A great coming of age story.
I first read this book about 20 years ago. I recently found it and re-read it. I'm keeping it in my sons room for when he's old enough to read. It's a great story that teaches right from wrong, good versus evil, and about life and death. It does contain a couple hunting sequences.

A wonderful book..
This book is for children of all ages..parents who are children and grandparents who are also children. If you are not a resident of Montana, take the trip to the "BIG SKY COUNTRY", travel the roads and see where the story began and where it finished. It will be worth you time.

This book is a classic
A story of a teenager growing up in Great Falls Montana who comes across an abandoned greyhound and his companion cagey male Canadian Goose. The story is hilarious, especially at the end where the dog catches the rabbit at the racetrack, and rips it to shreds (during a race) and the goose manages to create chaos with the other dogs. The greyhound inspires the teenager to train hard as a track star. I enjoyed the book immensely.

Motor Cyclist Magazine Review
The February issue of Motor Cyclist Magazine reviewd this book and rated it very highly (that is where I learned about it and will order one). I have always loved Guzzi's and the last line in the review says "Be careful of this book; it can make you want a Moto Guzzi" - you will too!

Great over-all history
This is arguably the best book on Guzzis I have read.
The opinions are pretty objective and the author lets you know what HE would have bought, given the choice!
Lots of good pictures, sourced from around the world.
Ian Falloon tries not to miss-out any of the twins & even has a nice section on the little 4 valves.

I recommend this to any Guzzi enthusiast.

Long overdue
The credible and respectable work of Ian Falloon, both photographic and journalistic, is of extreme value in filling a huge gap ever-present in the MOTO GUZZI fanatic's English-published history library. He has taken aedquate time to properly research with sincerety his chosen subject first-hand and utilized the full range of world-wide resources available. A job well done, thank you, sir.

Rolling Thunder
DH audio has an interesting audio series, Rolling Thunder, regarding stock car racing in the 1960's. This four-volume audio series (White Lightning, Road to Daytona, Race to Glory, On to Talladega, (all three-hour abridgements) narrated by Michael Skinner, brings the listener right into the pit. These audios have an historical background and well as the fictional one in these tales.

Great stuff...especially the twist ending!
I have to admit I bought this book at a grocery store. The cover caught my attention and now I see there are others I have to order. Great, historically accurate book about racing. Surprised the publisher didn't make the author put in all the silly stuff most stories about NASCAR have. Or make them be negative about racing. Been a fan for thirty years and this is the way it is...good and bad!

Rolling Thunder: On To Talledega
I Think this book is a great sequal to the Rolling Thunder series. It depicts the action of a true racer, when Jodell is forced to let his cheif wrench in the cockpit of his car after a serios wreck at the new talledega track in Alabama. I find that the book follows history very well interluding a ficitional chacter with the likes of Richard Petty, David Pearson, Tiny Lund and other NASCAR legends. I would suggest this book to anyone who is interested in learning the roots of stock car racing to buy this book and any of the other Rolling Thunder books. I can't wait for #5 to come out.

Racing Driver: The Theory and Practice of Fast Driving

It's the Bible !
Whether you are a student of motorsport, or just interested in fast driving, this is quite simply THE reference book. It's the original, and the best.

Many will find DSJ's style somewhat dry and almost academic. Don't expect any laughs. But there is SO much valuable information packed into such a short volume, that it's solid value - no waffle ! From driver psychology (Jenks was first to coin the term "10/10ths") to vehicle dynamics at speed, all the essential knowledge is in here.

No race or rally driver worth his salt should ever step into the cockpit before reading this book.

Excellent book, teaching all aspects of high speed driving
This is an excellent book for learning the "finer" points of high speed driving. The techniques and approach to the subject apply to both racing and street driving. This is a great book to read first if you want to learn to drive better, or if you wish to read more about the subject, it is a great base to start from.

Describes how to drive fast safely.
Denis Jenkinson uses his motorcycle side-car racing experience and his work with Sterling Moss as his navigator during his record run in winning the 1955 Mille Miglia race in the Mercedes-Benz 300SLR to describe with practical examples how to drive fast safely. Sterling Moss ranks within the five most talented race car drivers of all time. Denis Jenkinson combines his sensitivity to the nuances of driving fast smoothly with his grounding in practical engineering and physics. He explains the dynamics of automobilies at speed, the need for concentration, acute vision, and situational awareness with practical experiences of driving fast on one thousand kilometers of two-lane Italian roads. This book is uniquely appropriate to learning the art of driving smoothly and quickly on public roads

New voices in contemporay and southern fiction
A nice collection of short stories from up-and-coming authors. If you are like me you enjoy discovering the new voices in fiction and that is what this collection offers. Good, solid story telling that is an interesting mix of southern genre and intriguing contemporay tales. Several stories I found particularly strong and mature, the kind that linger. If you appreciate short stories you will enjoy this book.

Rich as the Red Clay of Georgia
What a wonderful collection of new voices to represent the literary South. Faulkner and Williams would be proud.

Quirky, riviting book of the New South
found this to be a quirky but solid collection of the type that a friend of mine once dubbed "Southern Realism" because of its strange, dark and moving elements. Oh, yes, there's humor and lightness, but it's like the quote on the cover, which is what made me want to buy the book to begin with: "These folks all write like Archangels With Avenging Pens".
I read a lot of Southern Fiction and can't get enough of the "New South". It's exploratory and revealing and always entertaining, with characters you simply have to believe in because who could make them up? This book abounds in these qualities. There's a good variety here, too... the stories deal far outside what most people would think of when they think of The South, but which is, indeed, the South.

