Napoleon
Published in Hardcover by Vergara Editor S.A. (November, 1991)
Author: Vincent Cronin

Fascinating
I have tried to read a lot of different books of napoleon and this is the only one I have finished because it kept me fascinated. His life is remarkable. Reading this book has made me want to read other biographies. I learned a lot of things. I recommend this book.

Even a Napoleon Hater will learn to appreciate Napoleon...
This book paints an incredibly accurate account of Napoleon's life from a close and intimate angle. Whilst it is obvious the author is no Napoleon-hater, he does not make up anecdotes to manipulate the reader (as many Napoleon-haters do in their biographies).

However, this book is no good for people who are interested in the military aspects of Napoleon. This book is more concentrated on the personal side of Napoleon. Although it mentions basic battle plans and overall strategy, that is not the purpose of the book. If you are truly interested in his army, I suggest you read "Napoleon and his Marshalls" and the Greenwood Military volume on The Napoleonic Wars.

Great read if you are interested in Napoleon
This biography keeps the reader's interest. While I remember little about Napoleon from high school history class, this book highlights Napoleon in an interesting way. Cronin writes well and picks out enough information to give you a good overview of Napoleon.

Easily, a biography on Napoleon can run volumes and they do. Cronin, however, presents Napoleon's early days on Corsica, his French military school days, his significant battles in Italy and Egypt, his reign in France, his march on Russia, his exile to Elba, his return to France and his final bannashment to the Island of St Helena, in an easy going manner.

According to Cronin, Napoleon is either loved or hated by biographers. While a reader doesn't need to know this, Cronin provides an analysis at the end of his book on primary sources about Napoleon and which, in his view, are credible. Based on this, Cronin appears to present a balanced view of Napoleon.

Integrity is the Key word in this Title
I have read many personal development books on the subject of Success and this one sums it all up for you. Vinny is an excellent author who has taken the time to make this book an enjoyable read. The chapters are short and too the point and he gets the message home. So far this book has changed my life for the better. Reading it gave me the courage to make some drastic changes in my life and I am forever indebted to him.

True passion from within
It's about time that a book has been written that helps people tap into the passions, gifts and skills they already possess. Mr. Roazzi provides procedures that help unleash these gifts to accomplish what your true desires are...not, what you're expected to be. Mr. Roazzi shows everyone that we have two lives: the life we're programmed to be, and the life we truly desire. I have spent many years helping people by starting with skills they already possess and love using, rather than learning to be something they're expected to be. It is at this level that lasting success is achieved.
If you want to learn how to succeed, be happy at what you succeed at, and have that success be a natural way of life, then this is a must read book.
I warn you though, if you really want success in your life, come prepared to be honest and get results.

a life-changer!
I'm very selective about what I read and not easily impressed. When I heard Vinny on NPR I knew I had to buy this book. I have recommended it numerous times already as one of the most important and helpful books I have ever read. This book shows how to be a successful person - not just businessman. It's principles are simple and timeless - and what is particularly great - really gleaned from what the author learned in recovery (a 12-step program). A reviewer said it was a good book, but without much practical help. That couldn't be further from the truth. This book was worth a $1000. seminar. It guided me and motivated me, and truly saved me when everything in my life was changing - including work. Thank you Vinny! You're da man!

Funny, moving, poignant... and fearless.
(Okay, I'm a bit older than eight, but the site wouldn't let me tell you my real age. National Security or something...) Thanks for the Mammogram is Bombeckian (as in Erma). Laura Jensen Walker not only tells us that laughter can heal, she shows us. Her ability to live on the bright side glimmers from each page and through her, we learn to face difficult facts: breast cancer strikes one in eight women, but 100% of their spouses. Yet we can choose our response to the disease; we can decide not to let it ruin our lives.

Alternately showing herself to be our big sister, best friend and cheerleader, Walker has, er, bared all in the higher interest of exposing the stigma associated with breast cancer for what it is: a killer.

But she doesn't stop there. Walker shares perhaps the most telling detail of all, that her own mother is a breast cancer survivor, and passed a steely will and hearty sense of humor on to her daughter. An inheritance that may have saved Laura's life. Discover that as one quote used in the book puts it, "Whoever is happy will make others happy too." (Anne Frank)

I'm decidedly not a crier, but I did cry through the chapter written by the author's husband. I recommend this read-it-all-in-one-sitting title for anyone with breasts.

