The laws of success

"Wonderful book on living a successful life"
I read this book some time ago. I also read a couple of other books by Sill. He was a genius, as well as a living example of the blessings and success one receives from obeying simple principles. I highly recommend this book.

excellent book, short chapters and easily read
Using references and examples from history, the author clearly identifies and analyses 33 laws of success. In doing so he is able to make clear how the reader is best able to incorporate this knowledge to ones own best interest. At the begining of the book is a guide to use the book to its fullest, and at the end of each chapter is space in which one may follow the instructions. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to better ones life, and I personnally am a repeat reader of it

a helpful and fun book, even if u dont plan adventure-eating
... This is an informative and enjoyable book, and lets you delve into Hong Kong culture and eating culture in a way the other books don't. The inside cover has a quick reference of several Cantonese terms in English and Chinese characters, including counting numbers and the very important "ngoh5 hei6 sou3 xig6 ge3" (I am a vegetarian). The book closes with over 50 pages of Cantonese phrases (including "I am ill", "I am pissed", "I want to throw up", and "Thank you, that was delicious"; a glossary of foods and terms; and a Hong Kong culinary dictionary (explains the main ingredients and cooking method). Each transliterated word is coded with the proper intonation, distilled into 6 basic tones. There are 200 beautifully photographed pages of places to eat (from concept to neon to mobile dai pai dong, to street restaurants); a discussion of the banquet; and analyses of staples, such as soups and noodles, rices and meats, and sauces. There are sections on shopping, picnics, utensils, medicinal foods, and "chinese table rules" (no vertical chopsticks please).

Lonely Planet World Food Hong Kong
Back in 1991 I set off for a twelve-month global journey. With me I had a few essentials, money, clothes, my wife and a collection of Lonely Planet Travel Guide Books. After a few weeks in India we found that the books were as essential to our survival as food and water. We went on to use the Lonely Plant Guide Books (or the LP as we termed them) though out Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, North American, Canada and Mexico. Sometimes our travels would be so fast and furious that we would not read about our next destination until we had arrived the town's bus depot. We grew to love and trust the LP - it never let us down. As you might imagine I was therefore thrilled to receive their latest departure in to travel writing "World Food Hong Kong ". Furiously I dived in to its pages. When I saw that pocket size book was written by Richard Sterling a guy who would - quote " go anywhere and court any danger for the sake of a good meal" I new I would be in for an interesting literary adventure.
Richard Sterling's other titles include; Dining With Headhunters; The Fearless Dinner; and the award wining Travelers' Tale. His much-applauded writing has won him praise from The James Beard Foundation and kudos from the Lowell Thomas awards.
The book 's contents are broken down fourteen chapters -
World Food Hong Kong starts with the essential aspect of understanding the domains cuisine culture. Sterling enlightens us on the island's history, flavors and influences. My learning began. It would seem that Hong Kong's cuisine is a melting pot of the nations tastes with the addition European influences; olive oil, ketchup and asparagus all worked themselves in to the fabric of the island's "local" cooking.
Staples and specialties are next; rice, noodles, tofu, meat, sauces flavorings - the list continues as do the lessons. We all know that in 1295 Marco Polo introduced the noodle to Italy but did you know he made his mark on the Chinese too; he introduced the kiss? The content continues with Drinks, Home Cooking, and Celebrating with Food. Food as Medicine is where I must pause to narrate. Sterling reminds us that the Chinese believe that "food, medicine and health are all part of the same continuum. This is derived from the Chinese philosophy of Yin and Yang, which applies as much to human health as it does to the cosmos. When all in the universe is in its proper balance, harmony reigns. But in a condition of imbalance, we risk ill health, misfortune violence and destruction. Lesson: Seek balance!" If you are seeking balance try the Yin Yang soup or if you are feeling peaky there is always the Lizard soup chicken and cloud fungus.
Seeking knowledge of unusual foods? Then move to the next chapter "The Bold Palate". These are foods for the brave. How about preserved eggs, snake or baby mouse wine? That is right the wine is made by preserving still-suckling baby mice in rice wine. Apparently this is jolly good for rejuvenating the body's organs. For those who have survived the journey thus far normality is ahead. Shopping and Markets, where to Eat and Drink, Understanding the Menu and a modest Recipe Section are all a great read. The where to eat chapter covers the complete dining gambit from the very upmarket Peninsular to low down street food and must try dim sum.
For the gourmet traveler the book finishes with a handy English to Cantonese culinary dictionary a must have for those who want to appear to know their jellyfish from their junk food.
As I close I am relived to say the Lonely Planet does it again, a captivating unpretentious little book, nit just physically but also financially suited for anyone's pocket. - Written By Jeremy Emmerson GobalChefs

