The Best I've Read
In Trials and Triumphs, author Sorah Shapiro tastefully relates sixteen timeless stories from East and West describing the plight of the Jewish people in their various and varied countries of exile during the diverse periods of the nation's history.
In her beautiful style, the author transports the reader to years gone by into the life of the east European shtetl and the Spanish town, to their problems and dilemmas, to their ingenuity in the face of adversity and to their quiet heroism. By far more than parting the curtains and permitting the reader to peer into the lives of the people, the stories inspire and enrich the lives of today.

The characters in this book are true heroes, like "Yossele the Yeshiva Bochur" whose courage and quick thinking thwarted
the attempt by the "snatchers" of Czar Nicholas I in 1825 to kidnap Jewish boys for a lifetime of service in the
Russian Army -- and, of course, an abandonment of their Jewish heritage.
Or like Ephraim Mendoza in "A Spanish Chanukah," whose parents were burned to death in 15th century Spain
for the crime of being secret Jews, Marranos. The young boy was taken by the church and brainwashed into
thinking his parents were Christians who had been killed for helping Jews.
But eventually, he discovers the truth and leads his sister, cousins, uncle and aunt out of Spain to freedom.
These and many more inspirational stories and values of high priority in Jewish living await
the reader. In the words of the author, "as we watch each of them (the heroes of the stories)
confront and cope with his dilemma, we gain strength and are inspired by the faith and hope that
can see a person through even the worst of times."

How This Book Helps You Keep Your Sanity After 9/11
Since 9/11, people have been talking about how the event changed the world in general and their lives in particular. For many, it did not reinforce their faith but left them with doubts about life, why the attack occurred and their place in the scheme of things. They became more introspective, searching for answers, for strength and inspiration, for ideals to live by, for reassurance that there is no need to fear, that good will finally prevail.
Along comes a tiny book and takes the whole burden upon
its shoulders. A pocket-size volume, Trials and Triumphs is packed with the tools we need to maintain our sanity
and reinforce our faith in this time of global crisis and uncertainty - inspiration, hope, patience, wisdom, guidance and even laughs. All of this comes to the fore in sixteen stories
that encompass much of the Jewish experience from 18th century England and Ukraine to 19th century Russia, Poland, Spain, the Ottoman Empire - and of course to Nazi-controlled Europe. In each vignette, the protagonist grapples with doubts and challenges which he ultimately overcomes and becomes a spiritual hero. The characters instill in us the resources to deal with our own inner selves, the strength of character and strong faith to think bigger, try harder and move onward.
People from all walks of life, the simple, the great and the in-between, are the heroes who stand alone and fearless in the face of danger or despair. Suffering personal sacrifice
to meet a challenge or act on their Torah convictions, they focus on the important values, like saving lives, comforting the afflicted and living as honorable Torah Jews. Ultimately, they reap their proper reward for their true love of the Creator.
In one of the stories, "Earrings from Mecca," Zalman the tailor risks his life to stave off Moslem attacks against the Jews. Before interceding with the Sultana, he offers up a
prayer to the One Above, "Ribono Shel Olom," he says, "You know that I am just a simple Jew, a humble tailor. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to be a scholar. My parents were poor, and when I was eleven I had to become the family bread winner. But my intention has always been to do Your will...I am afraid my chances are slim unless You help me, as You are the source of all wisdom and all salvation." His prayer was answered.
In "Double-Edged Sword," the king commands Leibel to behead a soldier with his sword. Leibel prays to the One Above and says, "Ribono Shel Olom, You know that I never committed murder, and I will not do so now. You know that my faith in You and in Your holy Torah has never wavered, and that I always accept life's circumstances lovingly, as we are required to do...." His prayer was answered.
In addition to stirring the spirit and instilling us with virtues and lasting faith, the book allows us a glimpse into a bygone generation, into the psyche of people whose every
moment was permeated with spirituality - with genuine Judaism.
Just as she did after 9/11 with her best-seller City on Fire, the author has brought us comfort and strength in her new book, Trials and Triumphs. Her stories enrich us and help us triumph over our own trials.

Why I Loved Trials and Triumphs
Is there any greater pleasure for the dedicated reader than to curl up with a book of stories that not only entertain but also inspire? I'm talking about the kind of stories that keep you turning the pages in an avid desire to see how it all turns out, while at the same time quietly depositing their timely messages to carry away with you. It is an imaginative banquet, fully matched by a lingering, reflective aftertaste. A delight for the mind and a feast for the soul.

