Distracting, Disturbing, Truthful
Overdone sci-fi pictures, but overall a good idea for a story. I really didn't like the way it was written, but the plot of "evil aliens take over brains to view on televisions" is kind of interesting. Read this book if you can get a hold of it from a library, but I wouldn't spend any money on it.

A must-have for any Jayhawk basketball fan.
The rich tradition and history of Kansas basketball is captured in this book. If you are a fan of Kansas basketball, the book is a "must-have." Many of the stories I had heard from my father and grandfather, both KU basketball fans, were rekindled in reading this book. And, many of my own memories, which had grown hazy as the years past, were revitalized by reading this history.

The Professor is In and Class Has Begun
Chris Potholm has the best life of any academic I know. He has a palatial office in the tower of Hubbard Hall at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine; he has an incredibly successful political consulting and polling business; he is married to a bright, attractive and unbelieveably understanding wife; he has been in or around the center of political life in Maine for the past 30 or so years; he has written prolifically, not only about politics in Maine, but about the political systems of Africa; he is a registered Maine Guide and he is ten times smarter than anyone thinks and most people think he is pretty damn smart. Now, you don't get much of all that background from reading this book which is basically a compilation of Sunday columns he has written for the Lewiston Sun-Journal. You get that from knowing the man which I have had the great good fortune to have done, for most of the last 30 years. In this book, he gives us a thumb nail sketch of his analysis of the various aspects of this thing we all enjoy, Democracy. He does it an a very insightful and entertaining way. It will mean a bit more to those who have been in Maine during the events he recounts, but there is still plenty here for any student of politics. Other than his wife or the sight of an eight point deer in his sights, nothing gets Potholm's juices running like politics. I would love to have taken classes from him, but I have had the next best thing. I have watched him work from the inside which is an education in itself. Get a glimpse of what makes him tick in this book. He will make you think, he will make you laugh and best of all, he will get you involved.

Nice Addition to my Spitfire Library!
Great information on many models. I would prefer more information on the 1500 model for my personal use, however, there is a wealth of information here regarding the heritage of the Spitfire from the discussions on the Herald and Vitesse.

Almost got it right
This is a good basic book on the resto of the TR2-3B series. Although I was disappointed in the lack of detail on the electrical system, carbs, brake lines, fuel lines and so forth. The sticklers to restoring these cars is getting the details right and this has like a 10,000 ft overview rather than a detailed coverage. One other glaring note, there are too many references to the TR4 car in this book. The author should have chosen to write one book at a time rather than attempt to put out 2 book on the TR2-3B and the TR4 series. It show because of the constant use of illustrations and comparisons of the TR2-3B to the TR4, this does not help in the restoration of this car.

A Life of William Inge: The Strains of Triumph

Very effective portrait painting
Within reading the first few pages of this well researched and illuminating biography of one of America's finest playwrights, it becomes obvious that author Ralph Voss is first and formost a major fan of William Inge, the bard of Kansas. That is always a prerequisite for embarking on a biographical journey. However, Voss' fandom does get in his way frequently as he unsuccessfully confuses is goal: is he a fan or a critic. This is really a small matter as the book does provide a fascinating insight into William Inge, a man whose private nature makes him a shadowy enigma at best.

Even almost thirty years after his death, Voss (writing in 1988), finds it very difficult to focus on Inge's personal life. The book doesn't provide as effective an insight into the writing process or into the man's inter workings as say Leverich's recent biography of Tennessee Williams has. This is due in no small part to the simple but important fact most of Inge's surviving friends and family didn't really know him.

This leaves Voss with little choice but to focus on the work.

Voss makes it apparent that reading a biography of Inge is ultimately anti climatic as the thin layer of fiction in his work barely covers its ultimately autobiographical quality. Anyone who has read, watched or produced Inge's work will immediately recognize the forms, characters and language and situations relfected in his life. Voss proves most successful in drawing, enhancing and exploring those connections. This holds especially as the older, increasingly cynical and bitter Inge attempts to answer his critics (especially Robert Brustein!) and create plays reflective of the volatile 1960's and early 1970's. His latter plays failed perhaps because Inge tried to write outside of his strengths. Watching his bittersweet portraits of midwestern life crumble to dark and violent scenes of depravity really does fill the reader with a sense of sadness and loss. William Inge, like many great artists, decomposed in front of an audience.

Voss does admit that perhaps while Inge was not a great playwright in the sense he did not revolutionize the form as Brecht, Beckett, Odets, Williams, Miller and Wilder did, he did possess an uncanny ability to capture realistic dialouge.

Inge's sepia toned portraits of midwestern manners and life have been overshadowed by the canon of Williams, Miller and O'Neil to be sure. Voss makes the successful case that Inge stands as a proud equal to the more illuminary authors of America's rich dramatic tradition.

A fine read well worth the time and effort about a fine literary artist desperately in need of rediscovering. Even if it doesn't know whether it is a biography or critical evaluation.

Well-written, no references, duplicates catalog raisonne
This is a beautifully illustrated review of Monet's life, by one of the major scholars of Monet. It suffers as a scholarly source, however, because there are no citations of where quotes or information was obtained. And buyers beware: this is a reprint of Vol I of the 4 volume catolog raisonne--so if you have that set, don't buy it!

Mother of two from Iowa
I bought this book after hearing Carol Kent speak at a Mother's conference. It is very easy reading and provides you with short inspirational stories about Mother's. Bible verses are referenced for each individual story to find more inspiratation. I thoroughly enjoyed this light reading.
