Guiness Book of Records.

Dated, but interesting
I was not entirely startled by how important a role class played in the 50s (two decades before my birth) but this was eye-opening in some ways - it seems that status played a larger role in peoples' lives then. Packard does a wonderful job of documenting all of this and it is certainly more interesting than your average sociological research book. Some of it is quite dated, some is still relevant, but overall it presents a good look at how life was 40 years ago. Recommended, if you can track down a copy.

A classic of the genre
Packard is almost at his best in this tale of subterrenean adventure. He utilises his imagination (always his best asset as a writer) and ties in characters from other Packard books. This device, in particular, helps the reader think there's some continuity here, some sense of belonging to the Packard family.

We come across all manner of wonderful beasts and baddies (and the odd symbolistic morality tale) down below the Bottomless Crevasse, in what is probably Packard's greatest work outside of 'Hyperspace'.

World's Weirdest Critters
This is a fun book filled with amazing animals. For example I like the furry frog. It can't get much weirder than that! The book tells a lot about the animal you read about and it has pictures of the animal too. I think you would like this book.

a physical approach
The author presents vision improvement in a way that likens relaxed use of the eyes to other forms of fitness that keep the body, or various aspects of it, working smoothly and efficiently. The material isn't strictly the Bates Method, but it's basically in line with it, with some things added that some Bates teachers may not agree with. The book goes over why glasses are not the solution, then it gets into specific exercises that are to help refractive errors.

Your eyes are important; it pays to keep them in shape!
Despite all the emphasis today on healthy lifestyles and physical fitness, I can't recall seeing any other recent book that has advocated applying those same principles to a person's eyes. As Ms. Roy points out in "Eyerobics", the eyes contain muscles that need a good workout, too, in order to stay strong and limber. Many years ago, as a teenager, I struggled with the fact that I was nearsighted and had no choice but to wear the heavy "nerdy-looking" glasses that were available back in the 50's. I was intrigued when I found a paperback book that described a variety of exercises that one could perform in order to improve vision. The book seemed to be based on sound principles, but unfortunately, it treated eye exercises as if they were the "calisthentics" that were so popular in those days: something boring and uncomfortable that was "good for you". The book sat on a shelf for years, filled with good ideas that never became a reality. I eventually learned of the newly-available contact lens, and was able to take advantage of this wonderful development to shed my glasses for a while. However, at some point the discomfort of contact with smoke and dust overcame my vanity, and I decided that a pair of lightweight, wire-rim glasses was really not so bad. Now, as I approach the big "50", I have found that I have a new challenge, one that we all face eventually: the tendency to have difficulty with close work when wearing my regular glasses. I have tried using the latest version of "bi-focals", and I find a lot of disadvantages. I believe that with a little work, I can improve my close vision so that the single-vision lenses will be sufficient. I may decide at some point to undergo laser vision correction for cosmetic reasons, but I know that the close-vision issue will remain unless I develop healthy, flexible eye muscles. I have found "Eyerobics" to be a source of inspiration and a kind of "owner's manual for the eyes". The exercises are designed to fit into today's busy schedules, and seem to be more like an interesting little games than like "calisthentics". Marilyn Roy has brought some important eye-care issues to the attention of the general public in a readable, down-to-earth book. Perhaps it should be made into a "Dummies" book, because it deserves to be just as popular.

Don't let the Doctor's review fool you, it works
If you're looking for a book with eye EXERCISES that was written by someone with curiosity who EXPERIMENTED and STUDIED at the same time to improve their vision, with advice that may help you, you've found it. I used to be in eye therapy at the Alderwood Vision Clinic in WA, I know these exercises work and I know that without daily exercises... your vision will tend towards what you mainly look at. I was nearsighted, then eventually didn't need glasses thanks to the vision therapy, then I played video games for 3 years as well as computer games and gradually got worse.

The only exercise I miss from the book is "eccentric circles", I believe they have a version using squares. Looks kinda like
[ []] [[] ] and you have to make them look like one square or 3 squares by focusing in, then focusing away. (using a window helps).

I believe the internet lacks resources for vision therapy...

One more tip: Take your most nearsighted eye, and with your finger, pull the skin on the outer side back. It will make your vision blurrier, but focus it right and you'll get 20/20 vision or better temporarily. Took me some time... the theory behind it is that I have a muscle there that got used to focusing in, so I focused it out. There's also the factor of making the eye round again because muscle strain made it oval-shaped. Either way, it deals with your muscles... (also, think about what squinting does... relate it to the above).

Unfortunately you do have to work for better vision. Remember to rest your eyes every now and then. But, doctor$ do exi$t and if you'd like to give them your ca$h you can always believe their "expert" review$, which I'm sure are more ba$ed on your benefit than their profit. Be careful. And do what works for you.

This book is an excellent start, and much cheaper than eye therapy. I do believe it will correct your vision a noticeable amount within a year if you keep at it... might fix it totally within 2.

Great book!
It's great to finally have an authoritative book available that covers scanners so completely. I liked that the book provided information for users of any brand scanner, rather than just Hewlett Packard equipment. Scanner models change so frequently anyway that advice on how to select and use the best one for your needs is more valuable than a feature-by-feature comparison of specific scanners. This book has just what I needed, without being padded out with how-tos you can find in any Photoshop book. The projects were great, too. I'm on my third scanner, and was delighted to see suggestions for interesting things to do with it. Good job, authors!

Great information! I love this book!
I wish I'd had this book when I started using my scanner. It clearly explains a lot of confusing terms and helped me correct a lot of the things I was doing wrong. The chapter that explained resolution was worth the price I paid all by itself. I disagree with the reviewer who says the book is a rehash of the material supplied with scanners. Half of this book consists of projects to apply to your scanning, something that I wish more vendors *would* provide with their products. The other half is detailed information about scanning that I wish had been supplied with my scanner. If I want a book on image editing with Photoshop, I'll buy one. I wanted a book on how scanners work and how to use them, and that's what the authors have done a good job in writing this handbook. Thanks!

Still a great book on scanning!
I'm always amazed when people buy a great book on scanning, like this one, then complain because it doesn't have detailed information on their particular scanner or lots of chapters telling them how to use Photoshop. If you want a Photoshop book, buy a Photoshop book! There are hundreds of them. If you want to know how to use the controls of your scanner, read the manual!

This book is the best general guide to scanning that I've seen, with lots of information on how scanners work, how to choose the best resolution, and how to get the best scans, and other essential information. Then, the last half of the book shows you lots of fun things you can do with a scanner, with a nice collection of easy projects. I recommend this book for beginners who want to understand scanning, and more advanced users who want a little more depth of coverage and a resource of ideas and applications. Good job, authors!