Laughing through the Pain
"Almost everyone - whether it's your friend, neighbor, coworker, wife, mother, or sister ? has been touched by breast cancer. The cancer survivors I've talked to over the years say that what helped them through their ordeal was faith and often humor." ~Laura Jensen Walker

What is more healing than laughter when you are faced with a situation you can't control? Even science has shown the healing power of laughter. Cancer isn't funny, but somehow the author finds a way to heal through her own vibrant wit. Many of the chapters are rather serious until the end when she gives the punch line.

This is a book about courage, hope and humor. Laura Jensen Walker demonstrates her ability to face the challenge of cancer and fight it with faith, hope and "mild/laid back" humor.

I learned a lot about reconstruction, chemo and was amazed at how Laura's husband stood by her through the entire process.

"How to Lose Thirty Pounds in Thirty Days: The Chemo Diet Way. The original Slim-Fast liquid diet. (But not one I'd recommend.)" was an interesting chapter to be sure. This spells it all out, tells you what chemo is all about and it isn't fun especially if your nurse forgets to give you "zofran." Yes somehow Laura finds a way to appreciate the effects of rapid weight loss even when it is the result of chemo.

If you want to understand what a cancer survivor goes through, this is the book. I recently read "Knowing Stephanie" which I can also recommend for the detailed information and pictures.

The last chapter on what really matters was also quite inspirational.

A "Must Read" book when faced with breast cancer
This is an incredible book. Laura Jensen Walker has beautifully and sometimes humorously, written about her breast cancer journey. I read this book in the hospital following my breast cancer surgery (3/01) and have been very inspired by Laura's writing. This is the first book I loan out to others when they are first diagnosed. I highly recommend "Thanks For The Mammogram" !!

The VP Bible!
To me, Vincent Price was always the ultimate movie star. His best roles were always those of someone on the brink who was pushed over the edge into soul-crushed madness, best seen in "House of Wax" and the Corman Poe films. Williams describes each of Price's 100 feature films in detail, with the focus on Price's performance. Each entry also quotes contemporary reviews of the film and there is usually an anecdote or two from Price or a costar. Not only is Williams' text good, but the book is full of fantastic publicity photos, stills and advertising art that are treasures in and of themselves. Horror fans can discover some of Price's other roles, like his hilarious comic performance with Ronald Colman in "Champagne For Caesar" (Forget "Quiz Show", check that one out!) At the end of the book Ms. Williams states that she regrets that she didn't have space to cover Price's extensive work in radio, TV, and the theater. So, come on, let's have volume II! (Though we might want to conveniently overlook the "Love Boat" appearances...)

"Priceless" Pictures from an Actor's Life
Forget the biographical portion of this book - it's short and general, though sufficient to the purpose of what this volume really is, which is a celebration of Price's life and films.

What sells this book is the pictures. Gorgeous stills from all of Price's movies - and quite a few from his life and stage plays, as well - plentifully stuff this beautiful coffee-table offering, on every page. Each film is discussed briefly, along with notes on its place in Price's life and ouevre, and accompanied by comments from his directors, producers and co-stars, and even Price, himself. Each picture is worth a thousand words, and some of them are really remarkable - for instance, cartoon cells from characters Price voiced for Disney studios and Miramax (The Great Mouse Detective and Arabian Knight) and Hanna-Barbera's The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo. There are photos of him with famous seemingly unlikely latter-day admirers, like Alice Cooper. Caricatures and print-ads abound, such as Price selling Tuaca liqueur and Emba minks. Even his image on a long-forgotten Milton Bradley "Shrunken Head Apple Sculpture" kit is on display.

If you're a fan, or looking for a Christmas or birthday present for someone who is, you just couldn't beat the bargain of this book at twice the "price"!

Baby Catcher: Chronicles of a Modern Midwife
Published in Digital by Scribner ()
Author: Peggy Vincent
Amazon base price: $9.99

Liberating read for women, informative for men
After reading this book, I will never look at midwives, childbirth, or my body in the same way again. This honest, authoritative memoir, by a woman who started her career as an obstetrical nurse, liberates women from the embarrassment that starts in adolescence with a budding female anatomy.

In her memoir, she presents the miracle of birth and shouts aloud those things that some of our mothers could only whisper and blush about. Immersed in bodily fluids up to her elbows, Peggy checks a cervix as naturally as a mechanic checks the oil. She demonstrates that, regardless of differences in race, belief, life style, or age, birth is a celebration of life. She welcomes each new soul and stands in awe at nature's magic--birth.

