Short as the title implies
The plot of the story is simple, you find an bottle near the lake and either you or your dog gets shrunk. In a shrunken state you must try to stop your shrinkng or escape home. You'll find yourself dealing with giant animals such as hornets and frogs. If your dog is shrunk you'll have to find a way to grow him back or maybe just leave him that way. It's a really short book with great illustrations. Definately a book for younger readers.

Illustrated Packard Buyer's Guide: All Packard Cars and Commercial Vehicles, 1899 to 1958 (Motorbooks International Illustrated Buyer's Guide Series)
Published in Paperback by Motorbooks International (January, 1992)
Author: Richard M. Langworth
Amazon base price: $17.95
Collectible price: $66.00
Average review score:

Weak with an over-inflated title
Despite the title, the book actually does not cover "all" Packard products. In fact, it's very weak on commercial and professional vehicles, with very few photographs or useful information. The author has done a good job on the common models and the desirable models (like convertibles), but glosses over much of the "custom", commercial, and professional cars manufactured by Packard. If you are seriously looking to buy a Packard, consider this as a starting point, but do not rely upon it for prices, availability, or attempt to use it as an authoritative reference. You'll find that, in the marketplace, Packard automobiles are hard to locate in the concours condition priced in the book, cost more, and more common models range widely from descriptions due to customization by owners over the last 40-70 years.

Journey to the Year 3000

"Super" isnt' the word for it.
Though the book claims to be a "Super Adventure" don't believe it, this book is just another "Choose Your Own Adventure" story. Volunteering to go through an experement where you are put to sleep for 1000 years you find that earth has been taken over by a tyrant. Fortunately, Venus and Mars are inhabitable and still reasonably free. Your mission is either to just survive or, if you're feeling adventurous to stop this tyrant once and for all! The one thing about this book that is different from all others that I've read is that there is only ONE ending that says you defeat the tyrant, there are a few ways to get there but they're almost the same.

Entertaining for kids
I was disappointed in this book. its a small book, with cartoon like drawings and a few color photos in the center of the book. I truly didnt know it was written for kids[ comes with a couple of funtime quizes]. Its not a horrible book, just not great for an adult.

Packard
Published in Hardcover by Motorbooks International (October, 1998)
Authors: Dennis Adler and Dennis Alder
Amazon base price: $39.95

Disappointing!
Coverage limited primarily to certain "clasic" senior models, ignoring the vast majority of both pre- and post-war models. Beautiful photographs make the book one for the coffee table.

Sea-Trading

Author: William V. Packard

Sea-Trading Vol 1 - The Ships
While not having viewed the entire series of three volumes, The Ships stands as a very good introduction to the types of commercial merchant ships of the day. Now out of print, there is much to be updated. The new shipbroker or charterer may get some good points of insight to the industry from this work, but the experienced one probably won't derive much anew.

You Are a Shark
Published in Paperback by Bantam Books (June, 1985)
Author: Edward Packard
Amazon base price: $1.95
Used price: $1.50
Collectible price: $3.18

Name is decieving
While the book is called "You are a Shark" that is only one of thie things you become in this story. By entering a forbidden temple you have angered some ancient force which decides that you must no longer have your human life. Therefore you are transformed into several different animals. Every now and then you may change from one animal to another without your choosing and others you return to the temple and you can have slight control over what you become next. It's a good story for those that have ever wanted to be something else or just like reading up about animals.

And for a bit of trivia, Packard made a mistake! One of your incarnations is that of a mosquito. It claims that you are enjoying a meal of blood but mosquitos don't eat blood! They eat nectar from flowers, blood is only consumed by the females so that they can lay their eggs.

don't waste your time
I needed a book on SCM so bad to understand it and start me with CMM. I browsed that book for about an hour and I returned it, I even felt bad making my company pay for it.

A good handbook for the single developer
If you are thinking of buying this book, you're probably concerned with some of those the extremely negative reviews it has. I was concerned too, but something made me feel that I shouldn't take those reviews too seriously, so I ordered it. I'm glad I did so.