Sorah Shapiro's little gem, Trials and Triumphs, performs this trick, and very neatly,
too. The pocket-sized compendium will put a new gloss on old values, and buff up a faith
that may have grown a trifle stale. It's also, simply put, a great read.

Though the tales are historical, they bear a definite relevance for contemporary
times. In The Double-Edged Sword, for instance, a powerful king sets out to find one truly
contented man. When he finds him - and when we read about Leibel's ability to find joy in

whatever Hashem decrees, though he is put to the test again and again - I found myself
wondering why I can't be that way. Leibel makes it seem easy... In the rush-and-tumble of
our lives, we can lose sight of the things we should be aspiring to. The shining examples
of character and faith on these pages --Yossele's courage in the face of hot-headed
Russian soldiers, a Marrano family's desperate clinging to the faith of their fathers, a pious
couple's unwavering belief in their rebbe - are there to remind us.

One of my favorites was Earrings from Mecca, which brought to vivid life the dangers
and dilemmas of Jewry under Muslim rule. A wicked imam's anti-Semitic initiative provides
a humble tailor with the chance to play hero, and to surprise and delight the reader with his
ingenious plan to (literally) catch the Sultana's ear for the benefit of his fellow Jews.

As the subtitle indicates, these stories are timeless. The author's use of descriptive
language and her tightly-woven narrative style evokes seasons and feelings that will
capture the reader's heart in any day and age.

I know they did mine.

Penny Harrington belongs in the Women's Hall of Fame!
When I read Penny's profile in "TOP COPS" by Marion Gold, I wanted to know more about this courageous lady. Her autobiography is filled with all the excitement, tragedy, and even suspense that great fiction is made from - but her story is TRUE. I take my hat off to Penny and salute her for standing up to injustice and for setting an example for all women in law enforcement - in fact, for all women who face discrimination and harassment in the workplace. Thank you Penny, for having the guts to tell the world what happened to you, and how you succeeded against the odds.

Penny Harrington is the epitome of women in law enforcement.
Penny's dauntless frays to the pinnacle of her career instituted many changes in policing. She is a remarkable woman who stands by her convictions and her word, while always exhibiting incredible ethical and moral values. Women today still face many barriers in law enforcement. Penny has instilled the strength and courage in many of us to help fight those barriers and help make change for all women. She is not only an inspiration to all in law enforcement, but also to all who want to do the right thing!

Penny Harrington¿s book is an inspiration to all.
Penny Harrington's book is an inspiration, not only for women in law enforcement, but also for anyone in any profession. Her battles with discrimination, inequities, and bureaucratic red tape, while maintaining high ethical and moral standards, are very refreshing. She exemplifies what all law enforcement officers should strive to be!

The Reality...
Meticuously researched and documented essays detail the obvious conservative bias of the media as they continue to do the dirty work of the elites. Good for those misguided individuals who continue to believe the nonsense that the media is dominated by liberals (the same media that refuses to cover NAFTA, GATT, WTO, the racist War on Drugs, health care for the rich, the death penalty, etc., but lived for the last 6 years off the political "scandals" of the most effective Republican president in the last 50 years- Mr. Clinton). A must for the open-minded and progressive of this country.

Insightful
Edward Herman deserves equal ranking with other great debunkers of our day. His style is more academic than say, Chomsky or Parenti, but he achieves genuine depth even in the short space compiled in the book. This is done by locating pivotal points in the topic and developing them with insight and fact, as exemplified in a devastating analysis of Milton Friedman and the Chicago school of economics, a chief source of neo-liberal theory.

Though many topical issues are discussed, most center around globalism and the emerging world of unrestrained capital. Though all sections have merit, those adressing economics, and media are strongest. Not only are the likes of a Friedman debunked, but so are major defects in the work of such lesser lights as Peter Passell and his Limbaugh-like anti-environmentalism. Particularly useful is the author's discussion of how the science of economics has been politicized, with the Nobel prize as a prime example. Also noteworthy: A model of development for Third World countries, i.e. basic needs/ independence model, that would prioritize domestic investment over the dependency brand required by western interests. Apologists for the global power grab like to pretend neo-liberalism is the only framework left to choose from. Seldom mentioned are those killer technologies from the sky that make sure no alternatives challenge "free trade" and the dominant class lurking behind it.