A classic angling guide that still works today
I first read the Montana Angling guide in 1989, before my first trip to Montana. I was pleasantly surprised by the maps and fly suggestions. Once I got on the water, I appreciated the accuracy of the Guide. After all those years, I can still use it to select streams to fish with total confidence. For the most part, the only thing that has changed is the explosion of anglers all over the west (and probably all over the US). Some streams, such as the Blackfoot River system, have improved due to more enlightened conservation techniques. Probably the list of stores, fly shops, and motels need to be updated. But when I return to Montana, I always take along the Guide and the Geological Survey map of Yellowstone Park. Now I don't go to some streams due to crowds. Others are just as good as they were when I first went there. Hint1: Very few anglers hike off the road more than 100 yards. This leaves lots of territory for the rest of us. Hint2: We always know there will be quality, uncrowded fishing when the trailhead sign warns of bears being sighted within one mile. This sign apparently frightens away many hikers.
While I haven't read hundreds of angling guides, today I still would refer to the Guide's stream maps as my first resource, and I wouldn't look for anything better.

Montana Angling Guide - Super information for fly fishing
If you have wondered about the day when you could afford to go to the "Big Sky Country" and catch trout like a pro, this book is a MUST. It tells you how to get there, the access points, and everything you need to really enjoy your trip to Montana fly fishing. It is well written and simply MUST be a part of your fishing gear when you get to Montana. Wheather you are new to fly fishing in Montana, or an old hand, the wealth of information and readable style makes the book worth twice the price. I would hope that fishing guides would recommend this to their clients before they come to Montata.

As you can see, I am very enthusiastic about a well written worthwhile trout fishing guide.

Hope you will agree !

Wonderful little gem of a book for mothers
Whimsical drawings and short phrases dot the pages of this little treasure. Modern motherhood is viewed by defining the various roles mothers perform. Some roles are entertainer, role model, juggler, nurturer, and even lover, the author defines who a mother is to the various loved ones in her family. Cute little drawings illustrate the humorous and serious aspects of each role.

This book contains references more toward the mother of school-aged children and teenagers. There are no references to mothering babies, such as breastfeeding or diaper changing. (As the mother of young children I wish there was a volume for just mothering babies and toddlers! I am sure it would be wonderful.) There are references to listening to your child's problems and sitting down to discuss things over tea and Kleenex. Some of the pages would be lovely framed.

A lovely little book that is appropriate for a gift.

Sweet and thoughtful
I found this gem in a bookstore in Tokyo. The thoughtful situations, so relevant to a mother's life, are portrayed mostly by lovely drawings and a few carefully selected words. As an at-home mom, I often feel misunderstood. But Ms. White understands....perfectly. I bought this book for my mom for Mother's Day.

The peculiar exploits of Brigadier Ffellowes
Published in Unknown Binding by Walker ()
Author: Sterling E. Lanier
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Raconteur of the Exotic
In a gentlemen's club, retired Brigadier Ffellowes recounts exotic and mysterious tales from his travels abroad. His subjects include, among other things, the keeper of the sea serpents, Nazi invaders who met an older threat in Greece, a Basque town that has no cemetery, a strange Irish hunt, and why the Brigadier will never eat crab or go on safari again.

Even though the first of these stories was published in 1968, they have the flavor of your favorite old tales of the fantastic and 19th-century ghost stories, H. Rider Haggard and A. Merritt and G.K. Chesterton, and lively stories told in the good old British style with lean rich prose and a self-deprecating twinkle in the eye.

Gentleman's adventure tales of supernatural encounters
At a gentlemen's club, a British adventurer tells of his encounters with the exotic and supernatural: ghosts, neanderthals, monsters, and strange cults.

Should appeal to fans of similar tales from Avram Davidson and Manley Wade Wellman.

