The Allure of Gnosticism: The Gnostic Experience in Jungian Psychology and Contemporary Culture

A useful and thought-provoking series of essays
Books on "gnosticism" often tend either to be in the academic stratosphere, or full of new age sensationalism. This volume is very useful in that it presents a variety of interesting viewpoints from (mostly) recognized scholars in the field. It's quite accessible and the closing chapter on modern gnostic revivals is of particular import for those seeking to comprehend the continued draw this ancient philosophy -- as radical or paranoid it may be -- exerts upon some elements of our society today. (I adopted this for use in an undergraduate course on gnosticism I teach.)

Interesting, but not outstanding
Because I am a fan of Amy Grant, I like to read anything written about her. This book gives a good back ground for how the industry of Contempory Christian Music evolved into the big business it is today. However, I sometimes got lost in the details of the different religions and history of the churches. Since it is unauthorized, there wasn't much written that I didn't already know-being a long-time fan. The book does re-inforce her rock-steady faith and love for God. Overall, the book gives a good chronilogical view of how Amy got into the business and made it what it is today

The Back Stage Handbook for Performing Artists: The How-To and Who-To Contact Reference for Actors, Singers, and Dancers

A useful guide (provided no one has moved)
This book gives information on how to contact agents and break into any aspect (almost) of show biz. It also has lists and lists of addresses to write to for agents, casting directors, auditions, etc... It's very useful, giving you all the needed information in one place instead of telling you to look at Ross Reports, but if addresses and phone numbers and contact people have changed (as they frequently do) it might not be as useful. If a newer version comes out, I'd buy that right away.

Great collection
This book features 57 great Blues songs for voice and piano. Great for a library or personal collection! It's rare to find an updated and fairly complete collection of good Blues scores. It includes most of the staples of Blues: "After You're Gone" "Beale Street Blues" etc.

Bobby Short: The Life and Times of a Saloon Singer

Authors: Bobby Short, Betty A. Prashker, and Robert Mackintosh

Bobby Short's life was an adventure. It still is.
Bobby Short, a quintessinal storyteller in song, is also capable of telling the story of his life in prose, in his own way, thank you very much.

Like his show, it's delightful. Bobby began playing piano in local saloons, went on to entertain in roadhouses, bars, nightclubs, cabarets, always with his eye on the audience. And now the "saloon singer" has performed for almost three decades in the Cafe Carlyle, not exactly your typical saloon ambiance. He learned a lot along the way.

First there's the talent. Then there's the inate sense of style, that sent a talented little boy in white tails, going off to make a living for his family by playing piano. He made a career for himself, honing his personal panache and learning from good and bad that came his way. The good included hearing jazz by the best, Art Tatum, Dorothy Donegal, Mabel Mercer, his idol, Duke Ellington. The bad was the bad all black performers knew in those days. Yet, he managed to meet and befriend the most sophisticated, talented, interesting people of every color. It all left its mark.

Bobby Short today, still has his focus on his audience, catching and keeping the attention. That is the important thing. It might be the secret of his success as a legendary interpreter of the American songbook.

Bonjour, Katrin! : singen, tanzen, leben
Published in Unknown Binding by G. Lèubbe ()
Author: Caterina Valente

A lot but not all
As a Caterina Valente fan of many years, almost from the very beginning of her singing career, I was also interested in finding out more about the person behind the singer. This book shows a lot of details, that hitherto were not available in any other source, but unfortunately glosses over periods that may bear sad memories for Caterina Valente. It would have been interesting to know more about the war years, the beginning of her recording career and the concert tours. However, as told by herself, the book provides a lot of information and reveals the person behind this superb singer to a great extent. It ought to be together with all her recordings in every Caterina Valente fan's home.

boy power kicks!
Wow! I just got Boy Power as a birthday gift and it is sooo cool. It's a really good book because it has awesome pictures of all the guys I really love. It has Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Freddie Prinze Jr, and that cutie from 'NSync, Justin Timberlake. This book is deeply cool because it gives loads of info about the boyz and it shows off lots of cute pictures. I mean when my friend got it for me for my birthday, it was the perfect gift. That's because I totally fall in love about 8 times a day, and there are plenty of guys in here to love. I give this book an enthusiastic 2 thumbs up!
