Guiding Readers and Writers(Grades 3-6) Teaching ...
Again, Fountas and Pinnell have helped teachers with their incredible insight on educating children. This time their help/advice/knowledge focuses on grades 3-6 but do not let that stop you if you teach another grade level. Their information on the essential components of a quality literacy program is true for any grade level. Fountas and Pinnell offer suggestions for effectively helping readers and writers who are not meeting "standard". These suggestions are specific and establish teaching practices that will help all readers and writers. They also give many mini lesson ideas and great literature connections that make a teacher's job easier. The appendices include forms for language/word study for both reading and writing and for literary assessment. Once again, their book ends with a valuable book list that is leveled. This book is an essential resource for all teachers.

This book will foster literacy success in your classroom!
Authors Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell have given language arts teachers a real gem of a resource.

Guiding Readers and Writers (Grades 3-6) contains a wealth of ideas that will inspire students to become more literate. I am a teacher of children with mild to moderate learning disabilities who plans on using this book as a springboard to teach Language Arts to 4th and 6th graders this fall. This summer, this book has proved to be a priceless resource in teaching reading in a summer school program for learners who are able to decode, but have a difficult time making the connection from print to meaning.

I have literally seen my classroom transformed as I have engaged the students in minilessons, conferences, group sharing and response journals all for the purpose of building a community of learners. Taking this book, and utilizing a constructivist approach, my classroom has become a place where each child is valued, encouraged to express him/herself, take risks, and celebrated for their unique perspective on the world.

Like I said, I have been using this resource for teaching summer school to children from regular education classrooms, but I am certain that my students who are on IEPs, for one reason or another, will also be intellectually stimulated by these, and many more methods this book has. I will be curious to see how end of year results compare with the baseline data I take in Aug. and Sept.

I am quite certain that Guiding Readers and Writers Grades 3-6 by Fountas & Pinnell will make a difference.

Creating a Reading/Writing Workshop in Your Classroom
If you have been wanting to convert your classroom into a reading/writing workshop but haven't known how to start, _Guiding Readers and Writers: Grades 3-6_ is the book for you! Authors Irene C. Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell have created a comprehensive manual for establishing a reading/writing community -- a place where students can spend two and a half to three hours a day engaged in authentic reading and writing.

Teachers who are already using a workshop approach are likely to find much in _Guiding Readers and Writers_ that will make their job easier. Even teachers of younger and older students will find many practical suggestions to implement.

Fountas and Pinnell see the goal of language arts instruction in the intermediate grades to be the creation of lifelong readers and writers. They structure the language arts class in a three-block framework: a sixty-minute reading workshop, a sixty-minute writing workshop, and a thirty- to sixty-minute language/word study segment (including spelling, vocabulary, decoding, and more).

In addition to providing a treasure trove of information, Fountas and Pinnell have produced a book that is remarkably readable and user-friendly. The two-column format is extremely helpful. In addition, frequent headings, bullet points, and graphics help you to efficiently get the information you need.

With photos and other graphics, Fountas and Pinnell show you how to organize your classroom, your materials, and your time for a reading/writing workshop. The authors provide step-by-step instructions for getting started (in a few instances even offering a sample script). They provide scores of suggestions for minilessons, and they recommend more than 1,000 books for classroom use. In addition, each section includes techniques to use with struggling readers and writers. The book even devotes a section to the "testing genre," helping students develop strategies to maximize their performance on standardized reading tests.

Furthermore, _Guiding Readers and Writers_ includes sixty-five appendices (nearly 150 pages)! Fifty-three of the appendices are reproducible pages that the teacher or the student can use for planning, record-keeping, assessment, analysis, etc. Most of the remaining appendices comprise lists of recommended books. A list of 1,000 books is repeated -- organized once by title and again by level.

_Guiding Readers and Writers_ will help you rekindle the passions that originally prompted you to become an English teacher -- and it will show you how to share those passions with your students. Focusing on the vital elements of communication is likely to produce the best year ever -- for you *and* for your students.

