great scientifically based book for everyone
This book explores the healing aspects of faith in terms of scientific evidence. As the director of Duke University's Center for the Study of Religion/Spirituality and Health, the author, Dr. Harold Koenig, has become an expert in this discipline and shares everything he has learned in this very fascinating and informative book. Through his medical background and through fifteen years of dedicated research and after over 50 research studies Koenig provides a strong argument for the healing power of faith. From the very start, it is made clear that this is not a book claiming the miracles of God but rather is a book "concerned with concrete data" to "investigate the therapeutic or healing power of people's religious faith." Some of the findings from this data are that people who have a strong faith have healthier lifestyles possibly due to religions encouragement of proper and healthy conduct. Religious people also cope well with stress, are less likely to be depressed and hospitalized than their non-religious counterparts, have a stronger immune system, and live longer. Other important research, conducted by people other than Koenig's team, are included in this book as well. This book is quite comprehensive in its review of all the literature out there on the healing power of faith.

The book is filled with poignant personal stories that help illustrate the scientific findings. The stories are of depression, alcoholism, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other medical conditions. One such story is of Morty, a man who had been walking around with an blood alcohol level of 3.5. Morty was delivered to a detoxication unit where he stopped drinking on the first day of arrival and had an almost painless physical withdrawal from alcohol because he believed in the grace of God. Each story is as heartwarming and as inspiring as the one before. I loved how these stories were so smoothly used in adjunct with the scientific findings. It is definitely an effective blend of real life to which we all can relate and science from which we all can learn.

Another great thing about this book is that at the very end it offers suggestions to how one can benefit from the Power of faith. It is separated into three different parts: 1) if you are already religious, 2) if you are not religious, and 3) if you simply are not yet ready to consider religion. This is very nice because it offers suggestions for everyone not only those who are religious and are already benefiting.

A definite plus to this book is that is it easy reading. Although it deals with real scientific research the entire book is very readable. One does not get bored with scientific jargon. In fact the book is very engaging and I finished it in one night. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who is interested in this subject. We all can learn from it, religious people and atheists alike.

Heart warming book
Heart warming book that beautifully combines scientific data with personal stories. Koenig writes well, keeps your interest, and brings medical research to an understandable level. His point is clear--faith is good for your health.

Moving and informative
A fascinating book that kept my attention throughout. Nice blend of personal stories that illustrate some remarkable research. Recommend highly.

This IS The Summation of All Self Help Books
I hope that you pick up this book. In its pages are wealth more immense than you can possibly imagine.

Guaranteed to direct your spiritual focus.
This book is easy to read and understand. For years I have gone to spiritual direction and this book has hit the nail on the head as far as getting you focused on the divine and not your own ego-wants. It's a step by step look at that process of spiritual growth that is so wanting and yet so difficult sometimes. Great book!! I've recommended it to everyone and want to carry it in my Catholic bookstore. Get it and grow spiritually!

Sheen's book leads to new affection for an examined life.
I came to this book prepared to be unmoved by it's overly doctrinal approach to modernity and it's trappings - psychological and otherwise. I was surprised, however, when I found myself examining my life in new and profound ways. I say profound because Fulton's reflections go to the very heart of how we live. I find myself choosing my words more carefully, living more reflectively. And what more can I expect of a book...especially one picked up with such (initial) distaste?

Patton: Ordeal and Triumph
Amazon managed to obtain me an out of print copy, without which I would not be able to write this review. This book is an excellent exposition of George Patton the warrior and General. There is no doubt that had his and Bradley's roles been reversed that the war in Europe would have finished months earlier than it did. The failure to close the Falaise gap and the subsequent german escape is an example of indecision by both Eisenhower and Bradley. I have read three books on Patton and a Soldiers Story by Bradley - Patton was the warrior - Patton was the leader - Patton was the difference. Thanks Amazon for the effort to find me a copy. I appreciate it. Regards, Tom

Must reading for anyone interested in WW II
Who can forget George C. Scott's incredible Oscar winning performance as Patton? Yet few people remember that the movie came mostly from this book and Omar Bradley's input. Patton was one of the most eccentric, brilliant, egotistical generals ever. This fine book takes you through his upbringing to his last days after the war. Farago is outstanding in his research and presentation. This is truly one of the greatest biographies ever written.

Excellent bio...well researched! Great read!
If you like war history, you will love this book. From battlefield plans and stratagies to personal thoughts, Patton was fascinating. Some great quotes and some strange tales....I highly recommend this book!

Resisting Reading Mandates: How to Triumph with the Truth

Great for practitioners
As a teacher of reading in a Central California high school, I am constantly bombarded with the mandates and "bad science" of the National Reading Panel. Dr. Garan's book empowered me to understand what is going on in the realm of state and federal reading mandates and how to combat the many distortions with the truth. The question/answer format makes the book very readable.
I devour professional books on reading, and this is one of the very best. Get this book and you will be able to "triumph with the truth."

