Well-researched book about one of 20th century's best
Wonderful book, with a great deal of information about this horse's career, based on interviews with people connected with him. Recaptures the vintage years 1966-1968 of racing, and brings to life memorable moments in this top thoroughbred's career. Hopefully, there will also be books about other racing stars of this era, Damascus and Buckpasser, who also were memorable performers.

Iron Horse of Racing
When you read this book and see how much Dr Fager accomplisheed in his career, you have to marvel at this horse.

While everyone points to Secretariat as the greatest os all time, I bet Dr Fager would have give him a run for his money ESPECIALLY if they ran in a sprint race(a race uner 1 mile).

The single most amazing record Dr Fager held was his 1:20, 7 Furlong time. Its not just the time, look at the weight he carried ! Most horses would have collapsed or pulled up in distress, but the Dr kept on rolling strong.

Steve Haskin did another noteworthy job on this one and it deserves to be in your Library.

Outstanding Book on One of Racing's Greats
This book is the second in the BLOOD HORSE series on racing legends. It does not disappoint. It is a marvelous biography about one of the all-time great racehorses. Dr. Fager was one of the fastest racehorses to have ever lived. His one-mile record stood for nearly 30 years, but he was much more than a mere sprinter. What was even more incredible about the horse was the fact he carried a tremendous amount of weight and STILL was able to run so fast. He ran against some of the all-time racing greats including Damascus and Buckpasser. Yet, as Haskin points out, Dr. Fager was very fragile and had a tendency to get colic. (The horse ultimately died of a ruptured stomach at the age of only 12.)

Haskin does a great job describing Dr. Fager's most important races. His descriptions are the next best thing to having seen the races themselves.

I highly recommend this book and all of the others in the series.

A Personal Review
One of your previous reviewers indicated, after seeing this book, that Barbara must eat, drink and sleep Thoroughbreds, or words to that effect. I know Barbara, and that writer had it right. No one I've ever met loves Thoroughbreds like she does and her love is evident in every outstanding photo that appears in her book. She even baked Spectacular Bid a birthday cake [a photo of him eating it appeared in The Blood Horse magazine!] I collect Thoroughbred books and this is one of the very best. I would have this opinion even if I didn't know Barbara. Because I do know her, I know why her love of the Thoroughbred shines through in each and every photo.

It captures what I love about horses
This brilliant photographer must spend every daylight hour at the racetrack or at the many beautiful thoroughbred farms that are pictured in this book. She captures all of the wonderful things that make us love the thoroughbred racehorse.

Beautiful!!
While photographs of my favorite horses, Cigar and Skip Away, appear in this book, I like the shots taken on the backsides at racetracks even more than the images of famous racehorses. Barbara Livingston's work is great art, her photographs evoke the warm, fuzzy feeling I get when I'm around a racehorse.

Driver/Crew Chief details
I chose a group of books for researh for starting a race team, this was one... If you want detail, this has it, but let me warn... I feel there is too much time spent on the driver/crew chief talks during warm-up/qualifying/race. If you want to learn what goes on between the two this book is for you. The nitty gritty detail of a year in racing is, in my opinion, a bit lacking, but the detail of what goes on between the driver and crew chief is terrific. Haney gets a bit lenghty in the middle races of the season, he found a tape recorder, but rounds out the book back on the brief... while I enjoyed reading the details of weight jacking and spring adjustments, I found too much "car adjustment" detail and not enough "a year in the life of..." details.

A feast for car racing nuts.
Paul arranged the year we'd all love to have: traveling with a top-line CART team and listening in to all their radio traffic on race weekends. He combines a talent for explaining technical issues with painstaking note-taking (the part of the year we didn't have to worry about) and presents it all with a fresh, self-effacing style.

The bulk of the book is Paul's description of how engineers and drivers set up the PacWest cars. We can listen in as they drift in and out of the right setup, struggling to find the right combination in this hugely competitive racing series.

Buy it if you're fascinated by the technical part of Champ Car racing. Stay away if you're looking for brisk narrative about people or a tight dramatic structure. This is hardcore racing.

If you're an auto racing fan, buy this book!
This is the book I've always wanted to read. I've been a fan of auto racing for many years, but no book has ever given a real "behind the scenes" look at what goes on in a top line race team. Haney's style is very readable and gives a good honest potrayal of all the key members of the race team. None better!

The Awesome Trail bikes by Shane Harvel
The Trail Bikes is a really good book.If you are looking for a
dirt bike,or if your looking for how to ride one this is the
place for you go to.Believe me this is the place for you to
go to.GOOD LOOK

Good solid stuff.
Eric Gorr's book is a great help to all dirtbike owners. In addition to your bikes workshop manual it should cover absolutely EVERYTHING you will ever need to do to your bike.

The writing is good, it's organized and to the point. There are specific sections for all the major models.
This is one of the better tecnical books I own, and I highly recommend it.

Buy This Book!
If you're a motorcycle enthusiast and you like to work on your own bike, this is the book to have! It tells you just about anything you may ever have wanted to know about working on your bike and more importantly, how to set it up properly. It goes through everything step by step, but not in a dummies fashion. The writing is straightforward, entertaining and best of all fact filled. I would call this the bible of dirtbikes. Now that I have it, I don't leave home without it.

By the way, I don't know the author, I just bought the book because a professional mechanic I met on the trail told me about it.

good stuff
This is a great book primarily because, in addition to being one of the world's foremost handicappers, Beyer is also an excellent writer. He conveys the ups and downs, the exhilirating highs and crushing lows of the life of a horseplayer in the context of the narrative of his own life. Highly recommended!