The writing is warm and welcoming, with a storyteller's enthusiasm and a savvy eye for the humor and irony of every situation. Peggy crafts a must-read for every woman who ever thought about childbirth. Men will discover...they'll gain insight into the intimate world of women and the men who stand with them. A truly strong debut book that fills a remarkably empty niche on the bookshelf....

A brilliant, moving, entertaining view of a midwife's life!
Thank you, Peggy Vincent! When I began reading this book, I could not put it down. As a midwife myself, I realized the amazing similarities that are so common to all midwives - especially the chapter entitled "Mom as a Midwife". I read this chapter to my seven year old daughter, and she loved it. I was so deeply engaged in this book that my family was left without my presence, and I found myself praying that I didn't have to leave for a birth just so I could complete this amazing book. Needless to say, I finished it within a day. Her stories of birth are empowering, sometimes hilarious, emotionally riveting, and so true. I cannot recommend this book enough - for anyone that is interested in midwifery, for those who appreciate the beauty and normalcy of birth, and for those who are working to make a change through gentle births. Rah! Rah! Peggy! Wonderful work!

If all deliveries could be natural and peaceful
This book was on my mind, ever since I was aware of its creation. Reading it took priority for the few days it took to complete it. I am an OB Nurse in an upstate New York Hospital, and a avid proponent of a natural, peaceful childbirth. Reading about the experiences Peggy had as a Mid-wife, only solidified my convictions that this experience can be as wonderful as it was designed to be if it is allowed....and this can be done only by very special people.
Since I have read the book, I haven't stopped talking about it to my co-workers. In a very short time, they will be hooked too! It takes special people, and their families to really appreciate the "Birth Experience"....especially when it involves that "special pizza" and the uniqueness of that situation.
What I liked best about the book, is the Oh so spiritualness of bringing a baby into the world. How Peggy captured the wonderful journey of the mother and baby that sometimes can be so solitary, and beautiful, if the woman is allowed to do what is natural.
This book is a must read for any woman, man, child who has been gifted with the desire to share the world with the inhabitants of those who LOVE childbirth!

Most poems fall short
I first came across Sylvia Plath in an anthology of modern poetry. Her poems "Daddy" and "Lady Lazarus" blew me away. The former may well be, in my opinion, the best poem ever written by a woman, and one of the five best written by anyone in the last two centuries. Buying this book, I expected more of the same. Unfortunately, I found most of her early work to be dissapointingly typical. The reason Plath is so controversial is that her greatness is linked inextricably to her darkness. Before the latter manifested during her divorce and subsequent depression, there just wasn't that much to her. In other words, much of her early poetry is that of a reasonably intelligent woman- entertaining, even a little intriguing, but lacking the fury of "Lady Lazarus", the darkness of "A Birthday Present", or the fatalistic beauty of "Ariel". And while there are some glimmers of the genius that is to come (The Colossus, I Am Vertical), they aren't many. My advice to any prospective reader is to save some time and money and pick up her collection "Ariel", which contains 90% of her essential work.

There is just something about Sylvia Plath
Gosh, I love Sylvia Plath's prose and poetry. I could read and reread some of her poems again and again. This is a great collection of her poems. I keep this book loose on my bookshelf when I feel like getting shivers up my spine before I go to sleep. There are some poems that I can just read and reread over and over again that make me feel... oh, mysterious, anxious, happy, perplexed... and Sylvia Plath is one of the poets who has written multiple poems that give me those feelings. Most people who like poetry are familiar with Mirror or Daddy, but there are other poems that people don't know about. I loved the sonnet "To Time" and the poem "Mystic." It is interesting to read her poems knowing what she was going through... reading the poems that coincide with certain events in her life, like her marriage to Ted Hughes, and poems that she wrote about her attempted suicides. I suggest this collection to anyone who is interested in this woman... and I also recommend that you read The Bell Jar as you read her poems, or maybe a few of her journal entries. Sylvia Plath is one of those poets that writes about herself, and knowing background on her life is crucial in understanding these poems. Well, you can decide for yourself.