Outstanding book on relationships. Something for everyone.
The main point of the book is summed up on page 17, "The individual can rarely just act, nor is forcing others to act usually an option. The net result is that effectivemess in the political world stems from the ability to influence the people and organizations that share power. This, more than any other reason, is why the only real power is the power to persuade." The author presents a compelling model using the points of the compass to represent key relationships everyone must form. The author claims that success requires sensitivity and the ability to persuade those at each compass point: Center - yourself; North - those you work for; East - those you work with; South - those who work for you; and, East - those you should work with. Strategy, tactics, and examples are presented for maintaining these relationships. The Power to Persuade is a significant book. In the political and non-profit arenas persuasion is the primary means whereby change occurs. The author implies that while these techniques are useful in the "for-profit" world, they are not as important as in the "non-profit" world. I challenge the author on this point. I believe that persuasion is becoming more and more integral in the "for profit" business world as leadership crumbles, use of teams and self-directed work groups increases, and integrated design methodologies take hold.

Great book on working in government, less useful for busines
The author has many years of experience as a federal official, and gives us the benefit of his experience. He describes four generic groups of people that government people must work with, and gives useful advice on dealing with each group. There is also an excellent list of books recommended for further reading. Valuable if you work in an area where you have little ability to do "command and control" but have to lean heavily on diplomacy. Especially highly recommended for those who work or aspire to work in government.

Who is this author?
A friend recommended this book and to my delight, it was wonderful, so I highly recommend it! The characters are beautifully drawn and the plot, with its twists and surprises, has an architecture that keeps you rivited till the end. I've never heard of the author, but I'll be looking to see what else she's written.

Compelling Murder Mystery
I couldn't put this book down. I read it in one sitting. Ruth Sterling is able to transport you into a world of intrigue and suspense. The scenes come alive as if you were there. I can't wait for her next one.

Technician's Guide to Fiber Optics
Published in Hardcover by Delmar Thomson Learning (January, 2004)
Author: Donald J. Sterling
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Good Book for Starters!
This is a very good introduction to fiber optics and telcom as it relates to fiber optic systems. There isn't really that much in terms of equations, but there's plenty of good information about fiber optics in general. It doesn't go into details as to the actual 'technician' side of fiber optics. Perhaps a book on polishing, characterizing networks and the like would be better. I enjoyed the book since it was easy to read, understand, and had very simple (yet useful) equations.

Concise without being Overwhelming
Provides a comprehensive and fundamental overview of fiber optic methods and design criteria. Like any engineer, once I find a book like this I hang on to it and don't even lend it to my nearest relatives

the travelers tales guides continue to blow me away...
This book is incredible. Whether you view the Travelers Tales series as a travel collection or as an essay collection, they are fabulous. I find that after each book I read, the list of places I want to visit grows. And I also continue to be impressed by how well-edited all of the titles are. This particular book is a bit edgier than some of the other titles. They really stretched the limits of what food is. I am living abroad right now and sometimes I feel the need for familiar tastes so deep down in my soul. It was comforting to read a book that recognizes the importance of food in our lives and culture. The themes and experiences presented in the stories surprised me. I kept wondering what they would throw at me next.
Reading "Food" is an adventure of the most wonderful kind. I highly recommend this book. And pick up any of the other Travelers Tales while you're at it. They're all excellent.

A must-read for lovers of food and/or travel
These are stories of how travelers made connections with people and places through the medium of food. Some of the stories are hilarious, others make you want to hug someone you love. Almost all of them will make you want to learn more about other places and cultures. This is simply one of the best books on food I have ever read.

100 Hikes in Washington's South Cascades and Olympics
Published in Paperback by Mountaineers Books (June, 1992)
Authors: E. M. Sterling, Harvey Manning, and Mountaineers
Amazon base price: $10.95
Used price: $1.60
Average review score:

Well Organized
This book is a must have for hiking Washingtonians. To start with the way the contents is set up you can quickly locate the area you want to hike. For each hike there is the distance, time, elevation, elevation gain, season when to hike, kind of hike and map number listed on the first page. Plus each hike has a simple map. There are a lot of day hikes, the kind I like to do in here, just a few 8 hour or more. This book along with "Don't Waste Your Time in the North Cascades" are essential for the weekend hiker in Washington.