Awesome Book for Primary Teachers
Fountas and SuPinnel have written a book that has all the answers to any questions I have ever needed regarding teaching reading with groups. I have been teaching for 5 years and have finally found a book that really gives me clear explanantions, ideas, etc. The biggest question any teacher (especially beginning teachers) I know has ever asked themselves (including myself) was: "WHAT ARE THE REST OF THE CHILDREN DOING, while one works with a guided reading group? I have heard many ideas BUT this book has the best and most organized answer ever. If you have the same question(s) then you have to get this book. The entire book is fantastic, as Ms. Giacobbe put it, in the foreword, "why didn't someone tell us this before?" I felt the best part of this awesome book was Chapter Five: Managing the Classroom. The "Work Board" idea is one I've seen before but never truly understood until I read this book. The authors clearly tell you how to make, organize, and use the work board. They even explain, in detail, each Literacy Activity: Browsing Boxes, ABC, Listening, Art, Writing, Reading Around the Room, Independent Reading, Poem Box, Buddy Reading, and much more. Chapter Thirteen had some great ideas for Literacy Activities, specifically the Letter and Word Activities. The ABC Center ideas were excellent. Reading this book makes you want to do it all! I can't wait until the Fall!

An excellent resource book for eductors
Guided Reading and Word Matters (by same authors) are excellent resource books for educators and parents who are actively teaching their children literacy skills. Both books are "reader-friendly" and full of practical ways to help children experience success in language arts. I strongly recommend both books when I present workshops to primary-grade educators.

outstanding!
I knew that my guided reading program needed to change, but didn't no exactly how to go about improving it. This book has all the answers! Although I'm on summer break, I can't wait to go back in the fall and get started on my new literacy program, putting into practice all the things I've learned from this book.

Good reading here
A collection of 29 short stories from five remarkable authors! Talented author, Su Kopil, was kind enough to send me this for review. I am happy to say that this collection is fantastic!

Modern romance stories of all ages of lovers. First marriages, second chances, magical, renewed, you'll find them all here. Each will have you smiling and sighing in contentment.

Short stories cut out the fillers and additives. Instead, it gives you the meat immediately, so you will never be able to catch your breath with this book! Delightful, fun, and highly recommended!

Let's see more like these!
I picked up this book only because I was so bowled over by a writing book by one of the coauthors, Tami D. Cowden. I've read mystery short stories for years, but had never really seen a collection of truly short romance stories before - most of those are novellas.

But this unique collection does not contain novellas - these are nice punchy short stories just like I find in mystery anthologies. You'll be amazed at the characterization the authors manage to pack into so few words - the very brevity makes each story so much more powerful.

The stories themselves are quite varied. A few brought tears to my eyes, while others had me laughing out loud. Each one truly different from the other. The only things they have in common are the very satisfying happy endings!

I recommend this books as something off the beaten path. But frankly, I hope to see a lot more books like this in the future!

Great stories for the romantically inclined!
Need a quick pick me up? Hate having your reading time interrupted? Try Love Triumphs, a collection of short romance stories that will have you remembering that instant you fell in love. Written by five wonderful authors, this electronically published anthology is worth a second look. I usually like my romances long and involved, with detailed characterization and vividly imaginative settings, so this collection caught me by surprise. Each story is brief and yet has character portrayals that stick with you. Within these stories you are bound to find yourself, and come face-to-face with your own insecurities and doubts. Whether you are still searching for your true love or have been happily married for fifty years, these stories will remind you of that powerful, all-consuming feeling that we call love and how often it can catch us by surprise. Within every mountain there lies a sparkle of gold and within this collection there is a true gem. Seven stories truly touched my heart and left me yearning for more, more detail, more scenes, more joy and heartbreak. Author Carolee Joy is the treasure buried within these pages. Every story she wrote was more poignant, more heart-touching than the others. I sincerely hope to see more written by her in the future for I feel this is an author with true potential. If you have only five minutes during your day and wish you had something to fill it, pick up this great collection of stories. They might reflect you, they might move you, but they are guaranteed to touch your heart and remind you that love can often be found in the most unexpected of places. Recommended

Authentic without all that "mysticism"
I bought this book when I was living in Hong Kong, and given the availability of truly excellent Chinese food, cooking the same dishes at home was always a disappointment. This book makes it very easy and keeps the recipes simple and true.

