So-So
With Haynes and Chilton's, you pretty much get what you pay, although in my opinion you get a little bit more from hayens than chiltons...but that's another topic. as far as manuals go, you're always better off with the 3 volumes of the toyota factory manuals ... for the three volumes-but are much better quality than these other two manuals. as far as this manual goes, it's not bad, there's some good information (that is if you care about dismantling your entire engine block and suspension/struts/shocks the whole 360) as far as simple things like knowing which wires to replace your speakers with, or tearing out the door panel to grant access to a window driver cable...this book is a little iffy. not great photos by any means, all b&w. this book is dominated by photos for the more mechanically inclined tasks, with only one section reserved for the actual interior of the car itself. it's not a bad manual, even still the mechanical instructions are not that great themselves, but still...it's better than nothing. I'd recommend these to any DIY person, you gain a little insight into the inner-workings of your car and how they're put together-but NOT how they work. for ex: I would like to DIY install an anti-roll bar for my suspension for my camry, this book doesn't venture into how to install after-market parts, or even how the original OEM parts all work together, JUST how to disassemble and reassmeble the car's OEM parts.
overall: 3.5 really, but you're better off with the toyota factory manuals (the same manuals your mechanic uses).

Great book on the 92-96 series Camry
Perfect book for general through advanced auto repair on the Camry. Relevant information on this series of Camry. I am very satisfied with this book.

Well organized and written
Well organized and plenty of diagrams and specifications. Great for the hobbyist mechanic.

Good Mechanical guide not so hot of body fixtures.
Paul Matthews from UK. Hampshire Very good mechanical guide. Not so good on body fixtures The Haynes manuals have like most car manuals restricted their usually comprehensive coverage of everythng and more about your model to the limited scope that a DIY mechanic is "able to perform". This is due a lot to the complicated electrical control that most cars now support. The replace that black box for £400 and that will solve it type of car. The Haynes Manual as always cannot be faulted on the Engine strip downs and re-builds, brakes, susspension etc. All the "mechanical" aspects are their. The only dissapointment I had was with the coverage of the body work fittings, fixtures etc. (No mention of the Sun roof fitted as standard on most models!) The manual covers the dates 1986-1993 however it does not cover the change in Model body types fully. This is a wide scope to cover I appreciate the vast number of car models but how about a narrower view, cover single models per book as most info will be a duplication but the body fixtures could be in greater detail. Other than this a great Manual as always from Haynes.

Where's the beef?
I was hoping that this Haynes manual would be similar in detail to the Haynes manual I had owned for my Datsun 240Z. The Datsun manual was full of engine, transmission, rear axle, and general specifications. The engine section of this Haynes manual has warpage limits, torque values and clearances, but is lacking in general specifications such as cylinder bore and stroke, displacement and compression ratio. Yes, the cylinder bore is given, but only in the engine overhaul section. All these specifications are normally found in the front of a service manual, but are mostly absent here. Transmission specifications and gear ratios are absent.

The prcedures given are adequate. I just wish this book had more general technical specifications for the car. I guess that's too much to ask from a manual that covers 15 model years.

I have used the book when working on my RA60, Its great!!
This book has helped me go step by step through minor problems that have gone wrong with my car. When repairing the car it is a valuable source of information that every Celica owner needs.

i use this book frequently my RA29 keeps on rolling
this book taught me how to be a mechanic. i've kept my car running for 10 years with it. the troubleshooting guide is invaluable....joe h.

Toyota Production System: An Integrated Approach to Just-In-Time

TOYOTA COSTER MANUAL
I am looking for toyota coster repaire manual RH 89 MODEL pleas send me to any infomation.

The nuts and bolts of how JIT works.
With all of the recent attention to "Lean Manufacturing" (Womak, The Machine That Changed The World, Lean Thinking), this book, now in its third edition, is different. Rather than telling you how to implement the Toyota Production System, Monden gives the reader a comprehensive technical description of how the entire system functions, and how the pieces work together to form the most effecient production system known.

This is not, however, a generic overview. This book covers Toyota's implementation as it applies to building their products. Nevertheless, the principles translate to every industry where things are made.

Any serious practitioner or industry leader attempting to implement or operate a lean production system needs to read, and re-read, this book.

Chilton's Toyota Celica/Supra 1971-1987
This book is an excellent source of imformation for the repair and maintence of older Celicas and Supras. The only drawback is that it covers such a wide range of years and models that it can be difficult to locate information pertaining to a specific year/model. This book is useful for amateur mechanics or anyone who just wants to save some money on car repairs.

And I thought *my* job was rough
A well-written shop-floor view of the Japanese auto industry in the mid-to-late 1970's, when Japan's automakers were struggling to meet America's demand for small cars during the oil crisis.

Kamata worked as a contract employee on the assembly line of a Toyota factory and tells of 12-to-16 hour shifts six days a week, managers who increased production quotas beyond the limit of human endurance with no regard to safety, and the consequenses of a draconian employment contract.

Compare this to Ben Hamper's "Rivethead," which provides a similar (more humorous) shop-floor view of the auto industry during approximately the same era, but at a GM Plant in Flint, Michigan.

Good for a enthusiast
Sufficient details for an enthusiast who loves to take care of his car. Book has neat diagrams . The diagrams are sometimes approximate as the one for front seats, little imagination helps. It is good to fix things here and there and general small maintainance. If U know your tools, this is the starting point.

TOO general
This book covers too many model years to be effective. I have a 1975 Corolla with vacuum problems. The cover says it has complete vacuum diagrams, so I shelled out the 20 bones. I got it home and ripped the plastic off only to find vacuum diagrams omitted for the years 70-83. The wiring diagrams leave out key systems, like the seat belt circuit, which do not come out of the spool unless all five wires are properly connected! Most diagrams are geared toward late model cars, and every diagram is filled with acronyms and abbreviations which are defined NOWHERE in the book! I consider myself pretty adept at understanding and fixing cars, but does anyone know what these are?!: AAP, TVSV, VCV, ASV, HAI, EBCV, HIC, VTV, etc. I am really not trying to trash this book, but that is where mine is going...

Oh, but there is a really good section on how to change the wiper blades! And here's one I'm sure everyone will use: wheel alignment; as if the home mechanic is ever going to do that.

Check the link above, mine is for sale!

toy things
i've got a 1985 toyota corolla 1296 cc 5 door can you help me with the thoery manual books best for this car

toyota manuals
to anyone intrested, you can buy official, complete maintanance and repair manuals directly from toyota for any model or year.
call the toyota material distribution center at 1-800-622-2033 or you can buy them at any toyota dealership.
on another note, i would like to state that the 1987 corolla hatchback in manual transmition is one of the best cars ever made. mine (befour i owned it) has been driven hard, rusted out, abused, and left in the woods for 2 years it still runs great.