The sections on media's role in carrying out state propaganda are noteworthy for a balanced and nimble approach. Herman shrewdly points out the face-saving features that make a democratic media appear credible in the eyes of many. Yet, as he shows too, this is only a facade. For behind it a very effective system of decentralized censorship operates, the major mechanisms of which the book spells out. It should be added that this current system - and system it is - has evolved over time, without central direction or guiding blueprint, into perhaps the most effective form of public manipulation in history. Despite all, a general public that is aware of vested interests, senses this same media is not to be trusted. But the complex mechanisms which would validate such cynicism are rarely spelled out or popularly understood, so the disconnect continues. Compounding this is a political rightwing that deflects popular doubts onto a supposed liberal bias in reporting, a truly Orwellian twist. Herman's hope for the future lies in a burgeoning civic sector media, free from private and public sector warps.

All in all, this is an excellent purchase for the serious reader, particularly for those inclined by years of indoctrination into supposing that America and America Inc. are the same thing.

Absolutely amazing book
Gives amazing insight into the reality of America from the educational institutions to foreign policy. The analysis and examples in the book are amazing. A must have for anyone intersted in humanity. Herman at his best.

Impressive captivation of the workings of providence
I was initially reserved in my approach to the book 'cos I thought it would be boring and would contain too much theology.
I was proven wrong. I could see the interplay of man and God in shaping our history and now fully understand that indeed "He works all things after the counsel of his own will". I was taken with the literary style that I could not put it down desiring to find out what would happen next to Luther. It is awesome to know that Omniscience wields Omnipotence to achieve the counsel of the Omnipresent God.

Excellent, readable, interesting like all D'Aubigne's works
I have read this book under separate title, and D'Aubigne presents in it a wonderful picture of Luther the man, from the perspective of an author who knows Luther's Lord. Much more readable than Bainton's work, and with a touch of the older style of writing that has now been lost.

More detail than I had ever known about Luther (pt 1)
This is a very good book about Martin Luther. Before I read this book, I did not know what he wrote his theses about, but now I know he wrote it to condemn the evil sale of indulgences.

Triumph over Grief

Faith and Love Triumph
Joyce Williams offers a strong, courageous story that confirms what so many of us want to believe - faith and love will see you through even the greatest pain. While reading this book, the question always present is "Why was one family, especially one mother, dealt so much tragedy and pain?" By books' end, the question answered is "How do you deal with such adversity?"
Mrs. Williams shares how her faith in God, and the constant love of family and friends gave strength and comfort at the hardest times. This is a book you should always have by your side. It offers comfort and reassurance to each of us when we have a loss; it offers guidance on the importance of extending love to those who are in need. God bless you, Joyce.

Hope for the bereaved
A lovely and poignant story that brought tears to my eyes.Recommended by my daughter who was also touched by this story. A wonderful read for anyone dealing with the loss of loved ones. Particularly pertinent for clergy.

Loss, Grief, Hope!
Joyce Williams' account of her encounter with grief in her own life may appear unbelievable at first. It seems unreal that one single family could be touched with such pain and come out of it triumphantly! As you read her account of loss after loss in the span of over twenty years you sense all along a strength that is far beyond human, and it is; because it is not humanly possible to endure such painful challenges without an unequally strong and amazing faith. Joyce re-defines the meaning of possible and impossible, and also re-defines the meaning of faith because she lives her faith every day with amazing courage. She takes the challenges head on, and she asks her God to carry her when she can't possibly take any more steps on her own. To anyone who has ever suffered the loss of a spouse, a child, a grandchild, a parent, or a friend this book will be inspiring and uplifting.

A must-have book!
I have two copies of this manual, one to take with me in my car, and one to read at night. Great reference, great photos.