Strong arguments against heavy phonics
Prof. Garan stunned the academic world recently with her brilliant critique of the National Reading Panel's report, which appeared in several prestigious journals, including the Phi Delta Kappan. The National Reading Panel summary claimed that intensive phonics was the true path for all readers from kindergarten to grade 6. Garan showed that this conclusion was not even consistent with the report's own data. Heavy phonics only really helps when children read regularly spelled words in isolation. It has very little effect when children read real texts. President Bush's reading plan is based on the National Reading Panel report; Garan's critique reveals important flaws in the report. Unlike the National Reading Panel report, Garan's book is very readable, very understandable. Those interested in more on this topic might also want to read recent books by Gerald Coles, such as Misreading Reading and Reading Lessons, Frank Smith's still classic book, Reading without Nonsense, and Ken Goodman's What's Whole about Whole Language.

Essential Reading
Elaine Garan has performed a great public service. Very readable and riveting, this short book reveals what happens when politicians put the fox in charge of the henhouse. In clear, cogent fashion Garan uses her formidable research skills to distinguish between fact and fabrication in the political mandate to muzzle teachers and force them to deliver reading instruction in a lockstep, fastfood format.

Every parent and grandparent who wants their children to love books must read this book.

Every teacher who wants to take back her classroom must read this book.

The Rise of Western Christendom: Triumph and Diversity 200-1000 Ad (Making of Europe)

A brilliant synthesis
Peter Brown, professor of History at Princeton University, has written an amazing work. While so many Western Civ courses gloss over the "Dark Ages," the Early Middle Ages are brilliantly illuminated by this book, which offers a panoramic view of early Christianity. It covers over 900 years, from the beginnings of Christainity in the Roman Empire to the conversion of Scandinavia. Brown focuses on the unique forms of Christainity that arose throughout the world, from the Celtic and Northumbrian Christianity centered on the Irish monestary of Iona, to the Nestorian Christianity in the dying Persian Empire. He discusses suscinctly the rise of Islam, and its initial relations with the well established Christian communities of the East. Brown writes with tremendous clarity and grace. Most importantly, he has a keen knack for capturing the spiritual world views of historical figures; the piety and passion of men like Gregory of Tours, the Emperor Justinian and St. Columba come brilliantly to life thanks to Brown's lively yet erudite prose. Invaluable to scholars, laypeople will find it highly readable and thuroughly edifying.

Unbearably brilliant
I just bought this book and will review it again later. I've read Brown on Augustine and am getting what I expect from this book: brilliant writing, brilliant thinking, brilliant scholarship. He turns you upside down and shakes all the change out of your pocket.

Great work
This is a great work that traces the development and movement of Christianity into Europe. A religion that started out in the middle east had, by the end of the work, come to be dominant more in northern Europe than in the middle east itself.

Brown is a very good writer and is able to very eloquently trace out the forces and personalities of the period as well as the theleologic discussions that often divided Byzantine and Latin interpretations of the religion.

While not an introductory work, any reader can benefit from reading this book. At best it will stimulate further interest in the period and reading other authors. At worst, the reader may require some maps and a copy of, "Who's Who in the Middle Ages"

Science, Money, and Politics: Political Triumph and Ethical Erosion

Mix three volatile reactive elements and you get a mess
There are a couple of things about this work by Greenberg that struck me as significant, and added to the fact that the book is very well written, it makes for a very compelling read. Even after many years of scientific journalism and working within the industry Greenberg says that the scientific enterprise makes him "feel like a stranger in a strange land." This is no idle boast by someone trying to tout his credentials as an objective observer and skeptic. This is in fact precisely the perspective that Greenberg uses throughout; this arms-length approach allows him to come up with some rather perceptive insights and useful recommendations. The second point of interest, and something for which the scientific community should be commended, is that generally this book has been quite favorably received. Many times when an "outsider" reports on some subject, the first, and oftentimes the only point, aggrieved professionals focus on is that he's not an "expert", or he's a "non-specialist". That doesn't seem to be the case with most of the commentary on this book from the scientific community. And make no mistake, there's enough damning evidence here about the volatile mix of SCIENCE, MONEY, AND POLITICS and the resulting mess of "Political Triumph and Ethical Erosion", that it would be normal to expect self-defensive counter criticisms.

Greenberg traces the changing role of science and its relationship with politics, roughly since the period following WWII. Long gone is the era of the prominent presidential science advisors. Today it is money that dominates the scientific agenda. The chapter on the National Science Foundation (NSF) and its claim a few years ago that the country faced a shortage of tens of thousands of scientists is illustrative. Greenberg shows this lobbying effort for increased funds as a knowingly false issue pushed by a merger of institutional and academic interests. Greenberg quotes a US Office of Management & Budget Report which had this to say about scientists: "They are the quintessential special interest group..."

He has much to say on the inflated claims of many projects. Although he specifically mentions the aborted Superconducting Super Collider (SSC), it is clear he views more recent projects such as the Human Genome Project, and cloning, in the same light. Greenberg doesn't allow the book to end as a mere polemic though. He makes an interesting recommendation for the conversion of the NSF into a National Science, Engineering & Humanities Foundation. This is more in recognition of the need for a new "ethic" rather than as the desirability of conflating all knowledge to scientific methods as some scientists (E.O Wilson in CONSILIENCE) have recently called for.

