When the Triumphs roared!!
I remember attending a vintage car rally organised by the VCCI in Bombay a year back. As I was strolling about camera in hand looking at all the old beauties, I heard the roar of what could only be a twin cylinder thumper. Even before I turned my heard towards the source of the sound my heart was beating faster and I knew that what I would see would be immensely and instantly desirable. Small wonder then that it turned out to be a gleaming red and white Triumph. The Triumph Bonneville caused a similar reaction when it landed on the American shore in 1959. As a matter of fact it started a revolution that would define sportbike performance over the coming decade. Triumph: Bonneville and TR6 by Timothy Remus retraces the evolution of this icon that started of as a 30-horsepower bike and evolved to a 60-horse power screamer. With a delightful number of stunning pictures that will have you wishing you had one of these bikes, the book captures the bike at each step of its developmental journey. There's the 1959 model, the watershed TT bikes and the top-of-the-line 1970 model. The book with its 120 plus photographs and an authoritative text bring the Triumph Bonneville and TR6 back to life. If you are the kind of person who drools over gleaming chrome and the thumpy roar that Triumphs are all about this book is definitely for you.

Great flow, wonderful history and terrific pictures
The history on each bike discribed in the book is quite informative. The bikes we were specifically interested in are the Bonnevilles and there is no shortage of great pictures and descriptions. There are some great examples of restorations that go beyond showroom quality. We are especially fond of the 1977 Silver Jubilee edition.

The Triumph of Democracy in Spain

A fine review of Post-Franco Spain
Paul Preston's study of Spain's year of transition following the death of Franco is extremely useful to understand the triumph of democracy in a country with little previous experience in liberty. A highly recommendable book for anybody interested in comtemporary Spanish history or for political scientists interested in transitions from authoritarian rule to democratic rule.

Other than the title...
This is an excellent, easy to read history of the heredity-environment controversy. The amount of details and research is impressive and would be very helpful to anyone doing a study on the subject (I was just reading it out of interest). Other than the odd title--the evolution controversy is virtually untouched in this book--this book delivers what it promises and more.

An Architectural Reformation
Complex, tense, and diffuse, the art of the Baroque period remains for much of the English speaking world an unknown and somehow unsettling style. Such reactions shouldn't be unexpected; the style is still quite new in comparison to the Gothic and Greek Classicism. But just being a recent period doesn't fully account for society's often puzzled reactions: the Baroque is genuinely a highly inventive and original epoch, and as such, it's concepts cannot casually grasped. The current exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and the accompanying catalogue--both carefully organized by Henry A. Millon--have taken long strides toward clarifying the principles underlying the architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries. The catalogues text and photography support one of the strengths of the exhibit: its carefully and fully crafted models. These models succinctly brings out the powerfully sculptural quality of this architecture. Dr. Millon's catalogue also helps bring to light the architecture of Central and Eastern Europe, an area whose cultural richness is only now becoming clear to the American audience.

Great book on the history of the Triumph Spitfire and GT6
A very good book, with lots of details I had not found elsewhere about the history and evolution of the Triumph Spitfire and GT6. Great details about the design, reasons for changes made and not made, and the effects of American Legislation forced on Britsh Leyland during the nineteen-seventies. There are plenty of pictures to please the eyes of any Triumph afficionado, but I wish there had been more in color. The details about custom updates and modifications were particularly interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Recommended!

Sweeping array of anecdotes and analyses
Short, well-categorized case studies from serious analysts are presented in this extensive book as a sort of beginner's manual for a new president. Any student of executive politics, or american politics in general, will find this book useful for its lessons and as a catalyst for further study. The assessments are presented seriously and soberly, but do not belabor points and weigh the reader down with pedantry.

Developing a coherent first "Hundred Days," managing Congressional relations, approaching foreign policy and foreign relations, developing economic policies, forming political consensus, and not enmiring the presidency in disputes to the detriment of core goals, are all topics addressed by categories. Different presidencies from FDR on are used in the case studies to ascertain success and/or failure.

A rare look at the man behind the motorcycles
Respected and feared, Edward Turner was the heart of Triumph for more than three decades. He designed the quintessential British bike and ruled the industry with an imposing, stern personality. But behind the public figure was a family man, a gifted engineer, and a very private person. Clew brings him out for the first time, in an obviously reverential book. While he is not as critical of Turner as many of his contemporaries, Clew is not an apologist either. He gives us a fascinating look at the many sides of Edward Turner most of us will never know. And he does it with enough good photos of classic bikes that even Turner's critics will want this book!

Great (Censored) Holiday Gift!
This book is so much fun. It's a perfect gift idea for those diehard Ozzie-ites on your gift list, especially those under 18. The book contains no new revelations and nothing the media has not bombarded us with already, but it's all in one fun package. It captures much of the essence of the show, and in a fast, (bleep) format that's sure to please all of the Osbournes' bleeping fans. A must-have!

Excellent urban history
I read this book in college. It is a standard for Urban Planning majors. The book describes the battles fought in American cities, principally New York, to establish municipal services like sewers, water supplies, public buildings, docks, transportation, food markets, etc. The writing is a little dry (it is an academic text), but the drama of the times is fascinating and the subject matter gives a unique and fascinating glimpse of life 100 years ago. The book is food for thought for today's urban planners, politicians, residents, etc. If you like this sort of thing, I highly recommend the book.