An 8-months project from a mechanically inept idiot
When I was a teenager I watched the movie 'Ferris Bueller's Day off'; it was then I wished to own a vintage convertible. I ended up with not the Ferrari as in the movie but with a very stylish sports convertible Triumph Spitfire (1969). One sunny summer afternoon I was zipping through the windy roads of Big Basin California and it was there I experienced a disaster. Regrettably I was warned about this from a few mature friends and colleagues but I just failed to acknowledge it; the warning was breakdown do happen. With smoke blowing from the engine it was a sign for a bad news. My most capitalistic mechanic quoted me a maximum price for which I could have almost gotten another one of these mobile. I had a hard choice to either cut my losses and walk away or somehow get it fixed. My many memories spent in the car along with my childhood dream prevented the former action. My only choice was to get my hands greasy. Well that was the easy part; my minor limitation was that my
knowledge about working of the car was limited to three steps 1.Put keys in ignition and start the engine. 2. Something happens 3. Wheels rotate and car moves. Very simplistic I agree; but I needed more understanding in step 2. Something happens. So I searched around and I came across this bible for dummies in car repair. Over the last 8 months I have spent much of my free time under the hood and getting my hands dirty; my guide is this 300 pages manual. I have learnt immensely from it and am more aware of the mechanics of the car; I (surprised myself) was able to dismantle the engine diagnose the cause correct it and put it back together.
If you interested I found that I was running low on radiator fluid due to a hose leak; the car was overheating which caused the pistons to blow up. The machinist did a fine job in replacing the pistons and I had them oversized which adds more firepower to the engine. I have the car running but it needs minor adjustments on timing. My goal is to make this a high performance car and race with it. In my to-do list I intend to have high performance exhaust system; Side-Draft Carburetor; and an Electrical distributor, all this will add to the horsepower. I highly recommend this book to anyone still afraid of working on cars. The illustrations along with the text will guide you very comfortably and answer all the questions that may arise

Best spent money on your Triumph
A must have. The book provides all the typical Haynes information and is an invaluable assest in repair and service. It provides full and detailed descriptions on inspecting, tune-ups, and rebuilding all parts of the car from the electrical system to the carberators. The book good has many details about emissions controls, but could use more.

Inspiring and enlightening with a sense of humor
A truly inspiring book and ultimately a practical lesson about the steps to recovery from a horrendous accident. Medical professionals can learn much from this, the patient's point of view.

Marsha is an inspiration!
For anyone who has been in a serious accident, or any friend or family member of an accident victim.

Marsha takes us step by step into the world of someone suddenly faced with multiple traumas, someone so terribly hurt by a runaway bus in a random crosswalk. Throughout her 88 day ordeal in three different hospitals, and throughout her subsequent recovery at home as well, she demonstrates a rare courage and spirit in the face of constant pain and despair. She triumphs over the depersonalized medical system by retaining her dignity and humanity during times when many other folks would just go mad. And, against all odds, she keeps her promise to herself and snow skis one year after the accident.

Truly an inspiration for anyone facing serious trauma recovery!

Excellent
This was an excellent book in it's own right but it helped me more than I can ever express. As an emergency worker suffering from depression and post-trauma stress for over a year, reading this book and finding so many similarities with what she went through after her ordeal, released something in me that I'd been resisting and helped me to decide to finally get the help that I need and deserve.

A real life heroine
She is an outstanding writer and this is a wonderful story. She's really a hero and I don't think she even realizes it. She talks of pulling passengers from a burning plane like it's no greater feat than going to the grocery store to buy a box of Cheerios -- all in a day's work type of thing. Wonderful book, wonderful woman. I'd like to meet her. I'm an EMT and am trained to save lives. She wasn't, but it made it seem so routine. As a life-long flight-attendant wanna-be, my hat's off to Sandy. There aren't many celebrities that I would have a desire to meet, but this lady --- I'd love to shake her hand. I also recommend reading "Hail Fire" by John Tielking, one of the survivoring passengers of this crash. It is his account of the events and is an excellent book. He also mentions Sandy's amazing actions on that fateful day.

Aslan's Triumph A Winner
An excellent adaptation for the final chapters of the Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe. My 5 year old carries the book around because of the beautiful illustrations.

Excellent illustrations, yet a bit graphic for younger viewe
I liked the way the story is condensed for young readers. This volume was a bit wordier than the preceding ones, however. Also, a couple of the illustrations were particularly graphic for young viewers - particularly the two pages covering the battle scene. It scared my 4 year old whom I was excited to introduce to Narnia and particularly Aslan. This volume also leaves one whetted for subsequent stories of the kings and queens of Cair Paravel. I eagerly await more editions in the "Deborah Maze" series.
