All but forgotten
My dad was a Studebaker dealer and I grew up reading everything I could about the company. Following them through the early to mid fifties was agony. This is a very detailed description of their rise, near demise, and eventual failure. Excellent history and nostalgia. Actually a bit sad but I could not put it down.

Great Book
Explores the nature of the company rather than just the products. The insights are revealing and the style is engaging. The lessons from this study can be applied to the success and failures of the other American automotive manufacturers. It is valuable for both the automotive enthusiast as well as the student of management and business.

Lots of Useful Information!
This is a very fact-packed and timely book. It begins with a look at the history of ESCOs, and a look at their present and expected future. Eleven chapters focus on "the customer/ESCO relationship process" - covering topics such as the RFP development process, formulation of written documents, and ongoing measurement and verification processes. There are numerous figures and tables. The appendix includes a listing of for-profit utility regulatory agencies, a glossary of terms, miscellaneous conversion factors, and related information. No matter what your present level of knowledge on this topic is, you'll learn something from this book. Plus, the author is very credible. He's not only a PhD, but also a Certified Plant Engineer!

Excellent cursory review of ways to sidestep costs
I thought this book spoke well to the non-technical persons who might be involved with utility cost management in a commercial or industrial environment. The information was new and in depth where it needed to be. The author is abviously an expert in the field and has a knack for clearly explaining its complexities to those who arn't. I recommend this book to any person interested in their bottom line.

International History in the Making
WOW, not only was Studebaker a carriage, wagon, small car and truck manufacturer, of which this book chronicles the early history. Studebaker was also a great symbol of peace and hope for a world divided by idealology and war. Studebaker trucks were part of the American Lend-Lease program and as such were one of the few things that gave those of the old Soviet Empire a real positive effect about Americans and America. Having traveled myself in areas of the old Soviet Union, I have found many people who found good feelings of America in the presence of these old trucks. Many were used after the war on communal farms and in over the road transporation, often in Siberia and other far reaches. Many people, having been feed the steady diet of American terror and failure, realized that America was not a really bad place because they made this truck. This truck became the common element by which I made many friends and endeared many Russian and Ukrainian people to me and to the American way of life. This book begins to tell the story and its sequel book takes the reading public throughout the history of Studebaker, a must look at!

Reader posseses the spirit of the High Mountain Desert.
Becoming Travelers in an Antique Land

Open Travelers in an Antique Land and become part of the American High Mountain Desert. William Studebaker, poet, and Russell Hepworth, photographer, present audiences the spirit of the High Mountain Deserts of Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and Nevada. From each place portrayed, as in "The Space Closest to Our Bodies," We learn to hear a voice

with no sound, with no tongue

with no mouth, as if the air

itself was a way of speaking.

The union of the poet and the photographer with the the High Desert is gentle and mystical. Words and pictures ease readers into their own relationship with the land and its dimensions beyond the common stereotypically flat images of the High Desert while zipping along I-84. The phototgraphs and poems do not deal with people, only what they left while passing through the High Desert such as plows, jet planes, and religion, or how humans indifferently poisoned the land with abandoned cars, asphalt, and nuclear waste. Now matter how humans treated the High Desert, however, its spirit is not destroyed as seen in "Another Time" where

The fence posts were

as deranged as lunatics

loose at noon

..................

But beyond

the distant horizon,

the one the near-sighted

have never seen,

the sky stretched overhead

and the center held

another time.

And so, the High Desert center holds by preserving such wonders as Hell's Canyon, camas bulbs, ritual mating of upland birds, and the patterns and reach of rock formations--the DNA of the High Mountain Desert--the spirit that is, was, and will be.

Each page of Studebaker's poetry faces one of Hepworth's crisp black-and-white photographs. The work stems from the artists' emotional responses to the the desert land that transcend politics or economics or ethnicity. Each of Hepworth's photos visually clarifies the corresponding poem. Studebaker gently draws readers into and through his verse with vivid images, wry humor, and concern for his subjects arising from personal experiances.

Travelers in An Antique Land is for those who wish to hold the High Mountain Desert in their hands and minds, to become part of the place, and to gain a deeper view of themselves.

Fun and Easy to read!
This book was very interesting and very informational. I was actually able to sit down for hours and read. I am not a person that is able to stay focused on one thing for a long period of time, but with this story I was constantly interested.

Great book on the first 100 years of Studebaker
I have a copy of this book which was sent to me when I was a youngster who corresponded with the editor of The Studebaker News (a publication for Studebaker Dealers). I still have the original box that it was mailed in. I consider it a collector's item.

Teacher's Guide to Wisdom for a Lifetime: How to Get the Bible Off the Shelf and Into Your Hands

Author: Alden Studebaker
Amazon base price: $3.95

Unlock the Wisdom for Yourself
Wisdom for a Lifetime is a well-written, engaging book which has made my study of the Bible deeper and more meaningful. While I have grown up in Unity and had passing familiarity with a number of well-known Bible stories and verses, I had never really studied the Bible. I was intrigued by the concept of Rev. Studebaker's book and found it able to re-ignite my interest in the Bible. It gave me insights into additional study tools which have enriched my study. Wisdom also helped me to select a Bible that built upon my childhood exposure, yet was understandable for me today. And to my benefit, the book has truly helped get my Bible into my hands on a regular basis for the first time in my life. I strongly recommend this book for anyone seeking to unlock the wisdom of the Bible for themselves.

