Someone has often done IT already!
This is a beautifully written and produced monograph concerning one of the most outstanding practical and scientific surgeons who has ever lived or likely to do do so. Every medical student should know about him, but sadly, almost none do. Certainly every trainee cardiovascular surgeon should know about him and his work in detail, but, alas, hardly any of us do.

Thus we, are indebted to Dr Edwards and the publishers for bringing this delightful short book and its Nobel Prize winning subject to our attention

Exactly what I was looking for!
As a beginner I was looking for a very indepth book with alot of samples of different techniques. This is a wonderful book with 3 great sections on oils, acylics and watercolors. Chapters include basic techniques, step by step projects, guides to materials and equipment. With over 400 pages it truly is a complete painters course and well worth the price!

Plainspoken poems give insight into western life
The poems in Barbed Wire, written by John Sterling Harris, include for the most part his thoughts on the western way of life, but are influenced heavily by his stint in the army, and by his religious beliefs. The accompanying photos by L. Douglas Hill bring the works of poetry to life, often quite hauntingly. The most touching poems in the collection and the ones with the most life in them, are the poems in which Harris shows a picture of western life. These are not entire stories; Harris simply paints the reader a picture of a single event, and lets the reader consider it. He shows the harshness of the life but does not ask for sympathy for his characters. Instead, he instills qualities that enable the reader to relate to them, making the reader think about his own life. Some of Harris' poems ask the reader to examine himself, and still others ask him to examine his actions. Through his poetry, Harris is able to reflect a western way of life that is very complex. He does not categorize life as good or bad. He simply gives pictures of western life in plain simple language, mixed liberally with sensitivity. There are few critics of Harris' first book of poetry, as he simply did not attract in-depth study to his work. However, there is a depth to his plainspoken poems that epitomizes the Western Spirit. In just one thin volume of poetry, he is able to show a true portrayal of the pain and triumph faced everyday. Perhaps more importantly, he shows how what sometimes looks like passiveness on the surface of a westerner, can hid a force of spirit that no length of Barbed Wire could ever fence.

Excellent book for a child to associate daily activities.
This book has increased my 15 month old son's vocabulary immensly. The layout is perfect for a child to make day to day associations. Should be followed by "Benjamin's First Word Book".

It's a hit!
My son loves this book. At age 10 months, he will sit and look at it for 10 minutes as intently as if he were studying for a major exam! It's pretty funny!

A "Must Read" in Black History and Women's History
Ellen Craft, Ida B. Wells-Barnett and Mary Church Terrell should be familiar names to anyone interested in women's history or black history. Unfortunately, too few are aware of all three women.

The author accompanies brief (40 pages) well-written biographies of each woman with photographs and a timeline of key events in her life. The introduction provides an overview of the significance of each woman, and there is an excellent bibliography.

Outstanding Young Reader Biography
"The howl of a wolf might just be that. But sharper ears could sometimes detect a note more sinister." Thus, Sterling North, the author of Newberry Winner "Rascal", starts his biography of the early adventures of the French-Canadian voyageur, Pierre Esprit Radisson. In history Radisson, along with his brother-in-law Medard Chouart, Sieur de Grossilliers, is best known for the mid-17th century explorations of the upper Great Lakes and Hudson Bay regions which led to the founding of the famed Hudson Bay Company. However, North's biography focuses not on Radisson's rather limited contributions to history, but on his adventures as young man: his capture and adoption by the fearsome Mohawks at age 16, his escape from a French mission besieged by hundreds of Iroquois warriors at age 20, and his journey to the western shore of Lake Superior where he became the first white man to meet the Dakota Sioux at age 25.

This book was written for young boys between ages 9-12. It is very readable and is packed with battles, escapes, hardships, and epic journeys. Radisson's young life was the stuff of movies! It also includes some wonderful, although highly romaticized, illustrations of Pierre and his adventures. North clearly loved the subject and included in the text some passages from Pierre's own autobiography, "Voyages," complete with 17th century spelling which may be confusing to young readers. However, North's imagery of the untouched North American wilderness and thrilling portrait of a young Frenchman's adventures with various Eastern Woodland tribes is what makes this biography so wonderful.