Because I'm Chinese and not fascinated by the history or mysticism or "magic" of Chinese cooking, I cannot tolerate cookbooks that are filled with little details about how some great aunt escaped imprisonment, immigrated across the seas and brought this very recipe to the outside world!

Each recipe is accompanied by a full color photo -- not the most sophisticated presentation, and certainly not as slickly produced as other cookbooks -- which is incredibly useful. This shows how large or small to chop the ingredients, how thick a sauce is supposed to be, how everything looks when it's done correctly.

In addition, there is a explanatory introduction about Chinese cooking tools, techniques and ingredients. This is a very useful section, and above all other cookbooks in my kitchen, this is the most important part of my collection.

Currently my favorite Chinese cookbook.
Chinese Cuisine is the most often used book in my fairly large Chinese cookbook collection. The reason for that is because: 1) I love the recipes and choice of dishes: and 2) the information is conveyed so efficiently, that you don't find yourself having to re-read or repeatedly refer to the recipes as you do with most other cookbooks. The pictures, although not glamorous, give you a good idea of how the dish should be served up. Ocassionally, however, you'll notice that the photos show hand carved ingredients or ingredients that the recipe doesn't call for. You kind of wish that they would provide instructions or options for such items. It is an excellent book for anyone seeking an authentic Chinese cookbook.

Gotta get the entire collection!
I've had this book for 5 years i found it by chance in a bookstore and I love it! My copy is falling apart and covered in drips! these are amazing recipes- easy recipes for all my favorite dishes! Especially steamed pork back ribs with black bean sauce. (hey- try this with just chunks of pork if you can't find the spare ribs- it's still amazing!) There's actually like 5 or 6 recipes just on spareribs! The recipes are easy to follow- mine never look like the pictures of course- but they taste authentic and wonderful! There is a huge difference in this book- there are not photos showing you techniques throughout each recipe. i enjoyed that in the other wei-chuan books. But i do like the fact that they did photograph- every ingredient that you may possibly need with instructions on how to prepare it. Buy it, try the recipes... or just salivate over the pictures and rush off to chinatown and eat! My favorite thing to do while cooking from this book- is to play eat, drink, man, woman by ang li in the background!

Oriental Herbal Cook Book for Good Health
I purchased the book for my mom for her birthday. I've never been into Chinese herb myself, but she prepared a couple dishes that I thought was pretty good. My mom seems to enjoy the cook book. She contantly tells me how this one dish is good for what part of the body. A great book for moms whom cook and are interested in Asian herbs.

Cooking the way it was meant to be; with natural herbs.
I had to purchase this book for my wife. She is a health conscious fanatic of herbs. She believes the only way to liven a dish is to use natural herbs. She does not believe in the store bought seasonings. I am the cook of the house. When, I purchased this book I thought it was just another Martha Stewart. I have learned so much from this book, it is amazing. I love the way the author put pictures into to show what the herb looks like. I love the fact that he/she showed the herb, what it does, how to use it, and generally where it is available. Cookbooks usually, show elegant and sometimes easy dishes to make, but never where to get the key ingredients. I let my friends borrow it and they have amazing stories to tell. This is a great gift for those who are health conscious and people who are blinded by fried foods.