Bringing Gods words into my family's life
I would like to thank author Alden Studebaker for his gifted talent for providing a path for my family and I to study the bible together. His writings have not only brought my family closer together but has shown us how we may search to better understand Gods word.

The reviewer who claims to be a Unity Minister clearly does not understand those of us who every Sunday sit and listen to Ministers who read and study the good book everyday. The reviewer needs to spend more time LISTENING to the flock than listening to himself.

Thanks again Alden Studebaker, your book has opened up a new begining for my family.

A Good Book on the Good Book
Too many people don't read the Bible and if they only would, their lives would be immeaurably richer. They would find Wisdom for the whole of their lives if they did. This is the theme of this charming, lighthearted, yet scholastically sound book on learning how to read and interpret the best-selling and least-read book of all time, the Bible.

When you pick up a Bible, it can seem daunting but author Studebaker assures us that there are many things you can do to ease the pain. He trains the reader on how to select a Bible, how to find supplementary books to provide special insights, and then gives, rather remarkably, I think, lenses by which the reader can practice seeing a Bible passage from NINE different points of view.

The main focus, all the time, is to help the reader want to use the Bible to find answers to his or her life questions. I find this extraordinary. I also love the fine balance between intellect and intuition this book advocates. To me, scripture of any kind deserves both.

There is a reviewer who claims to be a "Unity minister" and yet shows little understanding of this balance in his review of this book. Just because Studebaker recommends Bibles who have more than one translator, doesn't mean he doesn't find the Lamsa version useful. In fact, he says that he does. I'm a Lamsa fan myself but this doesn't keep me from realizing that it is unlikely that his version came from an original Aramaic text. That said, his Bible is still fresh and insightful. What's more, Studebaker nevers says you shouldn't use a Bible outside of his "recommended list." In fact, he DOES say that he recommends that we choose whatever version we will actually read!

Also, to say that the Lamsa Bible is loved by "all Truth students" is gross exaggeration. It is simply not true.

The reviewer's comments are so out of place and irrelevant to the book in question that I wonder if he may not have a special agenda; I do smell a vendetta against the author! For example, the "wisdom" the reviewer objects to is never intended to be the wisdom of Studebaker's book but the wisdom of the Bible. This is so obvious--but not to our reviewer. What he erroneously accuses Studebaker of doing in his book, our reviewer demonstrates in his review, namely nitpicking and losing his spiritual focus!

I, also a Unity minister, Bible interpreter, and Lamsa fan, strongly recommend WISDOM FOR A LIFETIME as the best book out there on how to get the Bible off the shelf and into your hands!

Self-inflicted tragedy
I was born in South Bend and my neighbors and relatives worked at Studebaker. This book is an excellent portrait of a company sliding inexorably downhill. Some of the factors that killed Studebaker were internal (labor relations, high unit costs, lack of due diligence about the company's condition in the Packard merger) and some were external (George Romney's refusal to form a fourth major out of American Motors). Discussed in detail are the beautiful cars Studebaker built and their skill in managing the difficult transition from wagonmakers to automakers. (Lincoln rode in a Studebaker carriage to Ford's theater) Bonsall doesn't hesitate to point out the flaws and missteps Studebaker made, though. This book is an affectionate portrait of an American company that was part of the landscape for a century and has now vanished without a trace. Recommended.

An interesting look....
"More Than They Promised" was an excellent read. It detailed the entire history of Studebaker from its beginnings as wagon makers to its entry into the manufacture of automobiles.

Particularly interesting was the postwar era, especially after the disasterous merger with Packard. It SHOULD have worked, but in reality it was a total failure. The Sherwood Egbert era was very well detailed with his last-ditch efforts to save the automobile operations of what had by then become a conglomerate. At the time of their death, cars were but a small part of the empire.

I am fascinated by the Studebaker story, although I was only 8 years old when the last Studebaker was produced. I have often wondered what would have happened had they survived. Would they have survived the increasingly oppressive government safety and emission requirements? Would they have survived the fuel crises of '73 and '79?

I have had the pleasure of visiting the Studebaker National Museum in South Bend, IN. Having seen these beautiful cars, particularly the "Loewy coupes" of 1953-55, I couldn't help but draw the conclusion that Studebaker was too far ahead of their customers.

Even if you are not a "car geek" as I am, you would likely enjoy reading "More Than They Promised".

studebaker enthusiast must read
awesome cronological of a great car company that should still be producing cars today

Entertaining book that addresses gay/lesbian questions.
I enjoyed the fast pace of That Old Studebaker and read it over a weekend. It addresses the questions about love that we all have rolling around in our heads. There are many different characters explored that all have different attitudes and ways of living their lives. Each character is refreshing and the ride in the old studebaker puts a nice perspective on coming out in a straight world. I highly recommend the book to anyone who is just coming out or who is questioning his/her sexuality.