Andy hits a home run again !
If your not familiar with how to pick winners at the horses, you need to read this book.

I have been in the business of picking winners on line for many years, and I would have to say that Andy has been an inspiration to me.

You need to know a little about the horses, but this book helps you identify many classic patterns and things to look for.

Another must have in your collection at home.

Thanks Andy !

Mrs. Lewis has made some wonderful pictures here!
Although I have the spanish version of this book purchased in my country (I was unable to buy it brand new over the net) I must say this is one of the best Porsche book in my collection. The book is huge and complicated to handle but once you put it on a table and see the wonderful pictures it has (never saw pictures that large indeed) you know Mrs. Lewis has a special gift to captivate the beauty of these cars. The text is interesting but basic and there's a lack of info about some models as noted by other reviewers. A good point is Auto Union reference.

Almost.......
The book is VERY large & is mostly beautiful pictures spanning the Porsche history of classics from the earliest models to the Boxster...a little disappointed that: once again, a Porsche book that focuses a little too much on the 911. No 924 anything? & very little to say about the classic 928! However, the pictures are beautiful & there is some great insight into the history of arguably the greatest sports car ever. You will pick this book up for years & reflect on the beauty.

The fine art of the sports car
Of the 35+ porsche related texts I own and collect this is one of my favorites. Excellent photos, quality printing and readable history on a wide variety of models.

Good, but could have been much better. . .
The only reason I didn't give this book a top rating is because the author, Bill Reynolds, for some unknown reason, excluded
BMW and Mercedes automobiles from his book. And, I can not imagine why??? What a shame! The book could have been a 10 if he'd only shown a few BMW and MB highlights!

beautiful,beautiful,beatiful
wow..this is 288 pages of wow. The best thing is the photography...it is absolutely beautiful...there is a car a page, and some great cars..thehe book is divided into..

Post war cars1945-1955 Turning up the wick 1956-1962 Mid Engines and more 1963-1973 Heads down for the fuel crisis 1974-1983 Resurgence 1983 onwards and goes from 1950 Ferrari 166 MM Barchetta to the 1996 Jaguar XK8.. this book is great for a husband and great for the car loving kid..so what are u waiting for???

Great Book for Sports Car Enthusiasts
Bill Reynolds' photography is stunning in this book. A variety of high performance cars is reviewed in relation to the time period they were produced, starting in 1945 and ending in 1996. Brief, yet detailed, descriptions cover many topics including a range from technical specifications to notable style designs on each car.

If you enjoy viewing beautiful cars or want to know what the engines can do, you should enjoy this book.

Another interesting point to the book is the comparison between the European market and the United States market for sports cars.

I highly recommend this book for your personal collection or as a gift.

Greyt Book
This book was very informative as well as beautiful. I just loved to glossy pages..but that isn't the point..hehe..well, The reason why I gave this book 4 stars is because it lacked as much health-troubleshooting pages as I would have liked, but otherwise, I liked the story in the beginning, the explanation to racing, I absolutely like how it didn't side with anti-racing activists..that gets on my nerves....and pictures of many products you might need on the way.

Informative and Entertaining
Carolyn Raeke captures the essence of greyhound uniqueness in this well written and well organized book. The photos are fabulous and especially moving is the story of Chloe and her transformation from an exploited animal to a loved member of a family.

Beautiful book!
I borrowed this book from a friend and after reading (and re-reading) its beautiful pages I was convinced I needed to adopt a greyhound. This book was very informative and the pictures just make you fall for these wonderful animals! I recommend the book to anyone wanting to find out more about greyhounds and to see if they would be right for your home.

Worth it
A little bit American, but even so, an excellent first step towards understanding airflow effects.

As an F1 aerodynamicist myself I would encourage purchase of this book, informative and easy to read. Slightly outdated and simplistic but still relevant.

Good introductory book
If you've never taken a fluids course or are not a racing fan, this book will be a good introduction for both. It's not anywhere nearly as technical as his other books ("Low-Speed Aerodynamics" is arguably the standard in inviscid flows and on the shelf of most aero/fluids grad student), thankfully.

VERY basic on fluid mechanics/dynamics and scrapes the surface on racecar aerodynamics, but almost everybody in our wind tunnel (Langley Full Scale Tunnel) has a copy!

verry good aerodinamics book
Just verry professional helped me a great deal designing diffusers for BMW M3's

Excellent instruction
I've been competing in time trial events for about a year now, and bought this book to improve my driving. I found the information on how to drive faster extremely useful, and several ideas were introduced to me that I had not thought of before. The chapter on evaluating the course as a whole was also very useful and taught me how to evaluate a track - to know which sections are the most crucial. The discussion of suspension and car setup is good, but another reference will probably be needed for the serious chassis tuner.

I gave the book 4 stars because there are several chapters devoted to the process of autocrossing and time trialing (e.g. signing in, scutineering, etc) which I found less useful as it is something one picks up at your very first event anyway.

excellent for starters, good for review
This book is good for all. It is easy to understand, goes over basics, goes over the more detailed stuff. As a novice to autocrossing, I found it very helpful to learn all the basics in one book. Anything anyone has told you about the basics out on the track has been listed here. Not a substitute for track time, and some of the autocross wizards have pearls but they might be jumping over the basics. An excellent read.

Wonderful book for any autocrosser!
I highly recommend this book if you have any intention of being competitive in autocross driving. In fact, I would recommend it even for casual racers. Tons of great information on driving technique, the fast line, tire adhesion, preparation of the car and driver, and more. This book should be required reading for anyone who wants to drive fast.