The food speaks for me...
I have a cooking class in high school. The reason I took cooking was so I wouldn't have to speak in front of the class. That is why I avoided drama. Our teacher asked us to choose any book we liked. We had to read it. Cook a meal from it , and we had to make sure we chose a book that we would want to recommend. Well, I am a fitness fanatic and I am involved in all the sports at school. A girl on my basketball team is Asian. Her mother bought this book. The reason I read it was Asians have the stereo type of being healthy and fit. Which is what I wanted my dish to portray. Other of my peers were just making the traditional vegetable platter or no meat dish. The reason I found this book a blue ribbon winner is because the author didn't write with excellency, but simplicity. She was wise to show photos of the cuisines and what they would do to strengthen your body. I like this book because any age is able to read, understand, and cook. I bought this book for my grandma for we have the same attitude toward health and food. I believe this book will be a succes for she arranged it well.

All the favorite comfort foods of Chinese cuisine!
This is one of my most cherished cookbooks! Just leafing through and seeing all the glorious photographs sets my mouth watering and inspires me to cook up one of these wonderful comfort foods, many of which I grew up with. The number and variety of Chinese snacks presented here is astounding, and the recipes are so absolutely authentic and well-tested, you cannot go wrong. Everything I have made has been utterly delectable.

The recipe selection is amazingly comprehensive. Included, of course, are the myriad varieties of buns and dumplings served at Cantonese dim sum or sold at Chinese bakeries in Chinatown. But the recipes go beyond that to present the whole gamut of comfort foods traditionally eaten at meals and as snacks in various regions of China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Included are the famous eight-treasure rice pudding and other molded puddings; Beijing-style crullers and sesame flatbreads eaten dunked in soy milk; steamed wheat-flour cakes and rice-flour cakes; deep-fried wheat-flour and rice-flour fritters and dumplings; baked, filled pies and turnovers, both savory and sweet; the famous won ton soup and other savory soups; sweet soups of rice dumplings, beans, taro, tapioca, almonds, etc., served hot or cold; varieties of egg rolls and bean-curd rolls; different regional varieties of moon cakes; steamed bread puddings; steamed bamboo-leaf-wrapped packages of savory meat, vegetables, and rice; the famed egg tarts and coconut tarts; cookies traditionally made for festivals and celebrations. . . . I could go on and on.

In short, this cookbook is simply the best collection of favorite comfort foods out there and well worth owning!

Even if you're not Chinese, this is a great Dim Sum guide
A Chinese friend recommended this book and the Chinese Cuisine companion. We have tried a number of the recipes and they come out tasting just like a good Dim Sum "snack" in San Francisco.

The recipes are especially well organized: the sets of ingredients are grouped and numbered, so it is easy to follow them. Good color pictures show exactly what you would see on a Dim Sum cart, so you don't have to know the name for sure. Every cookbook should be this well designed!

The text is in both English and Chinese.

I want the entire collection!
I LOVE the wei-chuan series of cookbooks. They are billingual and in my opinion the best Chinese cookbooks! I collect cookbooks and have american printed Chinese cookbooks from the 1970's to the present. Even the ones written by Chinese are adapted to suit the American palate in most cases. These cookbooks are terrific though! The recipes are all very close to my auntie's and grandmother's recipes and techniques. I love the photos guiding you through difficult steps. In this book- you'll find all the goodies you get in chinatown. i've tried out a lot of the recipes and they TASTE like the ones in chinatown! (uh- that would be a good thing!) I love the variety in this book; buns savory and sweet, moon cakes, egg tarts (dontots- the best thing in the world straight out of the oven!), dim sum- shui mai- har gao (that shrimp dumpling that everyone always orders) , jung taes- the Chinese burrito, sesame balls (I've burned my both of my hands entirely with hot oil- trying to make these puff so be CAREFUL!), you tiau those sticks of greasy bread that my mom refers to as a chinese donut for some reason, those gorgeous pastry flowers that look impossible to make but are surprisingly simple... okay this is just an amazing book and you will amaze yourself when you make your first snack. (so what if it looks completely different from the picture- the taste is still the same!!!)