I have to admit that I was impressed with the litany of honors that these writers had won. I hadn't heard of most of them, so I guess there's a lot more going on in short story writing than even an avid short story reader like myself realizes. It's a good read, and if you have a leaning toward North Carolina writers as I do, you may end up wanting to add this to your collecton as I have, next to "Rough Road Home" and "Christ-Haunted Landscape" and "Best Stories from the South".

Riding for My Life
This is a heart-breaking story about a jockey who made her way to the top, only to nearly be killed when falling of during a race. I recomend this book for any reader.

Truly a GREAT book
I found this book while trying to get an interesting biography about a famous woman athlete for a project I had to do. Because I am fond of horses, it was my good luck that this autobiography of the famous jockey, Julie Krone, came up in my path. With the help of Nancy Ann Richardson, Julie Krone has been able to capture her younger years and early racing experiences and give them an interesting twist. Even when it turned out that I didn't need to do the project, I felt that the book had been a worthwhile investment. I greatly enjoyed it and highly recommend it for it's interesting and real-life quality.

Best Of The Best
This book is truly the best of the best. I've re-read it probably over seven times, yet I still get that feeling of astonishment at how Julie was able to become a racing hero. She went from the extreme bottom of horse racing to the top. After reading this book and watching her race. Julie is now my idle, my hero. She has inspired me to become a successful jockey. I, because of her, feel that I am going to be the first female jockey to win the triple crown. Everyone, remember my first name, Carly, for you'll be hearing of it a lot in a couple of years. Julie, I thank you and Nancy for writing such an extraordinary book, and for giving me the encouraggement through this book to live up to my full potential.

Sail Like a Champion

Well written, smooth reading but not advanced
I found the first chapter too egocentric: Dennis Conner explains that he is a good sailor, and that we have a lot to learn from him. The rest of the book is smooth reading and very well written. I had expected the book to be advanced, but the book seems to be very targeted at the beginner. Still, there is much useful information in the book.

In my mind, the book has four main parts: Part 1: boat design and building (including sails) is basic, but written in a way that makes it enjoyable to read. It is invaluable to anyone who without prior knowledge wants to buy a good boat. Part 2: boat handling and maneuvers is mainly for the novice. If you have been racing there is probably not much new here. Still the style of writing is good, and the checklists are easy to understand and follow. Part 3: strategy, is a good part. However, if you have attended a Smart Course by North Sails (or read their book) you will not find anything new here. Part 4: rules and tactics: Nothing really exciting here. The rules are old by now, and the tactics are the ones you learned in sailing school as a kid.

If you are about to enter your first boat, this is the book for you. However, if you have won a few Wednesday night club races you will probably ask for more advanced stuff than what you find in this book. A champion like Dennis Conner should be able to write a book that is much more advanced and thus more valuable than this book.

An advice from a legend...
Sailing like a champion is an excellent composed book. Each case is described using at least one of the author's real-life events and is written in a plain and uncomplicated way. But what fascinated me the most is not the theory of the sail trim (which is by all means one of the best) but the unmatched dedication of Dennis Conner and his unrivaled desire to win. Aa advice from a living legend..., Thank you DC!

A must for any sailors library.
Mr Connor explains everything a sailor needs to know to satisfy his/her desire to race or cruise to the best of his/her ability. He does it by also explaining the jargon that stiffles most books on the subject, making them hard to read or follow. Unless, of course, if you were born with a "silver tiller" in your hand.

Another good, engaging work!
Gilbert Morris continues to produce engaging works that entertain and challenge. In The Shadow Portrait, Morris mixes history, romance and the pursuit of artistic vision. While a bit formulaic (many fiction series are), I have enjoyed each and every book in the series and look forward to more!

Artistic, exciting, uplifting!
Continuing with my reviews of the series, I'd have to say this is a refreshing book. Gilbert takes two storylines and meshes them well together.

The year is 1907. Phil Winslow has recently returned from a tour of Europe and is restless. He goes home to the ranch in Montana but soon sets his sights on New York City, home of a great art institute. Through a stange turn of events, he becomes acquainted with the Lanier family. The oldest child, Cara, dabbles in paint herself, and is challenged by Phil to paint more than soulless flowers.

Peter Winslow is returning to New York City with his friends Easy Devlin and Jolie Devorak to compete in automobile races. He also meets a Lanier, in the form of oldest boy, Clinton. He soon gets caught up with wealthy socialite Avis Warwick and, against his friends' advice, allows the woman to ride in his car during a race. Tragedy strikes, leaving Peter with a load of guilt and Jolie with a burden of anger and jealousy.

Phil looks for a way to help the Lanier children break free from their father's grasp, but only when Clinton defends his sister's honor do the walls come crashing down.

An Artistic Book
I found this book to be as wonderful as the other House of Winslow books just as I had expected! I have enjoyed this series imensley and cannot wait for the next book. You will find it hard to set this book down once you start! Cara plans to stay in her room the rest of her life painting sad things, but Phil surpriseingly changes her mind. Will love bloom as well? Peter thinks Jolie is too young but she's fallen for him. They've been through so much together but she feels self-concise about her scar. Will he fall for another woman? Jolie finds herself soon having to care for the one Peter may love. Can she do it? To find out you have to read it! Happy reading!

Decent book
This one is ok, not one of the best, but not the worst either. It did have some decent tips and strategies for spotting an overlay and has been somewhat of a help to me in my handicapping.

Not too bad...
I thought the book was pretty good. Some good straightforward advice that is good to take with you to the track. No systems or guarantees, just common sense. The only drawback is that the analysis is using older formats of the Racing Form that doesn't include Beyers, and other newer things. The insight from the Mig, PG Johnson etc. was helpful.