This is a simple, straight to the point book aimed at the single developer (or small team), without any kind of theoretical discussions, just some basic explanations and simple rules of thumb.

IMHO, the authors of those harsh reviews are SCM managers that were looking for more complex and advanced books.

If you are a developer, you probably consider SCM as tool to make your programming life easier (and not a science or way of life) and you will probably consider this book a good introduction.

If you are looking for some convoluted theoretical mental masturbations on SCM, you should certainly skip it.

Excellent book...exactly what it's subtitle states
I object to the unnecessarily harsh review being given to these authors for their excellent work.

Read the subtitle: "The Latenight Developer's Handbook"

In case you missed it, the authors state it again, on page xvi:

"The book does not discuss theoretical aspects of configuragtion management because we think that inaccessibility has been on of the barriers for broader use of configuration management."

Precisely.

Years of experience? Combined, the authors have over 38 years of practice and MANAGEMENT experience.

And I object to the presumption that it should be used only by small-project teams. This book is listed by the W3C for use by their developers, which is one of the largest collaboration efforts in history.

If you're looking for a textbook with which to teach a class, you may still want to consider whether you want to present "Big Science" configuration management to your students right away. Don't you have an obligation to prepare them with the survival skills they need in industry, before moving on to other topics you personally find more interesting?

These authors deserve better, with their multi-decade experience in bringing software products through the release cycle to the general marketplace, which are even now in day-to-day use by many organizations both large and small.

Put a cover on this book; you're going to wear it out referring to it with your colleagues.

A Methodology for Developing & Deploying Internet & Intranet Solutions

Shallow, disappointing and frustrating
This book had the potential to be great. Instead it falls short of the mark by a wide margin.

Although the book provides a sound framework for developing and deploying solutions, it has a major flaw. Throughout the author raises interesting issues in the form of rhetorical questions, then ... nothing. Quite disapponting. Had the questions been followed by solutions or recommendations, then the book would have both substance and value. Substance by stepping up and providing viable answers and solutions to problems faced when developing and implementing internet solutions. Value by saving us from having to discover the answers on our own, wasting resources along the way.

The whole point of buying a book such as this is to benefit from lessons learned. It is frustrating to realize that the book could have been a valuable resource had the author only taken the time to provide answers to the very questions he raised.

Finally a "How-To" book that doesn't read like a textbook!
Finally a "How-To" book that doesn't read like a textbook! Some of us are convinecd that "technology" projects fail half the time not because "senior management is not supportive", or "the users didn't take it seriously", but rather because the first-time (or second-time)project manager has never done anything like this before. Beginning project managers require training... Why is it that project managers that fail (and live) are more apt to succeed the next time....they learned from their mistakes. Most project management books or courses for technology projects are real sleepers. The authors usually want us to be impressed by their knowledge. Finally, somebody gets it! This book is an entertaining story about an actual project team that overcomes real challanges to succeed. In the process of making the correct decisions, you learn why they do what they do. Although it does drag at times, it's a good read and after years of successful project implementations and company mergers, I highly recommend this book for beginning as well as experienced managers. Well worth the time.

Humerous but thought-provoking overview with great breadth
A great read for new project managers, or project managers who have never dealt with deployment. It touched on quite a number of topics I hadn't experienced, some I hadn't considered, and did it with a light, pleasant read instead of a fall-asleep-after-five-pages approach you'd expect.

Not for beginner or office application. Too technical
If you are using scanner solely for pictures and/or graphics, this book may be helpful. There is very little information for office application such as scanning documents and placing in Microsoft Word. Too technical for a beginner.

This book is useful for junior engineer of scanner maker.
If you are junior engineer or marketing people of scanner maker, YES, this is the book you want.

This is not an ABC book. It is not an advacned, either. You need some technical background to read this book. If you want to buy a scanner or learn how to use scanner, try others.

From chapter 1 to 10, it focus on the product definition. It telds you what kind of scanner should be made for current market. From chapter 11, there are basic theory about scanner and how to tell the image quality.

Too few pictures in this book. Some phenomena is hard to descipt.