Regardless of where you are in the sciences this book is sure to affect you. Many of the excesses and cases of influence and false claims are known about, and more importantly have already been condemned by well thinking professionals. Nevertheless by presenting it in such a readable format Greenberg will enjoy significant readership among the skeptical public. This at a time when science is engaged in the most far reaching issues for humanity, only means that scientists can expect more questions from an interested, and much better informed public.

By far the best work on this subject
This is the definitive book on this topic. The author has been reporting this subject for over 40 years and has personally interviewed most of the major players. Plenty of facts and figures but interestingly written. Neither "Gosh, how wonderful Science is" or an expose' of how tarnished Science is. Extremely objective and written by a man who knows as much or more about this subject as anyone around.Historians will use this as a reference for a long time.

Science for Sale?
I'm one of those who believes that we have far more to gain from good science than we have to lose. Nonetheless, Greenberg's book brought me up short. This is a dramatic, readable, well-documented, and shocking exposé of the dirty back-door means by which much support for science research is secured in this country. Greenberg cites example after example of how undeserving or questionable projects are funded while, presumably, more promising work goes begging because it lacks powerful patrons. Greenberg also argues that the whole system is corrupt because universities depend on grant overhead for operating budgets, while congressmen and -women want money for their districts, and various scientific disciplines want to increase their clout and standing. Greenberg clearly is very angry, and his anger stems from genuine outrage that an enterprise such as science, which is so important, and so powerful, has participated in making itself an often-sleazy political tool. I hope university administrators and all the federal officials responsible for science funding will read this book--the fault lies less with scientists individually than with the ways in which universities, the federal government, and scientific organizations see their self-interest.

Seeds of Hope: A Physician's Personal Triumph Over Prostate Cancer
Published in Hardcover by Acorn Publishing (August, 2000)
Authors: Michael A. Dorso, Michael D'Orso, and Michael A. Dorso M. D.
Amazon base price: $24.95

Highly Recommended for anyone with prostate cancer
This is an excellent book, written by a physician, but from the perspective of a patient considering the many options available for prostate cancer treatment. It is particularly beneficial in describing the details of the seed implant treatment, and the impact of this disease on spouse and family. It should be read by every man who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer before a treatment choice is made.

Priceless
This is an essential source of information if you are diagnosed with prostate cancer. This has certainly been a real eye-opener for me, here is a doctor, who suddenly finds himself as a patient. So well written, so personal, and yet so easily understood, none of the "latin" that we sometimes get from doctors, you feel as though you are actually sitting there with him, or even in his brain. He shares ALL his worries, frustrations, anxieties, relief's and his joys too as he moves forward in his goal to be truly the master of his own destiny. I highly recommend this book, to anyone who is having to cope/deal with prostate cancer. Doctor's too, cancer affects so many people, this book can even give you the professional a lot of insight into patients perspectives. BUY it NOW!

Two Thumbs Up!
A great book! Prostate cancer, and possible treatments, are not subjects that are easy to explain. However Dr. Dorso is able through his position as not only a physician, but also a patient, to explain possible cancer treatment options in a clear and understandable way. His story is personal and compassionate. Thoughout the book I found his experience became my experience. His sincerity and authenticity shine throughout. "Seeds of Hope" is definitely a must read for anyone who has cancer or who knows someone that has cancer. If I were a doctor I would prescribe it!

Fight the Fight of Faith!
This book was so encouraging to my faith I cried during many parts of it. I was so blessed by Betty's perseverance even in severe pain and with the appearances of recurrences to the cancer. Her candid stories of how much the circumstances threatned to consume her faith--but didn't--were inspiring. We truly cannot walk by what we see, but must walk by faith! A great book for anyone who believes in divine healing. My advice: Read it now before the enemy hits!

Truly Anointed!
Unfortunately I read Dr. Betty's book after my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. But I'm glad I did. This book is full of information for anyone who is going through treatments with cancer or his/her loved ones. I truly enjoyed the scriptures and her candid telling of her triumph through the fire and water. I praise God for Dr. Betty Price and my sister's healing. May God continue to bless the Price family.

Through the Fire and Through the Water
This is one of the best book I have read on someone's experience with cancer. What I like about the book was the medical doctor explanation of what cancer is. The author's experience was real and truthful. This book will help you not only to have faith, but also tells you what to expect. So many times cancer patient don't know what to expect or even the questions to ask. The book is well written and walks you through a step by step process.

Anna's beloved mistress Katrina has finally found the love of her life... now she and her new husband are expecting a baby. But will the little one be born into a home of laughter and joy... or to the wrecked ruinage of a once prosperous family?

A must-read for every lover of history and adventure!

Continuous great work
Pella and Phillips never seem to disappoint with this series. I recommend all seven books with five stars.

Passion, Politics, and Prejudice!
I found this book to be a wonderful continuance of the Russian saga. At first I was upset about Princess Katrina, but it really turns out for the best. Anna and Sergei raise Mariana to have the wonderful blended qualities of them both. Dimitri leaves to find the measure of the man he never would own up to be. And we leave them again, in a humble cottage in Katyk, right where we started.