Collection details Plath's formidable talent.
This book is the most complete collection of Sylvia Plath's poetry assembled in one volume. It is for this reason that it belongs almost as required reading, not just in American english programs, but in secondary schools everywhere. It's value lies in it's progression of a female poet and her journey towards finding her true voice. We see the early poems, methodically and skillfully written, shedding style after style of obvious influences through excercises of observation and perserverance. Through these verses, she explores and develops an intricate mythology; by the end, however, she has not lost us in her private world of symbolism and imagery, but enthralls us, heartbreakingly, through the mastery of her words. These last poems, that made up her final manuscript, are undisputedly some of the most moving and beautifully executed compositions of this past century. It is a wonderful book, one that forever changes the way the reader interprets art and the world around him that inspires it.

I Thought About You Today
I received your book, "I thought about you today" and your CD "chocolatecoveredcherries",
from my boyfriend Deronti Milam tonight. I could not put it down until I finished the last page. I thought that it was very interesting. On the back cover it states that "this book is for adult women". Men need to read it as well so they can learn what is pleasing to a woman. If more men and women catered to each other needs, there probably would be more committed ralationship in the world today. Keep up the good work and thanks for the autograph.

A non-stop fast-paced thriller about prison corruption.
I Just finished reading Vincent Zandri's powerful first novel, "As Catch Can". It's a non-stop thriller with all too vivid characters who come to life in the reader's mind. The narration is fast paced and certainly held this reader's interest. The plot revolves around a prison warden who is caught in a situation where he is accused of dereliction of duty in permitting a cop killer inmate to escape from his maximum security prison. Life inside the prison is depicted in graphic detail, reflecting the problems of life behind prison walls. One of the most striking parts of the story deals with flashbacks of a fictional (although based on fact) account of the Attica prison riots of 1971 in which many of the CO's were tortured, raped, and murdered by the mutinous inmates. I found these descriptions hair raising, arousing feelings of horror at the extent of human degradation possible. The story depicts modern day vice and corruption, as well as Keeper Marconi's spiritual capacity to "play fair" in a game that's rigged against him. The book makes thrilling reading that doesn't allow the reader to put the volume down. It's the kind of novel that should become an edge-of-the-seat movie thriller. If you like crime thrillers, this is the book for you.

Robert Ludlum meets Shawshank Redemption.
Vincent Zandri has crafted an almost surreal account of the depravity surrounding the state prison system of the late twentieth century. After my initial shock at Zandri's descriptions of prison life (not only the terrifying descriptions of the Attica riots as seen from inside the walls, but also the daily life within a "normal" prison) and the initial adrenaline rush of the plot-twisting story (it's not like a roller coaster, it's more like a free-falling nightmare), I was left with the real message of this book, which is about healing. A man tries to heal after a terrible loss, a woman slowly heals from an abusive relationship, a prison system goes through the painful and violent healing process after a corrupt administration. It is also about those who cannot heal and how debilitating lingering wounds really are. Zandri does an extraordinary job of opening the very private world of male grief and making it accessible. Zandri's novel is dark, almost brooding, but its message is ultimately hopeful and one is left with a sense of ironic optimism. Zandri also has left some strings untied, leaving me eager for a sequel.

Sublime!
Without question, Zandri's finest work since "Rice for Edna."

"Touched By An Angel"
The writing skills of Mr. Alexandria can only be described as having been "Touched By An Angel". He has really outdone himself with this to-die-for book-POSTAL BLUES. The characters of Detectives Joe Johnson and Vernon Brown are still very vibrant, witty and seriously taking care of Police business as the story take you from a Post Office Massacre to the Missouri River as they track down a serial killer. Vincent's writing visually takes you into the story and the personalities of all the characters. Pretty Kevin's character deserves an A+. The humor, romance and intrigue captivates all your senses right to the climax. Mr. Alexandria has really made his mark on the "GREAT WRITERS" page of WHODUNITS! Can't wait for the next book!

Postal Blues-Joy to read
Until recently mystery wasn't on my list to read. Now that I've discovered the detectives of Postal Blues and If Walls Could Talk I'm hooked. The characters in Postal Blues were so easy to relate to. Not only were they your everyday hard working men, they possessed wit and charm. I love the laughs and tears that I experienced while reading this book. Vincent Alexandria is a great writer and I can't wait until the next one is published.

Postal Blues - WOW
I just finished reading Postal Blues. Vincent Alexandria did it again. His descriptive phrases are exceptional and his surprise ending was a surprise! I am anxious to read the third book of the trilogy.
