Designing Courses and Obstacles
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin Company (September, 1978)
Authors: Pamela Carruthers, John H. Fritz, and Christine Jones
Amazon base price: $11.95
Used price: $10.09

Good advice from a great course designer.
Pamela Carruthers was a fine rider in her heyday, and a superb course designer in her later years. She designed grand prix jumping courses at all the major show jumping events around the world. I had the privelege of listening to her describe her rationale for some great courses. The first fence is a gift to the horse and rider to get them in the right frame of mind. A course should be challenging enough to weed out the field, but not kill or maim them. She used changes of direction, half-stride approaches, and obstacle types to good effect, without having to use super huge fences, though hers were often big, to be sure. This book covers the ground for the beginning to advanced designer. I used this book as my bible when I was doing this in the 1980s at small shows. The rationale behind her layouts is very sound.

Ryan's reveiw
I think this is a good magazine, it gives in depth reports on all the riders it can also hook you up with alot of gear. It also has a great picture selection and they get great photo graphs. The only thing wrong with this magazine is that it is not long enough. It is to short they need to put more pictures and Reviews. If you like dirt bikes than subscribe to this magazine. Or even if you just like the pictures they have a great selection.

A Distance of Ground: A Western Story (Five Star Standard Print Western Series)

Well written novel with a complex plot.
For twenty years Buck Clegg has been racing horses. But he's had to give up the saddle and is now a jockey's agent. His old friend Charlie Vann contacts him because his finest horse, Jim Ned, has been stolen. Despite Buck's protests that he is no detective, Vann insists on his help. The thieves want money, but they may have no intention of returning Jim Ned -- as Buck and Charlie find out when they nearly get killed trying to deliver the ransom. As the search becomes desperate, Buck discovers that his ex-wife may somehow be involved. The situation deteriorates when the horse thieves apparently find another way to dispose of Jim Ned, and for a lot more money than Charlie Vann can pay! A Distance Of Ground is a terrific, well written novel with a complex plot that engages the reader's full attention from first page to last.

The Dogs: A Personal History of Greyhound Racing
Published in Paperback by Chatto & Windus (October, 1994)
Author: Laura Thompson
Amazon base price: $22.95

Give The Dogs five bones - !
This is not just a history of greyhound racing, it is a deeply moving personal insight into Laura Thompson, her love for dogs and her love for the father who owned and raced them. The book is Fever Pitch with heart; I wept buckets reading the damn thing. It is full of compassion for the greyhounds who run in the name of business and sport, and full of guilt for the fact that they give so much pleasure while being used, all too often, as playthings. It is also a journey into a completely separate world of which I hitherto knew nothing, and which came wonderfully alive for me. I found this book by accident in a second hand shop and couldn't help myself from wanting to say something about it - it is really beautiful.

If you're a funny car enthusiast, get this book
This book is a pictorial, with ample captions. It carries you through from early 1970 through the end of the decade, with an emphasis on '70 through about '74. Most of the famous cars here, plus some obscure ones. Some of the photos were taken by non-professional fans, but are good nonetheless. A good assortment of pit shots and on-track action, mostly burnouts. A visual history of a simpler era in full-bodied drag racing.

Priceless reviews of drivers that have come and gone.
Though it took me a few months to have this book sent to me, it was well worth the wait. I found it informative and very correct. I am using the book for research and it has proven to be an extremelly important tool. Reading the history of the drivers from and era gone, it is interesting to note how close these drivers profiles match racing drivers of the decade that we are now in. I keep this book on my priority shelf.

The fabulous Porsche 917

Porsche 917
This is the first automobile racing book that I ever bought, some thirty years ago. Lots of great black and white photos and large line drawings. A good history of Porsche's attempt to build a racing machine that would win at Le Mans. The first edition covers Porsche's turbo engine and aerodynamics, and the second half of the book give the racing history (race by race) of the 917. The revised second printing adds Porsche's Can-Am championship seasons of George Follmer and Mark Donahue. A quick read that chronicles the greatest days of prototype sports car racing.
