History of America's speedways : past & present
Published in Unknown Binding by Slideways Pubns ()
Amazon base price: $20.00
Average review score:

A must for oval track, dirt track, and race enthusiasts. The author has spent much of his life researching and visiting little known and well known race tracks in the US and Canada. Information goes back to the early part of the century. Some local tracks in Michigan are long gone with one track now converted to harness racing, which is Northville Downs. It would be nice if it was still a dirt track for midgets and jalopies, but with the upscale snoots living here, it would probably be history and converted to another upscale shopping mall. The author solicits information from any readers who may have knowledge of tracks long gone, and he periodically updates his book. Obviously, the book is for auto race enthusiasts who enjoy discussing nostalgia of cars and car racing. Interesting information is presented on old wooden race tracks. The book has lots of photos and information on local drivers and some who have earned big name reputations. The 20 bucks is well worth the enjoyment of just browsing through the book, let alone reading about your local tracks before you were just a dream in your parents minds.
The History of American Speedways Past & PresentFantastic Reference Book. It is a great place to start if you are an auto racing reference geek! (which I am).

How to Drive an Indy Race Car (Masters of Motion)

Wish I'd had this book when I was a kid!If you know a kid who's interested in racing, there's no better introduction to big-time motorsports than this book. It takes young readers (probably age 8 and up) inside the world of Champ Car racing, with thorough discussions of the drivers, cars, teams and events. When I was a kid, I had little concept of racing beyond the Indy 500, but a book like this would have added immensely to my understanding of the sport. The book's only shortcoming is that the information is somewhat dated now, but its young readers probably won't mind a bit.
Very Hepful!!!!!!!!This book helps you understand goes on in Indy Car racing. I recommed this book alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is really funny. This book is really funny. I am not even interested in car
races but I could still appreciate most of the humor in the
book. I suggest that anyone who likes good humor should
read this book.
Side splitting, truth telling bookThis book tells the truth about race fans. The author must be one himself or hang around them a lot to get the point of views seen in this book. I highly recomomend this book for anybody who has been to a race. It will make you laugh for hours.

Must-have book for any serious memorabilia collectorAll of Carl Hungness' Indianapolis 500 or Brickyard 400 yearbooks should be considered as must-have books for any serious memorabilia collector. These books are invaluable to my collection. The photgraphs are superb in all of the books.
Indianapolis 500 YearbooksThe Indianapolis 500 Yearbooks are a valuable addition to any Indianapolis 500 memorabilia collection. There are various authors such as Donald Davidson and Carl Hungness but all of the authors did an excellent job on these yearbooks. They should be in your collection too.

Wonderful!! Five Stars!!This book is excellant for all who are fans of the Derby. It is a great book, I couldn't put it down. It has great info. on the derby's history. Take time to read it!!!
For All Kentucky Derby FansThis book, one of five in a series, was written by the late, great Jim Bolus, "Mr. Kentucky Derby." He also frequently wrote articles in the annual Kentucky Derby souvenir magazine. Bolus knew EVERY conceivable bit of trivia about the race. He wrote about the horses, the history of the race, the people behind the scenes.
Included in this volume is a chapter on Affirmed and Alydar, a chapter on Col. Matt Winn, the man who made the Kentucky Derby what it is today, a chapter on black jockeys, a chapter on Ben Jones, and a wonderful chapter on the worst horses to run in the Derby.
EVERY fan should have this and the other four books.

A NASCAR Season through one driver's eyesIn Kyle Petty, Frye Gaillard has the most interesting driver on the NASCAR circuit, and he makes the most of it. This is a well-written, intelligent, and surprisingly candid recounting of a Winston Cup season. If you've ever wondered what the drivers say when the TV cameras are off, you should read this book - instead of the usual "I gotta thank Goodyear for puttin' an awesome set of tires under me...", you get lines like, "There was a little turd driving number fifteen that ran all over me." If you're a race fan, you'll love it.
Excellent-- an intimate look at the sport and its peopleGaillard skips the simple sensationalism that usually accompanies Nascar writings, choosing instead to tell a real story. He explores the history of the Nascar culture, the people that comprise it and the sport's surprising ability to get in your blood for good.

A Winner!Overall, I liked this book. The story of JR's early racing days and his travels with Jim McElreath as they followed the IMCA circuit was good reading. In addition, the details of his 1966 Eldora crash and recovery as well as his experience driving the Smokey Yunick NASCAR Chevy in 1963 was very interesting. I would have liked more technical detail on what happened to his race cars to cause poor finishes at Indy in 1973, 1982, etc.
Lone Star J.R.If you are a fan of Johnny Rutherford and racing in general, this is the book for you. The book gives insight from inside the racing world. It is a highly detailed account of Johnny's personal life and his racing career. I found his personal struggle to become a big time driver very interesting, as he started at a relatively late age for his era. It was also interesting to me to read his explanation of the many changes in racing and what was expected of a driver from his first race until his retirement. The candid comments and numerous photographs, make you fell like you've had a personal converstaion with J.R. himself. I believe almost anyone will enjoy this book.
