Prime Tennis: Triumph of the Mental Game
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (August, 2000)
Author: Jim Taylor Ph.D.
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Prime Tennis ---> Prime reading
I've been coaching tennis for 18 years. I've been playing competitively for 30 years. I've been a High School English teacher for 7 years. In "Prime Tennis", Dr. Jim Taylor offers fresh ways of looking at the many problems I help kids try to overcome. As a player and coach, I have heard and attempted to teach the concepts of motivation, confidence, intensity, and focus without any tangible grasp of how to get the message to the student. I think we hope that the player just sort of understands. In "Prime Tennis", these big ideas are analyzed and then formatted to offer coaches and players a means of achieving what Dr. Taylor calls "Prime Tennis". This "Prime Tennis" is control and understanding of the mental side of tennis as a means of becoming a better player. Both parts of the process are valuable. In analyzing these big ideas, Dr. Taylor offers meaningful definitions and examples of how these factors effect our tennis abilities. Dr. Taylor goes on to put these big ideas into a format which he offers as a plan for players to improve. Finally, he gives the reader help in utilizing this understanding of the mental game using visualization, training, and match type situations. This last section is especially valuable as we try to bring the big ideas of focus, intensity, motivations, and confidence to the players. Instead of talking at the player about how these ideas play a role in success, we are now prepared to work with kids in understanding these ideas as a means of helping them succeed. "Prime Tennis" is written with tennis as it's focus. However, as with most high quality instruction books, the process is relevant to career, parenting, relationships, other sports, and teaching. The author offers quotes from some expected sources and some surprises that help the reader to get the point. "Prime Tennis" is a well written, worthwhile book for educators, coaches and players.

Prostate Cancer: A Doctor's Personal Triumph
Published in Hardcover by Paul S. Eriksson (October, 1999)
Authors: Saralee Fine and Robert Fine
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

LIBRARY JOURNAL
Like many men confronted with a diagnosis of prostate cancer (Pca.), Dr. Fine, a radiologist writes, "I've read so much medical information my head is spinning... still can't decide which treatment to choose." Both Dr. Fine and his wife kept a journal of their quest for the right cure for them. Their book - consisting of their alternating, frighteningly personal diary entries and transcriptions of taped medical consultations - records their reasons for eventually choosing brachytherapy (in which radioactive pellets are implanted directly into the tumor). This book is valuable because few men with Pca will be able to tap into the healthcare network and scholarship as capably as the Fines have. Offering a uniquely expert point of view and a wealth of detailed information, it will be a wonderful guidebook for the less-advantaged Pca patient. Recommended for academic and public libraries alike. -- James Swanton, Harlem Hosp. Lib., New York

Quality Wars: The Triumphs and Defeats of American Business
Published in Hardcover by Free Press (March, 1994)
Author: Jeremy Main
Amazon base price: $32.95
Average review score:

Wanna know the truth ?
Jeremy Main minces no words in outlining the triumphs and defeats ( so-called ) of the TQM efforts made by different companies . He has gone to the depth of understanding why these efforts fail or succeed . The backing of the Juran Institute in this endavour only adds to the credibility of this effort . Recently Dr. Juran ( on the 26th of Feb 2002 ) declared publicly that Jeremy Main was one of the two journalists who really understood Quality Management in it's entirety . All in all - a very good read .

Heart Warming & Eye Opening Storiest
I enjoyed this book as it reveals the stories behind the stars. It is suprisingly inspirational. This wonderful book prompted me to read Barbara Barrie's equally wonderful book, Second Act about her bout with colon cancer. Both Books givew great insight into life. Fame, beauty and Stardom matters not. One does not feel alone after reading these two wonderful books. One never knows what waits.

Roads to Oblivion: Triumphs and Tragedies of British Car Makers 1946-56

Settle down in your easy chair and enjoy it!
The time was the period immediately following the conclusion of World War II. The nation was Great Britain, one fo the victors in this titanic six-year struggle. The industry was the automobile manufacturing establishment of the British Isles, looking toward regaining its prewar strength.

At first glance, the British motor car industry appeared to be in an enviable position. As an entity which, despite the ravages of war, possessed the ability to produce considerable numbers of vehicles, it could look forward to furnishing pleasure cars to automobile-starved markets both domestically and abroad. Its international competitors were few, with its principal one, the huge American automobile enterprise, primarily concerned at the time with supplying the needs of its own population.

Despite these apparent advantages, however, many companies which collectively made up this important British-based industry were to encounter severe problems in the next decade, which would result in their ultimate demise. How

Robin: Tragedy & Triumph
Published in Paperback by DC Comics (November, 1993)
Authors: Alan Grant and Chuck Dixon
Amazon base price: $9.95
Average review score:

the latest Robin at his finest
This trade paperback collects two Robin story arcs, the first telling of the death of Tim Drake's mother and the crippling of his father (before he became Robin) and the second telling of Tim's first conflict with the Joker without Batman watching his back. Both stories are satisfying and help to develop the young Robin as a character. The Joker's Wild story, reprinted from the second Robin miniseries, is really incredible. Tim is depicted as a totally normal teenager in most regards (although he has an odd after school job), and Chuck Dixon actually can write teenagers as actual people, something a lot of writers who try to write about teens can't do. All in all, a great book for fans of the dynamic duo, especially Robin, of course.

The best book on the subject

Excellent companion to the A&E fall series.
I have this wonderful companion to the Sharpe episodes that will air on A&E this fall. If you have read the Sharpe books of Bernard Cornwell, then you will love the series and this book describes each of the 14 episodes. It also talks about the filming of each episode and the cast and crew. There is information about the historical people that are in the episodes and maps detailing famous battles, like Talavera, Badajoz, and Waterloo. Just a fantastic book with lots of beautiful pictures.

Signal: the Years of Triumph
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall Trade (February, 1978)
Author: S. L. Mayer
Amazon base price: $12.95
Average review score:

Upward Spiral
This book consists of a collection of Signal magazine articles from the period of WW2 when Germany was undefeated.

Germany had conquered Poland in two weeks. Next, they secured all of northern Europe, Belguim, Holland and France in approximately six weeks. In the spring of 1941, they conducted a pre-emptive strike against the Soviet Armies massed on their eastern border (according to the book "Ice Breaker") two weeks before the Soviets were to attack. At the time, it appeared that Germany was going to be victorious on all fronts.

The German equilivalent to "Life" and "Look" magazines was "Signal". It was printed in about nineteen languages for distribution throughout all of the countries that Germany controlled. The English version was printed for the residents of the English Channel Islands which had been captured by Germany early in the war.

No WW2 library would be complete without this excellent set of books on what the war was like from a German perspective.

AWESOME HEART-TOUHCHING BOOK
I absolutely cried when I read of how she watched the terrible explosion. My heart, too, was in pain. I went through it with her and as the book progressed, I too was healed. 5 stars, A+++
